View Full Version : Razor Blade tolerances

I was reading a few of the threads on different blades, Feathers, Persona's, etc. and started thinking (always a dangerous process). I know there are adjustable razors like the Merkur Progress, Vision and others but I started to wonder if all razor blades are the same size. Specifically if I was to measure along the X and Y axis of the blade, would I find it the same as another brand.

I know since razor blades are manufactured there are manufacturing tolerances and with that if say blade "A" is 1.000" wide from cutting edge to cutting edge, and blade "B" is 1.005" wide, doesn't this mean that your settings in your razor have now just changed? Plus for non-adjustable razors like my Merkur HD doesn't it mean I'll be cutting a little deeper?

Or am I making a mountain out of mole hill?

I thought that blades about this when I owned a Merkur Progress. The Progress is infamous for uneven blade exposure - one side was too exposed and the other was underexposed - and I thought that perhaps, differently sized blades were to blame. However, my measurements proved all the blades to be equal in size.

You're making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Whoops. Apparently I can't link that site. I remember seeing a discussion of this on razor and brush.

There is a thread around here somewhere where someone got a set of calipers and measured the thickness and width of a variety of popular blade types.

Do a search and you should find it.
