I thought it could be really interesting to see what y'all use for a desktop background picture. I'm not tryin' to be bossy, but if everyone reduced their pics to 700 pixels wide, this thread could really be fun to browze through.

Here is one of the pics I use. It is the actual hearse that was used to carry the bodies of the McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton to boot hill in Tombstone, Az. October 26, 1881

I couldn't find the exact picture (I'm posting from my office computer) but its an image of the Walker house in Carmel. I'm a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Walker house is my favorite of his residential works.

My desktop has El Greco's View of Toledo covering the entire screen (see picture below on the right).

It was midnight, day3 of a 4 day river rafting trip through Wrangell St. Elias National Park in Alaska. We hadn't seen a road, power line, house, or even another soul for three days. Nearing the end of a two week tour of Denali and Wrangell, the group took a chance to build a small fire and enjoy the darkest moment of our trip so far.

This was a class I took in the summer of 2007...that's right, this was a college class! RECR 4830 - Sustainable Tourism and Alaska's National Parks. Anyone want to change their major to recreation?

Makes for a great desktop!

Just another day at the office

Are you a wild land firefighter, or did you just happen to have one that was out there? I'm curious because I'm toying with the idea of doing that (wild land) after my year where I am now.

There are some pretty cool ones so far. I think I'm going to give a restored straight razor to the person who submits the desktop image I like the best.

I can safely say it won't be post #9. You can submit up to three entries to win. Preferably, make them without your shortcuts showing. Any pic not 700 pixels wide will be eliminated, no matter how much I like it. If you are not interested in the razor, that's ok too, and just submit whatever the heck you want because they are still cool to look at.

Winner to be announced three days after no more additions have been made to the thread or on May 1st, whichever comes first.

Very nice B&W photo, Whitebar.

My desktop is 50% gray. This gray is often used for the walls of editing rooms and other places where color critical work is done. Easy on the eys, doesn't distract, but not very exciting when you email it to someone.

Haha. You, sir, are a clever one. I meant that this picture was of the lowest the sun set below the horizon while we were there. I would have to think about it to come up with the darkest (emotionally speaking) moment. Maybe I'll get back to you on that.

Are you serious about the razor? I'm gonna post a couple other pics in case I haven't won you over just yet. Did I mention, Bill, that the very thought of shaving with one of your eloquently designed, hand crafted miracles of a by-gone era makes me so excited that I physically shake? I'm just sayin' that if the degree of which we would want to win one of your razors plays into account here...

A friend of mine on another forum recently posted some pics of his dog. Although this is without doubt one of the most hideous creatures I've seen to date, there does seem to be a loveable quality about him. Every time I walk into the den and see his picture I say, "Damn! That's an ugly dog!" but he really has grown on me.

I'm using no background image. I have a plain, gray desktop ... its been that way as long as I can remember.

Using Linux is a bit like wet shaving, requires patience, technique and can be refined in to an art. I definitely recommend Ubuntu to new comers to Linux. If you want to give it a shot without upsetting your current Windows setup, I heavily recommend trying out the Wubi option for install.

Please visit ubuntuforums.org once you install Ubuntu and need help.

I've been using Linux since Debian was at 2.0 (~1998) and the motto was "It's Linux, it's supposed to be hard" so I don't think I'm that new to it.

I already dual-boot Intrepid on my desktop and run Jaunty exclusively on my laptop, I just haven't customized it too much since my main purpose is to test software compatibility with Wine.

Thats a fantastic linux program called conky. Does amazing stuff.

Ohhh... somebody mentioned that in the Linux Mint thread too! I completely forgot about it! It's like Samurize for Linux.

Very interesting, I'll have to hop on over to Ubuntu and install it.

That was me. I got Conky up and running and except for having to learn some of the config language, it's neat and it works great.

I'll start my three entries with my Linux desktop background: Uh, it's sort of an in-joke with Gentoo Users, so I figure this isn't much of a contender; but I am being honest. :001_smile

Next, a picture unearthed not long ago from Dad's 35mm slide archives. He put a notch in his cap crimping pliers on this day in 1969, not far from Hue. They were assigned to blow up a bridge and caught some of it on film. Now happily retired, Dad makes soap. This pic is my Mac laptop's background.

There are some pretty cool ones so far. I think I'm going to give a restored straight razor to the person who submits the desktop image I like the best.

I can safely say it won't be post #9.

Bill - that is an incredibly generous offer!

Question though - why the hate on #9? It's clean and classic as well as the answer to the age old question "How much blacker could it be?"

Answer: None more - none more black!

Good show Bill, here is my second entry, this serves as a daily reminder of the sacrifices paid by the 'Greatest Generation'. He is a POW during WWII and still manages to find time to shave (who know's it may have been his only touch of sanity):

Took this in 2006. Didn't see it again til mid-2008 because I tend to zoom through my photos too quickly, and I determined this one to be too dark. Two years later, bored, looking at photos, I saw it again and realized that there was actually detail and nice color.

Sorry to sound depressing but I use my Desktop images to reflect on either current events or Historical events.

Currently I have a photo of the Browning Belt Feed water cooled machine gun from World War One. It is hard to believe from looking at the picture that this is the firearm that altered the very nature of warfare as we know it.

Meaning it looks so primitive that I can't believe that it evolved into the most feared weapon of WW II, Korea, Vietnam and of course Iraq I & II.

Yes this is on the depressing side. But you asked so here is my answer!

P.S. I am a former member of the Army and have a friend at work who has a son in the U.S. Marines. It is sooo scary to put ones trust into the hands of God and except whatever happens.

I shuffle through backgrounds fairly often. Here's my current one.

Its a broken down ferris wheel in Prypiat, Ukraine. Prypiat was home to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant workers before the disaster in 1986. Its still uninhabitable with extremely high levels of radiation permeating the city.

Its a fascinatingly creepy picture.

Here's my 3rd entry. About 7 years ago I spent 6 weeks in England for work. I was staying at a place called The Bull Inn, an 11th century Pub/Tavern in a place call Sonning In Thames. I was working in Reading, about a 20 minute walk along the Thames river. I was there in the winter, but got incredibly luck to have decent weather, so I walked to work almost every day. This was a Lock House that I passed on the way. The cool thing about these locks, was that sometimes they weren't manned, and you had to operate them yourself, which I had the chance to do one day when some friends and I rented a boat to cruise on the river. It was a great 6 weeks!

Nice example of engineering gone wrong! My last desktop was an example of engineering gone right, well if one gets built. A GE ESBWR layout. Passive safety features, prodigious amounts of power and zero greenhouse gas.

Chernobyl was a crime against humanity. It was an RBMK reactor, and those are designed to allow for loading/unloading fuel in such a manner as to produce weapons grade material (though they are no longer used for that purpose). The geometry of the design makes it impossible/unfeasable to give it complete containment, which is a MUST! Even worse the reactor that went at Chernobyl had no containment, the roof of the building was made out of flammable material (WHY??), and the accident happened because the day shift removed safety features and didn't tell the night shift. Someone should have gone to jail, a lot of people.

Not trying to jack the thread, I'm just passionate about power

Now tell me this isn't a marvel of engineering

i can't believe i had not run across this thread yet. i have about 4 gigs of background pictures on my computer at home (currently at school so not a good selection on my profile here). most all of my backgrounds are anime for still frame backgrounds, probably not the most popular style but that's what i will put here as it is the type i use 80% of the time. for reference on my vista machine i use an App that plays HD movie segments as the background and would not be possible to post that here.

i did not make this background as you can see from the image, i am sure at some point i will post up some of the ones i use at home (I love background images and always looking for new ones to add to my collection).

when i downloaded the first picture i got, i thought it may have been a very artistic speculation drawing of a naruto character. but the tattoo on the arm does not really match neither does the setting, i have seen my fair share of anime but that character is not one i can place in any of the series i own or have seen.

the third picture was posted a while back on another forum i frequent in a desktop background thread and i just had to grab it because it looked interesting. at the bottom right of the pic it says "svitart.com vitality : s : alexius" in all caps. aside from that i have no additional information on it.

Paul, was the wind blowing from left to right? The tower looks to be leaning to the right and not from holding the camera at an angle.
Hi John,
I agree, the tower appears to be leaning yet the horizon seems straight, so I offer you four possibilities:
1. Yes it was blowing hard (I do believe there is a certain amount of sway in the tower in high winds) and the night was stormy
2. Optical illusion
3. The French are jealous of the Italians and deliberately built it with a lean
4. The photo was taken from a height and I had the camera resting on a somewhat sloping wall for support. We were there for our Silver Wedding so I didn't want to lug a heavy tripod about. Also you will note from my avatar that I'm a red wine fan. One of the things about the French is that they keep most of the good stuff for themselves, so I made the most of it while were there, which may have led to a less steady hand than usual :a54:

Hint: I think 4. is the correct answer
regards

This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helicopter rescue mission. The pilot is a Pennsylvania National Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life. Now how many people on this planet do you reckon could set the ass end of a chopper down on the roof top of a shack on a steep mountain cliff and hold it there .. while soldiers load wounded men in the rear? If this does not impress you ... nothing probably ever will. Can you imagine the nerve, talent and ability evidenced here

I wanted to be a pilot at one point when I was younger, and even considered the air force (very briefly), but stopped to go into architecture. Now, I look back and think, there isn't a chance in hell I could have done that. I get nervous on tall ladders, how did I ever think I would do something like that. Very impressive photo.

Funny story...the path directly behind me was covered in ice and towards the end of the cable rail you see on the right, it tapers out and is impossible to grab without falling off the rock face. An older gentleman was standing where I am and would not cross because of the debacle, so I kindly asked him to move out of the path. Afterward, the buddy I was with saw me shove my hands through the wedge between the rock and packed snow/ice. I shimmied across, he called me insane, then followed suit. Good times, just thought I'd share.
