View Full Version : I did the T&H shave today
This was very surprising... I had very high expectations from Truefitt and Hill.
I have to admit, not everything was bad, but close.
What I used:
T&H pre shave oil
T&H 1805 shaving cream
T&H aftershave balm (which fragrance, no idea, the sample didn't specify)
Started with the pre-shave oil, Bergamot fragrance, generous sample... This bit was not so bad.
Second, lather... Excellent to perfect lather. Very very thick and the fragrance is great. First two pass are great, very good lather, the razor slides very easily. 3rd pass, starts to burn. Once done, razor burn. I used a new blade for this (Wilkinson sword which is ok for me usually).
A/S - My face, my face, my face isonfire.
Post shave (60 mins later). I feel like I had a date with french fries... This comes from the aftershave, not the oil because my face wasn't greasy prior to the aftershave. If I would be rolling my face on a piece of paper right now, I am certain it becomes see-throught!
Overall, I use less and less oils and have a tendency to go towards Kyle's technique, so pre-shave will become very easy. I think the lather was superior to TOBS but the burning sensation killed it. Finally, the aftershave, well, I will stick to Proraso. My face absorbs Proraso within 5 mins, dry, non-greasy.
In all of this, I am happy that I had a sample from Truefitt & Hill instead of a whole tube. Finally, on a positive note, I think their colognes are

I too noticed a burn or tingle on the 3rd pass, but no razor burn at all though.
Do you have the same results with other creams or just this one??

Likewise for me as well. Also, I need an ASB after T&H creams, very drying for my face moreso than any other Ive tried. I guess its a trade off for the scent of 1805? Arent they cologne based? Maybe thats the reason.
Hmmm, I think Ill give my sample of Grafton a go tomorrow.

I have never had any luck with my T & H samples. Irritation city! For me, I think it is how heavily scented their creams are.
Maybe I should try the unscented???

Can you expand on that a bit?
You mean eazor burn, or a reaction to the product?
What creams have you used that didn't cause any bit of bother?

I've heard some accounts about inconsistencies with T&H samples. You may also need to be cautious with citrus blends (bergamot, etc) as some folks have sensitive reactions with them on their skin. From my experience, I get great shaves from U.C. and Trafalgar creams. I haven't tried their PSO and probably won't as I am happy with my Origins easy slider or nothing at all.

So no reaction or burn whatsoever with Trafalgar? That's what did it to me this morning, at the start of my 3rd lather.

Yep sounds like you're having an allergic reaction to something in the cream or etc. I can use T&H 1805 cream no problem but their 1805 After shave balm I'am very allergic to something in it. Makes my face have a burning sensation and looks like i have a very bad sun burn.
I found that hydrocortisone cream is my savior for the allergic reaction.
By the way I traded the AS Balm.

I use T&H Ultimate Comfort all the time and it rocks. No irritation ever. I haven't tried any of their scented creams, but I kind of like the non-scent of the UC cream (if that makes sense). It still has a pleasent / clean aroma, but not soapy at all.

Using both T&H 1805 Cream and AS is one of my favorite shaves.
I use the T&H cream and have no problems. In fact, when trying a new razor, I use the T&H or Mussgo. As for the aftershave, I normally use Mussgo, Saint Charles Shave or Boosters.

i would cut out the pre-shave oil and just use some hot water for a couple of minutes. you might want to try the ultimate comfort shave cream as it has really no fragrance and that might be what you are allergic too.
also i think samples are crap because whenever i use them i get shitty results. they are way too inconsistent to waste my money on.

I too would cut the pre shave oil. But the AS is a bummer to hear for you. But most of the shave sounded glorious so just change the last part.

Trafalgar is nice to me. I think where I have run into irritation issues it's been because I wasn't using a fresh blade and/or I was using too much pressure or going ATG too early. That said, I'm finding I prefer creams or soaps that don't have too much of a scent component. U.C. suits me better in this regard then the Trafalgar. I find I can get a good 4 passes of lather off of just a bit of cream from a finger tip dab when I use my bowl and the B&B limited brush. Using less product probably helps as well.
The pre-shave oil left me a greasy face for the whole day. The shaving cream itself was all right but I ended up with some itchyness at one stage. A bit like Baxter of California...
