Just what the title says fellas. I was looking at the scores for the week thread and saw a very impressive first score by Badfish and it got me thinking about my first. So guy tickle your old memory banks and tell us about that first razor score, the razor that started it all.
In my case I wasn't even looking for a razor. I was out garage saling with my friend Ron and I come across a table with a bunch on it, about six or so which seemed like tons at the time, all Gillette's, some in groups of 2 and some single. Anyway Ron had recently done some reading on MSN and came across an article on wetshaving some folks may remember. Ron had just bought himself a DE, little cheap travel sucker on Amazon I think. I see them on the table and mention to him that he could have just waited and got one of those. He takes a look and mentions that there was one there that he thinks he read was one of Gillette's more favored razors and such. It's a nice little nickle plated razor tied to another with a blue plastic handle selling together for $4. I think for a few minutes and decide to pick them up. Low and behold my very first score.
(mind the crappy photos I had no idea how to shoot a razor at the time)

My first razor was a Feather Portable. It's what I learned to properly shave with. However, I consider my first score a minty D4 Fatboy.

I purchased a super speed on here and before it came in found an excellent condition H1 slim in an antique store by my wife's work. By the time the newbie appropriate SS arrived, I had been using the slim for a week. I never did get into using that SS and it was one of the first razors I sold off in my first attempt to de-clutter and de-RAD.

The greatness of Papasmurf hooked me up with a minty Slim in the case. Pretty soon after I started scoring SS's from local antique malls until I found my Fatboy ($8).

First one was a '49 SS off the bay. About an hour after it arrived in the mail, I found a '50 at a second-hand shop just down the street from my house.

My first "score" (which I'm going to say is the first time I got something great for way less than it should have been) was this past summer when I purchased a lot of five razors off eBay. In that lot were two Slims, a Flair Tip, a Blue Tip and a Tech (all of which were covered in grime and soap scum).
One of the Slims cleaned up well and would be considered in good condition in the BST forum - it was a Christmas gift to a friend. The other was my score. After cleaning it turned out to be in absolutely excellent shape (perfectly black numbers, only a few scratches on the head, etc.). A great find.
The Blue Tip ended up cleaning up well as is good shape. The Tech cleaned and polished up nicely and is in good shape (and will be given as another gift soon). The Flair Tip was beat up and rusted with little hope of recovery. I'm thinking of turning it into an ornament or something.
Either way, that whole lot was purchased for $24 so I'd say it was a good score. Which reminds me, I need to hit up the Bay again and see if I can't find another lot of beauties that just need some cleaning and polishing. If nothing else, they make for a fun project.

My first was a 48-49 superspeed. Paid 12 bucks.
Soon after DE RAD set in, and I grabbed a 59 Fatboy for 7 bucks :w00t: Cleaned up lovely, just a little fading of the numbers, but otherwise excellent (very few use scratches, no brassing) Turned into my Go-To razor immediately.

A Merkur classic, T&H Ultimate Comfort, and a Vulfix brush from Classicshaving.com. I used that for about a week before buying a 61 Fatboy on the BST here and it is all a blur after that.

before i found B&B, i did a TON of scouring and learning at "best grooming tools" and picked up a merkur classic, proraso cream and asb, and then with my exceptionally poor thinking i cheaped out and didn't go with a badger brush.
after i found B&B it was a fairly large order from classic shaving and QED, then a lot of BST transactions...

The razor that started it all for me was my Merkur HD. That got me started on the DE as my razor of choice.
The RAD kicked in when I stumbled on a 1961 Fat Boy in a dusty, little antique shop. I had read about some guys here getting old razors and cleaning them up. On a whim I bought it and cleaned it up. It was in good, but not mint, condition but boy oh boy did it shave well.

Fun thread. I landed a cased Fatboy, a flare tip SS, and a black-handled SS at a PA flea market. Total price for the package: $10. Total cost of feeding RAD since then: substantially higher
My first razor after finding B&B was a Merkur 38c w/Merkur blades. That led to a short-lived razor AD, which ultimately led to more aggressive, open-comb DEs, a Slant & Feather blades. And now I'm happy.
...which reminds me, anybody wanna buy a like-new 38c? :tongue_sm

I had bought a 5.00 brush and a puck of soap on a whim, at a shop that my wife and I go to once a year in Salado Tx to get our yearly supply of Goats Milk Soaps. I loved the difference the lather made. After looking around on the internet, I found a whole new hobby. At the time, I did not know it was the "New thing" to do, I just thought it would be fun and I've always liked antiques and I had used DE's in the early 70's. This was my first real purchase and it’s still my go to DE. It gives a great shave!

Very nice. And a complete set, also.
 In all fairness I should have mentioned that in the same day I also bought a british tech..... exactly at the same time, since the sellers were side-by-side. Lucky me because the #66 wasn't in display...

I rediscovered wetshaving and decided to look for some razors around a year and a half ago. I went to a small antique store where the owner sold me a box of 20 razors for 20.00 dollars. It had a couple adjustables and several superspeeds. After picking out what I wanted I sold the rest on E-Bay. That score allowed me to not have to spend any money for several months. I then found another box that contained a fatboy, aristocrat, several other razors and one semi rare razor that sold for more than I paid for the entire box. Selling those razors kept me in the black until I found B+B and discovered straights.

Oh right my first score was a english made knack I picked up at the local wall mart when I was 17. Was about 8 yrs ago
There was a guy there restocking them, he saw me pick it up and said "That will shave the crap out of you". I was sold, he then told me that I had to be careful and told me a story about how he once was in a rush in the morning and cut himself horribly bad under the neck. He still had the scar he and he showed me it. None of this bothered me at, all I was just thinking this think does shave the crap out of you.

Ahh... My first wetshave...
I bought a Merkur Vision 2000 set. Brush, Vision Razor, with matching bowl and stand. Along with that I also got TOBS Lavender SC. Recently sold the set and no longer have the TOBS, but I did replace the Vision with another :). Sentimental, I know.
After discovering B&B? My first razor purchase (I think) was a Fatboy E2.

My first blade, and it just came today! Its a Boker I got on ebay ready to shave. It has a small spot of tarnish near the tip clear of the edge. Otherwise it is in great condition. The guy I bought it from was great, and he offered me plenty of advice.

So many razors, but my first was a Merkur HD from ebay. Had been used just 3 or 4 times by someone that tried wet shaving and gave up quickly (bless them that purchase new and quit).
One of the few DEs I still have. Its in my Dopp kit for travel.

The first razor I bought was a Merkur 38C.
Funny, my original plan was 38C, 42C, 34C, either HD slant or Barber pole slant and that was going to be it.
I haven't bought a slant yet, but I seem to have a big lotta Gillettes that kept turning up in my mailbox.

Nice! do you still use all the items?
Everything but the Dovo. I sold it a while back to finance another purchase. I decided I like a little heavier grinds (for now).
It's funny, the BBB was my only brush until a short while ago. That thing's a tank! And I just love the strop, the T&H, and the CF Lavender (my all-time favorite lav scent). The CF Pre is pretty good, but crazily overpriced IMO.
EDIT: Oh, and I forgot the Pinaud's Clubman splash! That was part of that first score as well. And still one of my all-time faves.

Turns out I LOVE the Clubman!!! It smells great on me. The Master Bay Rum is MUCH more clove-y than I thought. The Vi-Joy Old Spice smells awesome... from what I've read on this board, supposed to be very close to the "Shulton" blend of Old Spice.

Starberry and I shared this one: The four razors on the right we won a few weeks ago on Ebay and finally got them in the mail. I hadn't had the time to take pics of them sooner. The seller threw in an extra Schick Krona, almost identical to mine. The brush was purchased locally as was the tiny razor in the case. It was a $2.99CDN dollar store special. More of a novelty than a razor. The box promised an "all metal" razor. Sadly, this didn't mean anything. The handle is indeed metal, but the head of the razor is cheap plastic.:001_rolle

I picked up a ton of stuff at the antique peddler faire in Clovis, Ca this past weekend. Two walking canes ~ I collect them, an old barber bottle, 7 old brushes that I'm going to fix up, a Clauss USMC 6/8 NOS razor, 3 watchmaker oil cans, and two 10-slot display cases just right for straight razors.
Oh, and this dealie-bob. It is a carousel that was used like at a post office or something to hold rubber stamps. I'm figurin' that I could line the inside of all the spring clamps with leather or felt or some such thing to keep the handles from getting scratched up and whatnot.

I have available, a complete, bounded collection of the Gillette Blade. The Gillette Blade was a company publication, or news letter which took the form of a magazine. The books are clean and free of rips. They are bounded with stitched string (not glue), the old way of binding. The 66 issues were bounded by the previous and original owner. They came from the estate of Ada Hunt who was a long time Gillette employee since 1904. The set also includes the 25th Silver Jubilee Edition which is about twice as big as the other issues... one of the photos below shows a close up of the cover.
There is so much covered in all these editions, such as all the board meetings, salesmen conventions and the first issues are still covering WW1 the photo I made of the eagle is honoring employees that were killed in WW1. There's so much in the 66 issues on the early history of Gillette; a person could spend a lot of time reading.
Jan. 1918 was the 1st magazine. The issues are complete that are in this set from Jan. 1918 to Mar. 1928. 1918-1919-1920 were published monthly after that it was quartely Mar.,June, Sept. And Dec., the early issues have more of the history about the start of Gillette, such as the first packaging of the first sets.
An issue of the Gillette Blade runs from $35.00 to $75.00 each issue, when they are offered for sale, which is not too often. For these 66 issues, I want $22.75 each, which is $1500.00. For a serious Gillette collector, this is a fantastic source of information. This is a wonderful set of books for someone who is interested in the history of Gillette, but I also understand $1500.00 is a good bit of money so I am willing to take offers.

Those WWII sets are awesome! where did you find them?
search functions are my friend. one I found looking for other vintage gillettes on eBay and one I found through a B&B member that i had bought other things from. I have a new interest in the Canadian war issue sets (I'm Canadian and have a general interest in our participation in the wars). Once I saw that they were available it was just a matter of searching the right places. If I give away more than that, you'll buy the next one I'm after!!

A wade & butcher hollow ground(very wedgy) that only has rust on the edge, an odd point, and a couple of chips in the blade. about 7/8, with blonde broken scales, and what i assume to be pewter inlay.
Also a barbers hone.
the hone was 11, the w&b half that!
on my phone on the train, will post pics soon

Very nice haul Bill.:thumbup1:
You could use the loop side of adhesive velcro. It's soft, readily available, and already has the glue on the back.

Sold for $1500.... the buyer was me
Now before you organize torch and pitchfork riots, please let me explain. I was given the exclusive opportunity to purchase this set (because I asked first) for said price of $1500. I had no idea what a reasonable price for this set was and I had no one to consult. I posted the offer, as it was presented to me, on the BST to get an unbiased gauge for the value. Thank you to all of those who made offers and please accept my apologies for this whole fiasco.
Now my plan for these is to in fact digitally scan every single page at 600dpi (really high resolution) so that the content will be preserved for all time. When this project is complete (or in the process), I would like to share the content with all who are interested (and there seems to by quite a lot of you). Now I am debating how to go about this. I am in the hole $1500 and I want to make the content available, but I don't want to be in the hole $1500 in doing so.... I have thought about selling issue reprints for a much lower price ($10-$25), or there is the option of accepting donations for this project. Please voice your opinions.

My opinion is that this wasn't the way to go about finding out if you got a good deal or not. This should have been posted in The Score (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=34).
If something is offered up for sale in BST, I think it should have been sold to those that made the offer irrespective of anything else.

I have a couple of suggestions: 1) start a new thread to discuss how to deal with scans. 2) In regard to the scans (and scanning is time consuming and a lot of work, i know) offer subscriptions, as one would subscribe to any other limited edition.

It would be a good effort to scan these into a computer. However the end result would be to be able to sell each edition as a PDF document over and over again. It would also allow many many people to have the benefit of this knowledge and the history as opposed to one person just putting them on a bookshelf. We would all benefit.
In the end you would make far more than the $1500. over a period of time and still have the originals. It is worth thinking about.

In the end you would make far more than the $1500.
And rightfully so. As I said, preparing these for digital distribution would be a lot of work.
This makes me think of a project I had some contact with in the 80s, a video magazine called, I think, The Ford Show Quarterly. A fellow named Lorin Sorensen, a writer, had been doing some writing for the Ford Motor Co. He somehow got the right to edit and redistribute Ford's archival films, really well-made and fascinating both to Ford buffs and to those interested in advertising and other aspects of material culture. I believe he sold these for a profit but have no idea what his deal with Ford was.
Very similar to these Gillette publications.

I have thought about this, but there are copyright laws and I don't want to tease the law too much by making a killing. I am only interested in digitally archiving them, and recouping what it will cost me to do so.

Duration of Copyright
Provisions of the Law Dealing with the Length of Copyright Protection Scope
This circular provides a general summary of the statutory provisions dealing with duration of copyright under the Copyright Act of 1976, as amended June 26, 1992, and October 27, 1998.
Works Already Under Statutory Protection Before 1978
For works that had already secured statutory copyright protection before January 1, 1978, the 1976 law retains the old system for computing the duration of protection, but with some changes.
Duration Under the Previous Law
Under the law in effect before 1978, copyright was secured either on the date a work was published or on the date of registration if the work was registered in unpublished form. In either case, the copyright lasted for a first term of 28 years from the date it was secured. The copyright was eligible for renewal during the last (28th) year of the first term. If renewed, the copyright was extended for a second term of 28 years.¹ If not renewed, the copyright expired at the end of the first 28-year term. The term of copyright for works published with a year date in the notice that is earlier than the actual date of publication is computed from the year date in the copyright notice.
Effect of the Present Law on Length of Subsisting Copyrights
The old system of computing the duration of protection was carried over into the 1976 statute with one major change: the length of the second term is increased to 67 years.² Thus, the maximum total term of copyright protection for works already protected by federal statute is increased from 56 years (a first term of 28 years plus a renewal term of 28 years) to 95 years (a first term of 28 years plus a renewal term of 67 years). The specific situation for works copyrighted before 1978 depends on whether the copyright had already been renewed or was still in its first term on December 31, 1977.
According to my other research, most copyrighted material around that time was never renewed. Of course if the dates are right the copyright would have expired before the laws changed anyway. Otherwise, it's public domain in 2015.
I'm not going to rip on you for posting this in the BST because you've probably gotten the message by now. Hopefully this information encourages you to simply recoup your costs by selling the magazines to Ray at cost and one of you can make them publicly available.

Yes, it was a mistake but what is done is done. I got the idea from collectors who put their pieces on the Bay with an unattainable reserve to gauge value. I am sorry to those who are hurt (think you still have $1500 in your pockets) and sorry to the Mods for misusing the BST in this way.

If I had a set of books and wanted a price evaluation I would just go to a reputable antiquarian book dealer in your town with the same information you posted here and ask them their opinion. They could do a price evaluation, point out how truly rare the books are and even tell you what price other sets sold at previously if ever at auction, what public institutions might be willing to pay for a complete set etc etc.. Asking shaving fanatics what they would be willing to pay for the item may skew the price, even if you said you would sell it for $2,500 you would have some takers.

Yeah like anyone in the antique world considers shaving stuff "valuable."
You guys have seen my collection- you know that I am a pretty serious Gillette guy. Let me tell you- EVERY time I talk to antique store owners or dealers, they look at me in puzzlement about why ANYONE would collect razor stuff.
What shaved_***** did may have been misleading, but I think he's right that it got a value determined really quick.
Try to think of this as an outsider: People willing to spend $1500 on a set of old razor newsletters would be like some other hobbiest spending $1500 on a set of old baseball glove catelogs.
They don't have intrinsic value like stonewear, jewlery, precious metals, fine wood work, or furniture. Since there's hardly ANY demand out there- it would be hard for an Antique appraiser to really estimate the true value unless they were an "insider" into the razor collecting world.
I say - play ball. No harm, no foul.

And not to pile on, but making a specific offer to sell that contains all material terms is considered a binding contract the moment someone unconditionally accepts that offer. I know no one would try to enforce such a thing around here, but I'm just throwing that out as a warning to be cautious when using such a technique. Plus, I'm a contract nerd.

Real
They are out of print bound periodicals, a complete rare set of books. As such they have a HIGE INTRINSIC VALUE not only to Gillette collectors but possibly to institutions such as university libraries who buy such sets at high prices . For example the antiquarian book dealer I worked for once told me how a clerk had quickly priced a beat up old pamphlet for a $1 and placed out for sale and it sold . Turns out it was a rare American Revolutionary War pamphlet of great value that the owner had put aside on a counter to research the price of. My point is , its a set of books of value and as such research needs to be done on them as books to come up with a reasonable price.

According to WoldCat which shows printed material located in libraries and museums, this is indeed a rare find. Harvard's Business library has a copy or two. $1500.00 is an outright steal for the historical rarity value of these volumes. I doubt that there is a more complete set in the world. Noted examples would be included in the database of worldcat.

Me, too. Fortunately, there are larger gentlemen than us. I have to admit, I was a bit irritated at first. The good he intends does not justify anything, but I agree this was most accurate gauge he could of used. Trust me, I have tried to sell things for what the are "worth". Unfortunately, that's not what they are worth if no one will pay that. How often do you get Blue Book value out of a car? Not to condone, I just see both sides here.

Seems pretty lame to be pretending to sell something just to get a price on something you're planning to buy for yourself, regardless of all promises to the altruistic contrary (yes, yes, I know, you HAD to lie so you could get them for everyone else's benefit :001_rolle).

Folks, I am hearing little lockdown voices in my head. How do I make them stop?
I would rather not lock as some useful info might pop in here about these books. Can we say that enough folks have had their say about the nature of this listing and call that aspect of the thread done?
I would love to get occasional updates on the story of these books, what is happening to them, sneak peaks of the images, etc. So for now lets keep this open. But again; Please lets stop discussing the nature of the listing itself.

I must say this is fun. I found this yesterday. I don't know much about Tuckaways besides the common hairline crack in the handle. This one has a small crack and no serial number any where. It does say PAT JAN 13, 1920 on the handle. I never realized how 'cool' these looks until I saw it in person. I haven't cleaned it yet, I am a little nervous. So my questions are how old is this and how do you get it ready to shave? Did I mention $20. Oh yeah, I said $20 :w00t:

So my RAD is in full-on-mode for after the last couple of weeks. A month ago my girl friend & I visited Fort Langley located East of Vancouver. A little background to where I am going with this, Fort Langley is historically significant to Canada because it is the place where British Columbia was declared a province of Canada.
As we were leaving, I quickly popped into an antique store just to inquire if they had any DE razors. The gent said wait a moment & went upstairs, rummaged about, and returned with a box full of razors of all types. Unfortunatley I had no time to look at all of them as I had family waiting so I left vowing to one day return. There was so many razors I was overwhelmed. I really didnt know what all I was looking at really as far as razors go. So leaving gave me chance to re-gather & return home to do research at the most valuable resource for razor ID's on this planet, the B&B. So Thanks again B&B
Last weekend my girlfriend & I returned to go through the razors once again, only to find out I was scooped by a fellow B&Ber just minutes before. Just kidding.
I picked out the ones I was going to use & my girlfriend picked out the ones she was going to use to put in a shadow box to display in our bathroom. I was delighted with her enthusiasm picking through the razors & of course needless to say I was giddy because she was basically enabling the purchases fueling my RAD .
I was impressed with the variety of different vintage razors and the great shape these puppies were in considering some of them were nearly 100 years old. So we purchased a total of 10 razors at $7.00 a piece. I was beside myself. They have cleaned up nicely and didnt really need to do much polishing at all.
So from what I have been able to determine we purchased a couple of Gillette News (Stunning looking razors - 1 looks like a Bostonian or a Standard), a Good Will, a Ball-End Tech, a 1967 S/S with case ( I got lucky cause I have been meaning to purchase my birthyear razor of 1968 but close enough for me cause it is dated to the 4th quarter of 1967 ) , a Shick Injector with Bakelight handle, and various Gems (2 with cases, blade boxes, blades, and instructions) Not sure if the cases match but nice to have anyways.
I used the Gillette New today and looks like will become my favorite. Definately lives up to its reputation as a great shaver. Cant wait to getting around & shaving with all of them.
As I was mentioning the historical significance of Fort Langley, I am not only pleased to have the oppurtunity to be able to come across and purchase these little pieces from the past but as well be able to attach to these razors sentiment, the significance of purchasing them virtually within a mile of where the province I live in, virtually came to fruition historically as a part of Canada. That just makes them that much more special to me. Cool.
I wanted to share some pics cause I know you guys appreciate pictures but I apologize in advance for the quality, I am not a photographer by any stretch. Enjoy and thanks again B&B for all the help :001_smile

The week isn't quite over yet, and I think there are still more coming for me- but already I've had a pretty awesome week. Courtesy of eBay and some local antique shops that have proved to be an untapped font of treasures.
At any rate, the haul is as follows:
- Gillette Super Speed TTO
- Gillette Adjustable Super Speed TTO
- 2x Gillette micro travel razors
- Gillette fixed circa 1900s in case
- Gillette 'Service Set' circa WWI in case
- Kampfe Brothers Star Razor circa 1900s with 3 blades
The last is my pride and joy for the week, a really beautiful piece and I am proud to have it.

...I wanted to share some pics cause I know you guys appreciate pictures but I apologize in advance for the quality, I am not a photographer by any stretch. Enjoy and thanks again B&B for all the help :001_smile
Great find!
I hope to run into an antique shop & find a box of razors... maybe someday.
Excellent score - and you made my heart sink with the "I was scooped by a B&B-er by 10 minutes...!"

Looks like you are off to a great start!
The only other thing I've added this week is a Tabac Shave Stick.

I already posted some some stuff earlier this week, but I got a couple more things yesterday.
Edwin Jagger Silvertip Brush from BST and a Gillette Travel Razor from an antique store.
Also, completely unrelated, but a 112 year old book Calculus for Engineers.
Steve, I really like the packaging on those colognes.

yup, work in the building that contains Harvard Business School's Baker library (which contains very few books BTW. The collection is in the "stacks" underground).
What I need now is for the semester to end so that I can find the time to do this!!! Assuming I succeed I will pdf a few pages for all at the very least. I doubt Gillette will sue me.
Ah, I see. They don't have the entire collection but they do have the Jubilee issue for in-library use and something from 1954. I wonder what the 1954 issue is.

The watch is a old Certina DS-2 with original bracetel made by NSA.
I bought it a few months ago, while my brother-in-law bought for me the soap in Germany last week.

Mine was practically the exact same, although I did move on to Proraso soap quickly.
yeah, it looks like the 1926 edition.

I just got back from the last day of a local antique show, and here's the dirt:
There were a LOT of Gem razors with handles in all shapes and sizes. There was a Gillette Open-Comb of unknown vintage that I left because it had a lot of plating loss on the top and many of the combs were bent pretty badly. There were quite a few straights but none in glorious shape (one looked as though somebody had taken an extra-coarse file to it :frown:)
Due to my limited funds, I chose these three best items:
http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww113/juffowupscorner/P1000627-1.jpg
From the number, it looks to be a 1935-1945 Schick Injector-E3 Popularity. There is some wear to it, but it cleaned up very nicely and I can't wait to try it out (a local grocery chain right down the street carries brand-name blades for it too!) $10! It came in a case but it's in bad shape
A Col. Conk Scuttle! The timing was fantastic on this as I have a puck of the soap on the way. Are these pretty rare? $25- When the lady found out that I planned to actually use it with Col. Conk soap she knocked $10 off so-$15
Last, I grabbed the Gem that had the least amount of plating loss on the head. The handle is some strange, tiny thing but it would make a good travel razor. $12

Purchased this today, cause it smells great. I guess that was my criteria standing in the isle at the drug store.
Not sure how effective it is but I will find out tomorrow after Sunday's shave.
Anyone else tried this stuff?

I'm blown away. The Yardley Soap scent is STRONG and incredible after so many years. The Lavender After Shaving Lotion is a nice, true lavender scent with a little menthol kick. What a shame these items aren't manufactured anymore.

Just one acquisition this week, an early 40's black Tech. I'm assuming it's earlier in the 40's due to the triangular slots in the base plate.
The pictures don't do it justice. It has some paint wear on it, but it totally just adds character to it:

I can hardly wait to try it out! I love my later model Gold Tech, but I'll be thrilled if this earlier version is a bit more aggressive. (HD is my go-to as of now.)

Scored a few today. None of the four are anything special but all are clean and ready for duty.
1955 Red Tip
1962 Slim
194x gold, ball-end Tech
194x gold, thick-handled Tech
The whole score for $12....I love flea markets!
