View Full Version : How many shaves do you get from Derbys?

I started out using Murker blades and I just switched to Derbys.

When using the Murker blades they were good for 4 to 5 shaves per blade.
The shaves weren't that great so I switched to Derbys as they seemed to be very popular on the board and the Murker's seem in consinces to be poor quality blades.

So the Derbys are a great blade and give much closer shaves than the Murkers but I am only getting two shaves per Derby blade.....is this normal??

Could be. Everyone gets different results.

I only get two or three shaves per Derby but it's still my favorite brand.

3 or 4 shaves here with a Derby - occasionally 2, occasionally 5 - routinely 3-4 though.

3-4 here too. Sometimes 2, never 5.

I draw the line at 3. Even if the third shave was great, I still use a new one after that. They are so cheap that there really isn't a reason to even try to push it further, IMHO.

3-4 here as well. I love the first 2 Derby shaves though, all around the best IMHO.

This has been my experience as well.

i use them till they start to pull so it varies 4 to 5 shaves give or take but then again i only do 2 passes per shave anyways and i get an excelent shave

I have been giving Derbys a go as well. I have a Red Tip SS. Do you use one side one day and the other side the next or do you switch the blade around according to the number on the edge. For eaxmple (1) on Monday (2) on Tuesday (3) Wednesday (4) Thursday?

I have made it a habit to get 2 shaves and them throw the blade out. I have yet to find a way to get the metal recycled. I suppose I will save all the used blades in a box until I have a good few kilograms and find a place that'll take them for recycling.

2 shaves?

Blimey.

I can't imagine a blade being dull after two shaves unless I was planing a door in between shaves.

Nope - life's too short to be working out how much area each face of the blade has covered... lather up, cut a strip, rotate the razor half-a-turn, cut a strip, rinse, repeat. Same again for 2,3,4 more days. Eject blade into blade bin. Start over.

I don't believe those numbers have any bearing as to flipping the blade over or how long the blade will last. I get 4-5 shave out of a Derby. If those #'s did represent the edges, i don't think I would take the time to flip the blade.

I've gone as many as 5, but with them being so cheap, I routinely change after 3. Derby is my overall favorite blade.

3-4 usually , they will go to 5 but they dont tend to feel as smooth. So i dont push em.

7-10, but I wear a goatee so less real estate to shave per pass. I love Derby's. I have an unopened 100 pack, and I think I'm going to order a second 100 pack (just in case suddenly they stop making them). Should do me 4-5 years I would think. :)

Wow, I was amazed reading this thread, I go a full 7 shaves (1 per day) so 1 week before changing and I'm fine on my last day. I've always been lucky that I didn't have a heavy beard but I'm amazed that most folks have to change in 5 or less days.

I usually get 4-5 shaves with the Derby, my primary choice of blade.

I get one - if I try to wring a second shave out of the wretched thing I usually nick myself leaning on the razor trying to get it to cut my stubble.
That does not stop the Derby being my usual blade though - the one shave I get is quite smooth.

Cordially. AvT.

I put one in about 3 weeks ago and it isn't dull yet. Of course I use a str8 almost exclusively, so the DE blades last FOREVER.

I don't understand it. I have a fast growing, thick beard. I have gotten as many as 9 shaves out of Derby. I now go 6 shaves, or 1 week before changing a blade. They are not bad shaves either, but I did notice that after 6 it takes longer to get a DFS or BBS.

I've found that, so far, I enjoy my shaves if I only use a blade for 4 shaves, regardless of the brand.

I've found if I go three pass (WXA-TG) to get BBS, the blades don't last as long. If I just stick with 1WTG 1XTG i get eaisly get 3 from each side. IOW a week.

OldSaw

I would imagine after 20 or 30 shaves a Derby would feel just as bad as the first, for me. I have given up on these blades long ago. They are fine for WTG, but I just can't get good results when shaving ATG with them.

So the Derbys are a great blade and give much closer shaves than the Murkers but I am only getting two shaves per Derby blade.....is this normal?? I get two shaves per blade. Sometimes three. But I always toss all blades after two shaves (except Astras), so . . . two shaves.

The price you pay for a better shave is decreased blade life.

And is it possible that the reason you were not getting great shaves from the Merkur blade is that you were using them too long?

As always, YMMV.

This continues to float around, but it was answered in this post:

Derby Numbers from Naci (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showpost.php?p=469354&postcount=28)

Also, Derby's are my favorite blade, and I get 3-5 days of two-pass shaving with them before I change blades.

4 easy, sometimes 5. Definitely my blade of choice.

otherstar
03-24-2009, 07:52 AM
I get 5.

I could probably get 7 shaves out of a blade since I only do three passes. The 6th and 7th shaves are not that comfortable or close as the first five, unless I do extra passes and thereby increase the likelyhood of irritation.

Derby's are the only blade I use right now.

I have 3 nice shaves and then replace the blade. With the price of blades relatively low, it doesn't make sense to me to have to replace a blade in the middle of a shave because it is pulling.

I would get 3 - 5 depending on the blade, but now I use feathers exclusively and get the most shaves ever 18 to be exact in my slants 10 - 12 in my gillettes!

The number of shaves that you get from a blade is affected by how many passes you make per shave. Everybody does not do the same number of passes.

I get one to many shaves from any blade, with some blades not even making it through the first shave. That includes Derby.

The numbers on the Derby blades are there for the purpose of calibrating the machinery they use to sharpen the blades. It's part of the quality control process for them.

I get one week...so that's 5 or 6 shaves. My best shaves are generally the 3rd-5th shaves.

dmnall
03-24-2009, 08:48 PM
The numbers that I get out of the Derbys are with 3 passes plus touch up, Feathers are 2 passes with touch ups!

DirtyDave
03-24-2009, 09:22 PM
Usually five days, three passes per day + blade buffing. I can go more, but the blades are cheap, so why not change them? I have gone seven days, but usually day six and seven are not as close.

New2DEShaving_Montreal

If you see how thick each of my hair is, you'll see why I have gone down to 2.

After the second shave, the blade isn't shaving my hair, its my hair shaving the blade.

I usually change my blade every saturday as a matter of course. So that's 7 shaves for me with no problems. Last summer when the mail was slow to Iraq I managed to stretch it out for almost two weeks.

3 good shaves + 1 mediocre. At this price, I'm eliminating the mediocre and stopping at 3.

Read this thread a couple of times the last few days and up till now I could muster the strength to let it pass..

I get 6 - 8 shaves per blade with each shave requiring 3-4 passes. I think the reason I get more shaves per blade is that after shaving, I strop the blades on my hand and then dry them.

I have no problem getting a good 7 shaves with each Derby. I wonder if shaving in the shower immediately after shampooing hair/face makes a difference
