When I started buying straights, I bought everything brand new. Now I only buy old ones- seems to be much more fun. The only new one I have left is a 5/8 TI Olivewood. I've lost track of the older ones, but I enjoy Shumates, W&B's, Genevas, Koellers, and Henckels (great razors, lousy knives). There are just so many to consider.

After reading all the posts about straights and asking a few questions, I have decided to seriously give it a go. So, jumping in with both feet, I've just purchased the following four razors on e-bay. None of them are outstanding, but just what appear to be decent shavers. The first three come pre-honed by a vendor who people here and SRP speak will of. The last one looks to be almost new.

2577

2578

2579

2580

The total for all four razors was about $100 - which I think is pretty good given that three are shave-ready (assuming that this is actually the case - if they're not, well there goes the value proposition!).

I'm in the process of ordering a strop (hanging for sure and possibly a pasted paddle strop as well).

ouch
10-30-2006, 10:45 AM
Who'd you get them from, Altima?

htownmmm
10-30-2006, 10:48 AM
AOS Lemon shave cream
AOS Lavender shave cream

Both of these were purchased @ Nordstrom's. What was funny, is that after the initial come on by the staff(male), he left me alone. After I was ready to make my purchases we got into a discussion and he then realized I knew what I was talking about. He(Pedro) then asked if I would be interested in conducting a "shave clinic" there at the store. Needless to say, I was shocked, but after I thought about it, it makes sense. I conduct the shave clinic, they sell more products,Pedro gets nice bonus, and we end up with more wet shavers. as I told him, I will have to think about it- not sure if I have the time right now.

BTW, that is a beautiful razor- if I had to get my throat cut, that would be the one to do it!

Yup - I actually wanted the wedge he had on sale, but got sniped - know anything about his honing ability?

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my purchases - assuming they're well honed.

He has some very nice razors up for grabs this week (I shouldn't tell everyone this..., but there's a Dovo and Puma - both of which look very nice and will likely sell for a bunch of $$).

Wow Lyrt. I've been staring at that straight at Classic Shaving for a while. That razor has by itself made me want to get a straight razor (seeing as how I am completely inexperienced with straights and that is probably too expensive for my first). It looks even better in your pics. I will definitely have to get me a straight soon. At least I know what I'll be asking for come Christmas time.

Back on topic I got two DE's in the mail today. A Slim Adjustable and a 30's NEW model.

EDIT: 100 posts!

I had some good luck at the local shops today.
First stop was a local junk shop, where I scored the razors, a puck of unused Palmolive, and some cool holders for $26.00 total.
Second stop was the Indian market, Mysore Sandalwood soap, and Nag Champa soap.
Third stop was a European market where I scored the Pitralon Classic, this is marked as a pre/electric shave, but the shop keeper swore by it as a after shave.
Cheers, DJ.

Just as an FYI - you might want to cut off and get rid of that little piece of rubber on the tang, as water tends to get under it - and it'll develop surface rust under it. A major bummer.....

Thanks Randy - I'd read good things about him and decided to buy a couple of razors at the same time to save on shipping - I'll be a little more discriminating in the future, but I'm happy to have 3 shave-ready straights for under $100.

As for Tony, I just spoke with him yesterday (what a great guy) and I bought one of his 3-inch red latigo hanging strops and a four-sided pasted strop (he told me he's switched to wider stock so that as of November, they will be about 1/4 inch wider (1.75 vs 1.5 inches)). He's also going to throw in a beginners strop (which he does on request for noobs who want a practice strop to use so they don't ruin their good strop while learning), which he says also makes a great travel strop.

Talking to Tony definitely helped me understand the differences between hanging and paddle strops, as well as between pasted strops and hones - 15 minutes on the phone with him likley saved me a bunch of learning time and helped me understand my options and what would likely work better for me.

Once you get the strops, consider using a butter knife for practice. You'll learn how to properly roll the blade over on it's spine. If you have the B&B DVD, you can see Joel strop a razor.

Thanks Randy - I do have the B&B video.

I've actually done the straight thing before (which is why I wasn't worried about buying some spikes), this time around, I'm a little more determined and have some more knowledge.

Last time I bought some used razors, a hone and very cheap paddle strop - while I managed to get the razors sharp enough to shave with, they weren't sharp enough for my liking and I got into the DE thing so didn't persevere.

This time, I've bought shave-ready razors, much better equipment and am pretty confident that I'll stick with it.

If nothing else, I'll use the straight on weekends when I have time, although my goal is to make them my primary shaving tool.

Thanks for the advice.

Jim, your best bet would be a brick and mortar store because online you aren't able to actually hold and take samples shots with the camera. A lot of the camera bodies come down to personal preference, the difference comes in the lenses. Sure you;ll save a couple of bucks here and there online but what if the camera you order is not the right fit for you?

Also be sure to go to a store that has a knowledgeable salesperson that you can trust. Stores like Future Shop don't usually have the brightest salespeople but there is one gent at my local one that I have been buying from for a long time now that actually knows what he's talking that's why I choose to buy from him.

Happy Hunting! Can't wait to see what you get!

While I've not bought anything from John, I've spoken to him and my sense is he'd make things right for you.

Jeff, you did it again my friend. This stuff smells and looks incredible (erasmic cream is so far the best smelling of the bunch....but we'll see):

  :w00t: Oooh, Joe my friend, nice haul, what do you want to do with that whole stuff:confused:
The ERASMIC soap in a bowl is really great, has a nice soapy scent and makes a very good lather,...great stuff and very traditional...

Marty

I think you should conduct a shave clinic, you could really help a lot of people. I've actually thought about the same thing in my area, though I don't have enough expertise yet, a couple of years here and I should be good to go!

I received two razors today: a single-blade Gem and a Barbasol.

Can anyone recommend where to buy high quality single edge blades? I have pictured the Barbasol razor along side a Merkur HD to show the scale. It is very very made and I look forward to giving it a try tomorrow.:thumbup1:

Just got home to find that my H. Upmann Robustos arrived from JR Cigar, even though they were supposed to be backordered. Also, my Lavender and Lime shave soaps from Honeybee showed up -- so I am in for a good evening, and a fine morning!

Trumper coconut
Salter Citrus
Salter Mint
Taylor St. James
Taylor Mr. Taylor
Taylor Avocado
Taylor Lemon/Lime

QED sandalwood shave stick (already have the tub, but wanter a stick - weird...)
QED Lemon/cedar shave stick

The bad news: I pressed the wrong button and ordered a tube of lemon/Lime, not a tub.

The good news: it is the old Taylor formulation!

For those who missed the old formulations, you'll have a chance to sample it while it lasts....

“Lensbabies bring one area of your photo into sharp focus, with that "sweet spot" surrounded by graduated blur. You can move the sweet spot to any part of your photo by bending the flexible lens tubing.”

I’m sure the nice macro photos of his Tulip 4 on the previous page were taken with his Canon macro lens, not with the lensbaby.

My wife got me the macro lenses too. The only problem with the lensbaby and the lenses is it is pretty tricky to get the proper focus.

I broke down and tried it last night.

Not as scary as I thought... but its a very different experience. I only had a couple little nicks by the time I was done -- but nothing particularly bad that didn't whoa up by the time I was done.

The shave wasn't bad -- not BBS but about on par with my first DE shave a few months ago. So I wasn't discouraged, and I figure with more practice I'll be able to be fully proficient with the AC, just as I did with the DE. The chin stubble was a total disaster though. That'll be my biggest hurdle. I feel like if I don't go as slow, focus more on skin stretching, and I make less timid strokes, my next go with the AC will improve. I'm excited to eventually master this thing

Tried to upload a pic but my DSLR wont take them small enough. Guess I'll have to use my daughters camera next time. Here's the list.

From Charles:
SR3122
Rose Geranium Soap
Sandlewood Soap
Coral Skin Food

From Lee:
PJ1 in best

From Mama Bear:
B&B Summer Aftershave
English Leather Soap and Cologne (smells great:thumbup: )
Alum Block
(Thx Mama Bear for the samples:biggrin1: )

Talked to both Lee and Charles for quite a while on the phone before deciding on the brushes. They were both great and very helpful. Love both brushes.
A pleasure doing business with all of you.
