View Full Version : First DE Shave: All I Can Say Is WOW!!!

Got tired of my 1960 Gillette Flare Tip SS collecting dust waiting for my blades to arrive, 3 weeks and counting. I couldn't wait anymore so I went out and purchased "Exact" drugstore blades here in Canada. I did research and they appear to be identical to American made Personna's. I hauled out the Proraso green tube and my boar brush, whipped up some lather and paused. I was so excited but nervous at the same time. My technique is horrid, I blame it on years of cartridge shaving. I was slower than a turtle but I wanted to be safe than sorry, I love the sound of the razor actually cutting the hairs. I only did 3 WTG passes for my first attempt, the results very good, no nicks or cuts, only a few weepers, very close to a DFS. WTG my face feels way smoother than any cartridge razor has ever given me. Best of all barely any irritation or Razor burn even with my bad habits and the cheap blades. Goodbye expensive cartridge razor and blades!!!! I have never been so excited about shaving in all my life, can't wait for the next one. I can only imagine if my shave was this good on my first attempt how much better it will get... :w00t:
P.S.
For all those who haven't made the jump yet because of the fear of getting severly cut or hurt, those fears are greatly exagerrated. I highly reccomend the Gillette Super Speed for newbies....

Having tried a vintage English Tech myself, I'm truly amazed how well these things work at 40-50 years old. It's like a Morris Minor (substitute your own favourite 50s/60s era car here) outperforming a new Toyota.

It only gets better my friend.
I havent had a razor burn, or a weeper for that matter this year.
(with the obvious exception of some nasty hotel shave cream, and a bit of shrapnel from an exploding gearbox, but you can't blame those on wet shaving)

Glad to hear about your success. I just got into Super Speeds. I picked one up from AsylumGuido (great guy to work with, btw), and I found my groove much faster than I could with my Merkur long handle. I think that razor is too aggressive for me, there is a discernible difference in the blade gap. Super Speeds are great razors!

Exact.... is that a London Drugs brand? I can't recall who sells Exact at the moment.

I think most of us started out slow and easy. But it get's better. I'm into it about 2 weeks and can't believe the difference. Not sure on the blades you have, but it seems that blade preference is a largely personal thing. Let us know how they fare in the long run.

I had a hard job finding DE blades in my area. Walmart and the other stores only had the Gillette Stainless and the reviews on here say they are terrible so I went to Superstore (Loblaws for the rest of Canada) and they had Exact brand blades. They are chrome/platinum coated, did some research and they look identical to American made Personna's.

I will, so far so good, they aren't super sharp but they do appear to be very forgiving, perfect for a newbie like myself.
