this video (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7466711741780429878&q=straight+razor) is pretty informative and scary, check it out before you burn some gas.

Are you registered on www.straightrazorplace.com forums? If I recall correctly there are 1 or 2 members who live in NYC, maybe you could get in touch with them?

You should take the lasts person's advice. There's one or two people on there that are from NY.

I would also recomend buying Lynn Abrams "The World of Straight Razors" dvd. Info on buying it is in the buy-sell forum of Straightrazorplace. Lots of great info in there and its always useful to see the action instead of reading about it.

No matter what you read or who you watch, this is one of those things that you're just going to have to master by yourself. You'll get a lot of helpful tips, but ultimately the results will be up to you.

The best bet is to start slowly, using the straight on your cheeks, which is by far the easiest part to shave. As you grow accustomed to the feel of the blade against your skin, you can branch out to the neck (not really that hard at all), the lip (a bit tricky), and the jaw line and chin. The last two areas require a constantly changing blade angle (to the floor, or any fixed point, but not to the skin).

It's just like getting to Carnegie Hall- practice!
