View Full Version : Good daily multivitamin?

I'm sold on daily multivitamins, seems like I fight off little cold and flu bugs a lot more easily, which is great with two grade school kids constantly bringing things home, also seems like I have more energy to do things.
I've tried "One a Day" for men, and GNC's "Solotron". Solotron is pretty potent stuff, but it really upsets my stomach if I don't take it with food. Since my eating schedule is kinda wacko, that leads to me missing a day from time to time, or having to eat an extra snack sometimes just so I can stomach the vitamins.
I don't have those problems with 1-a-day, but they seem so mass market, I wonder how good they really are.
Anybody have some good recommendations for a quality daily multivitamin that is also easy to take without food?

If you like the "solotron"...
just take it with a glass of milk.

Your spine will thank you later...

Not a vitamin recommendation, but what I can say is that I used to take Men's one-a-day, but I stopped.

I try to eat the recommended daily servings from all the food groups, in which case you don't need a multivitamin (barring any specific medical conditions)

btw - for fighting off colds, I know several people (I'm not one of them) who swear by either of the two following methods:

1. A packet of "Emergen-C" every day
2. A tablet of "Airbrorne" every day

You don't need the mega doses. There is plenty of reliable information on the web from trusted medical sources. Just stick with the recommended guidelines - that is what the mass marketed lines are based on. I take a Centrum just because I get it cheaper. It may do nothing, but then again it may help round out my sometimes crappy diet.

I had asked my doctor a while back for a good, reliable multi without the mega doses that most "Ultimate Male" formulations seem to have. His reccomendation was Centrum, and I have been using it ever since.

I stopped taking vitamins particularly vitamin C after my friend who does research for the insurance industry told me about some data where people were getting hardening of the arteries faster because of them. Instead he said to eat more fruits and vegetables raw. Best way to get vitamins, allegedly....

I'm currently reading "Eat to Live" by Joel Fuhrman (hmmm, that name rings a bell!) and it is basically a raw food diet. Specifically because cooking foods leeches out the nutrients, he does recommend taking a supplement (however, I haven't gotten to the recommendations yet). I've made some minor changes in my diet, and I already can tell small difference. Of course, in the past, I was a "Live to Eat" guy!

I almost got some Solotron today as a matter of fact, but chose to get Mega Men again instead. MM was the first vitamin I've actually taken where I felt different (better). Centrum, etc did nothing for me.

About the food thing. I am told that most vitamin suplements do not absorb very well at all if not taken with food. So you may not be doing yourself much good anyway, unless you take it with some food. Or at least a glass of milk or something. Not sure how reliable this is, but it makes some sense to me.

Life Essence by Pure Essence Labs. The most complete vitamin/mineral supplement I've ever used. You can check them out at: http://www.pureessencelabs.com/life_essence.php

I went ahead and got the Centrum. I do notice a boost even with one-a-day. More so with Solotron, but I can't help but think I'm not doing my liver and kidneys any favors by forcing them to filter out all the mega junk in there. There is such a thing as too much.
I do try to eat a pretty healthy diet, but not on a real regular schedule. Love my veggies, dairy, fruits, fish, etc.. However, at work, I eat on the road, and there ain't such a thing as a healthy option at most small town greasy spoons. On most menus, the "healthy" option is a taco salad. If you're lucky, there isn't orange grease running out of the bottom of the taco shell bowl. So, quite often I'll skip lunch. Breakfast is on the fly. I leave home so early during construction season, I just can't stomach the thought of food. Once at work, again, healthy options are limited. Some days, I'll get so involved with work I just skip breakfast and lunch. That's why I feel the vitamins are a good idea. In an ideal world, I'd have 3 healthy meals a day. Winters are better in that regard. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've been told on more than one occasion by physicians that all multivitamins do is give you very expensive and enriched urine.

This is only the opinion of the a few doctors, so take it as a grain of salt, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to speak the other side.

I've thought of that too, and by nature, I would tend to agree with it, as I'm a bit of a sceptic when it comes to such things. However, even if its only a placebo effect, they do seem to impact me for the better, so I do intend to keep taking them.

I use "Every Man's One Daily" which is a food-based multi-vitamin. Supposedly the food-based ones absorb better into the body so they do not need 1000% of x just to make sure you get a much lesser %.

Skip the vitamin. Eat your fruits and vegetables. At the first sign of a cold (tickle in the throat, sniffle, etc.) take a zicam. That stuff is a miracle.

If you eat a really balanced diet, I would agree the vitamin is pretty useless. Since I do not, I take it as an insurance policy. I take One-a-Day Men's Health, which has some green tea and something else for a healthy prostate. I have a friend who worked in the factory that made Centrum, and after hearing the exploits of the drunkards who worked there and what they would throw in the vats on night shift, I eschew that brand. Of course, YMMV.
