I'd like to put up a poll on which is/are the most popular safety razors, that is, which are the go-to, most-often-used razors. Which razors do you think should be included in this poll?

Currently Own:

'62 Superspeed
'60 Fatboy
'56 Red Tip
1920s Open Comb Tuckaway--on the way
Merkur 23C
Rolls Razor--picked up yesterday in excellent condition with a great condition strop and hone for $9 at the Salvation Army store in River North

Although I'm getting great shaves with the 23C, my go to is the Superspeed. That may change. As I get a couple more months of DE racked up and my technique improves, I'll certainly want to give the redtip, fatboy and tuckaway some use.

+1 Either of these or 1940's Aristocrat. I get great shaves from all three.

I've not done a poll but I can figure it out. To me, the real questions is how to design the poll. If it's too small it's meaningless, if it's too inclusive it's unmanageable and possibly also meaningless.

How do we narrow the large variety? I think it'd be better if one of the experts designed the poll.

So, we have to sort of do a poll, so you can create a poll?

Given the limitations of the number of answers a poll can have, it might be best to start off with a series of elimination polls so that at least most DE models can be included. Then take the winners from each and put them in a final poll to pick the top winner.

Now - Is the purpose to pick the most desirable one, or the one that the most own?

I think the purpose is to pick the one that most people would choose to shave with on a daily basis.

Let's not forget the
Gillette NEW
Gillette OLD
Merkur Open Comb

I am wondering if this shouldn't be done has 2 polls. One for the manifacturer (e.g. Merkur, Gillette, Muhle, etc.) and one for the style (Slant, Open Comb, etc). If those two cannot be grouped, then, it might be meaningless... Mmm, the best of the best in 12 choices... What do you have so far?

You will probably get Merkur Slant, Merkur HD, '40's SuperSpeed. '50's SuperSpeed, Gillette New/New Improved, Gillette Fatboy, Gillette Slim Adjustable, Gillette Aristocrat, Gillette President/Diplomat, Gillette Super Adjustable, Gillette Tech, Schick Krona, and Gillette Old Type as your top answers. Open it up to all safety razors and you will get the GEM's and the Injectors.

Well one should remember this is a poll for "most popular" NOT most desired. I would say the fatboy on the gillette side and the HD on the merkur side... I would put just those two and see which wins.

I'm not sure what this poll is about  . . . The title reads "most popular DE", but in the opening post it asks about the most popular "safety razor". Those terms are not synonymous. Also included in the term "safety razors", besides DE's, you also have SE's and injectors and perhaps even disposables and cartridge razors, :w00t: .

In a later post you indicate what you are after is, "If you could only have one razor, what would it be". This is a different question from the two above. I don't doubt that my favorite isn't likely the "most popular".

If you are really asking about the most popular DE, I would say the Gillette Superspeed or perhaps the Merkur HD.

If you are asking about the most popular safety razor, I suppose it would likely be one of those plastic things. :frown:

If you are asking about my favorite safety razor, my vote would go to the 1900/1901 patent Gem Jr. Bar Razor which is certainly not a DE.

If you are asking about my favorite DE, it would likely be the red tip Superspeed or possibly the Barbasol Razor.

So, for the four different polls you seem to be taking, there are my four answers. :001_smile

Tom

I think it is Merkur HD. This model is in production since 1931, almost unchanged...

And those Super Speeds are popular, but you have many models (40s style, 50s Flare tip which includes blue, red and silver tip, then 60s&70s black handled...), and they all are Super speeds, but they are very different...

I can give it a shot but Bob did the hard work

Bob
Very good list. It would give a good idea on who prefer what and considering that we can only create a poll with 12 options, it cannot be more detailed than that.

Tom
I think that erudolph idea was to ask "If you could reach for one razor only, which one could it be? Which razor would you use the most often?"

---
This could be a good first poll and maybe it can be broken in different manifacturer after (new polls). Like, same question but Gillette only poll, Merkur only, etc.

Just ask "What is your favorite shaving implement" and keep score at home. If you keep abreast of the forums, you can get a good idea of the popular razors without having to resort to a poll. You can also do a search and more than likely find numerous examples of similar polls/questions.

Very good list. ...

Except I left out the Merkur 11C (a slant). Perhaps others could look at the list and identify any missing razors, especially if there is no category to hold them.

Ah, so it is not a slant? Then I would put it in the open comb category as that seems to distinguish it more than being an HD.

One has nothing to do with the other. I have been noticing many of these polls lately are being lead off by newer members, which is great, but I think many of those who have tried many different razors and products, and have been around awhile, just don't chime in as quickly as they used to. I'm not sure why. Maybe they are just too busy talking about coffee, tea or food these days.

I think most popular at any given time will revolve around what is most easily available for a fair price and that will change over time. While a poll today may very easily be different from a poll a year or two ago, it has nothing to do with where a person chimes in with their choice. I have even seen polls swing 180 degrees, after a pretty good head of steam, on Monday when those who don't check-in on the weekend go back to "work."

2. Other modern safety razor (Parker, Weishi, Muehle, Goodfella)

This should not be like Family Feud in which the contestants are trying to guess what the most popular answer is. Instead, say what you like. The results of all the answers will tell us what is the most popular, at least for those participating in the poll.

I guess I don't the see the value of group #1 when it includes razors so unlike each other. Folks who would have choosen one of these razors won't want to vote for this whole group.

Same thing with group #2 . . . no one would want to vote for these diverse razors as a group either.

In group #4, I also don't feel most people who would choose either a New or a New Improved would want to vote on a catagory that included such diverse razors as these two types are. By the way, Krumholz doesn't group these two types of razors together.

Some of the other groups, such as group #12 also include such diverse razors that I really don't feel many people will be able to relate to them either.

Perhaps I'm not understanding what you are trying to determine with such a poll, but I don't feel it will be of any statistical value due to many people not really having a reasonable choice that represents their favorite razor.

Tom

The value is that each is a category to cover those razors within it. This is not supposed to be a vote for the whole group, but a way to find popular razors. You are voting for your razor by identifying which of those groups it belongs to. If it turns out that one of these groups has a very large vote count than a subsequent poll can sort that out.

This shouldn't be thought of as a competition where you are loath to put in a vote that might give an "advantage" to some other razor. It is a first-pass wide swipe at narrowing things down. Think of it as reduction instead of removal.:001_smile

In group #4, I also don't feel most people who would choose either a New or a New Improved would want to vote on a catagory that included such diverse razors as these two types are. By the way, Krumholz doesn't group these two types of razors together.

Again, why would someone not want to vote for the group that includes their favorite razor?

re Krumholz: My original list broke the Gillettes down further (alal Krumholz) but we are limited to the number of items in a poll. Again, if a group gets a large number of votes it will be interesting to break that down in a subsequent poll. If a group only has, say 3%, of the votes we can forget about it.

Some of the other groups, such as group #12 also include such diverse razors that I really don't feel many people will be able to relate to them either.

Same comments as above.

Perhaps I'm not understanding what you are trying to determine with such a poll, but I don't feel it will be of any statistical value due to many people not really having a reasonable choice that represents their favorite razor.

Name a razor that doesn't have a reasonable choice. I am not being facetious, but if there is a substantial set of razors that doesn't fit into the above we need to rethink it. If there is some odd-ball razor (e.g. an Enders) there is the "other" category. One category I can think of that isn't mentioned but probably can be squeezed into "other old" are the various Gillette "clones" from Germany and other places.
