Here at Bob's Razor Works we're always trying to come up with new ideas while perfecting the old ones.
I've come up with a Barber Pole handle with an exotic wooden knob.
I have this Black and White Ebony available on my site.
I've also come up with a technique to duplicate the crisscross barber pole knurling Gillette used on razors like the bull dog.
I'll have some of those available shortly with and without wooden tips.

I've got a custom set on the way from Bob, if it looks 1/10 as nice in person as it does in the pics it will be an amazing set! I'll post pics once it comes in.

Oh and BTW anyone considering doing business with Bob, to quote the NIKE franchise, "Just do it!"

Bob is a great guy. In fact after our transaction he refunded me $5 after discovering that shipping was less than he anticipated. That is certainly something he didn't have to do and for what I'm getting he certainly could have kept the $5.

Great guy, great products!

Years ago, I had a polished Merkur Futur. It was a great razor but it constantly slipped in my hands because it was too smooth. I brought up the idea of knurling the handle. Everyone said that I shouldn't do it and I played it safe and obeyed. Seeing your success, I should've thrown caution to the wind. Very nicely done, Bob. :thumbup1:

Yes, it a 4 piece razor, the knob is attached with a piece of #10-32 threaded rod. Ifa person wants the knob "Locktite" on then it would be a regular 3 piece razor.
I like the option of changing the knob.
I have exotic wooden tips, Knurled and Fluted.

Very nice Bob. Is the bulldog basically either an OLD or a NEW with a 1920's Aristocrat handle? But unlike the combed Aristocrat (#15?) the blade gap is non-adjustable?

The Bull Mastiff is a handle that will fit any 3 piece razor except a small gapped NEWs.
(30 seconds with a dremel tool will fix that.)
It's made from solid brass by me on my 1953 South Bend 9A
(see my website for pictures)
The barrel of the handle is .490 and 2 1/2 inches long, the knob is .590 and 5/8 inches long.
Total is 3 1/8 inches long and the weight is 77 grams.
Since it's a true 3 piece razor the gap is non adjustable.

I think I'm going to be able to fill the demand for replated NEW heads.
But the cost has been high, I've had to fend off snipers and pay more then in the past.
The cost for NEW heads is going up from $20 to $25 and I'm only going to provide them to clients who purchase my custom handle.
Sorry for the inconvenience but I'm really in the custom razor and brush business not the replating business.
I spend too much time chasing down and refurbishing these heads as it is and it take time away from the work I like.

The one on the bottom is my favorite so far. Is that burl wood?

Yes, that's Amboyna burl.
I make these small knobs from the cut off from the razor handles.
I drill, tap and epoxy a piece of #10-32 SS threaded rod into the blank, then mount thread the blank on a 1/2 brass mandrel, then chuck k it in the lathe and shape and finish it.

That Bull Mastiff is awesome, the 'no pressure' rule takes a whole new angle! What will be at the end of the handle?

Mine has a recently replated NEW head. I have the standard Bull Mastiff knob as well as a custom Black and White Ebony knob to math my custom set from Bob. I think I'll be using a 7 O'clock Yellow Blade tomorrow.

I've added a diamond knurled knob option to my composite handles.
These handles aren't hollow, the wood blank is epoxied to a 5/16th brass rod before turning.
The knob and spindle are then attached to the barrel with stainless steel threaded rod.
This give the handles a nice heft (87-91 grams depending on the wood with a new head) that you just can't get with a hollow handle.
Prices are $40 for the regular wooden handles, $45 for Burl wood.
Heads are $25 for the NEWS, $20 for Old Style and Tech.
Knob options are spiral knurling, diamond knurling, fluted or matching wood.

Thanks SlagleRock,

I was just sitting at the table having breakfast with my wife, when she asked what I would like from the boys and her for the upcoming Father's Day, maybe something shaving related?. I usually say something like, "I'm just fine, I don't need anything". This morning I said, "Well, there is a custom razor I would like to try".

I also realized afterward that I have an old Gillette NEW amongst my DE's that I cleaned up quite a while ago but never shaved with it, so I'm going to have a shave with it this morning and if I like the results I am going to order a Bull Mastiff from Bob...if they are still available.

BTW, I just read the thread about the Memorial Day PIF and want to say congratulations to you, that was an amazing compilation of shave goodies. And also think it was incredibly generous of you to make up six wonderful starter sets to PIF to your Dad and comrades. Well Done Sir!

Kudos also to ProfessorChaos and Sluggo for a terrific PIF. I was the recipient of one of Henry's (professorchaos) generous PIF's as a noob. He's a great guy, always quick to help with info and endless generosity.

Thanks again for your reply!

Eric/Mer sent me some Linen Micarta so I made up a handle.
This is an epoxy resin and a very fine cotton linen.
It's heavier then wood and the fabric makes it look kinda like lacewood.
Unlike even exotic hardwoods it's impervious to moisture and seems practically indestructible.
I can't break a 6 inch long 1/2 inch diameter rod in half with my hands.

Thanks to a certain member here and some aggressive searching on e-bay.
I at least for now have a ample stock of NEW heads for my custom handles.
These heads go through a extensive reconditioning process before they are sent out to be nickel plated.
Since NEW head have large and small gaps on their base plate and the Bull Mastiff has a large tip (.390) 1st step is to open the gap so these head will fit any razor handle.
Next I block the cap on all 4 sides and run a #10-32 die down the threaded stem.
I clean and sand out with emery paper any nicks and scratches and buff the caps out.
On the base plate after I open the gap, I spray them with oven cleaner to remove any clear coat, I clean between the teen with a dremel wire wheel and emery paper.
I then buff and after buffing soak them in lacquer thinner to remove any residue.
I then give them a scrub in hot soapy water, mate the base plates to the caps and they're ready to be sent out for plating.
When the come back from plating, I mate them with a handle install a blade and inspect them for proper blade alignment.
The they're wrapped and sent out for another 70-80 years of whisker watching.

Im still curious what a nickel plated fluted knob would look like on a bull mastiff. Nice new handles. It is cool to see such variety in your product range.

Have you ever tried mating a Parker safety bar head to the bull mastiff? It doesn't seem to screw on. I am thinking they overplated the threads of the head, and maybe their handles were overtapped or whatever. I tried to put my parker head (the one that looks like the EJ/Muhle head), and it would not fit. In the interest of not ruining the plating on the head, I did not force it.

I don't have any fluted knobs on hand.
Here's a picture of 1 before it was plated.
I now have the larger metric tap.
Does a Gillette head screw onto the Parker handle?
If so it's a M5x.08 and I can run the metric tap into your handle and the metric heads will screw on and so will the old Gillettes.

Wow, Bob, that Bull Mastiff Bobgress is tempting... How's the weight compared to the stock Progress?

Please don't use the term Bobgress.
It's a truly custom handle with a Progress head.
Weight is about 110 grams, just a bit more then a stock Progress with a all metal knob.
Since this is a Bespoke razor each one would be different.
I don't expect much call for them as it a bit of work.

Ever think of making butterscotch razors and brushes?

I don't really like turning plastic and while pen blanks are suitable for razor handle and easy to procure matching blanks suitable for brush handles aren't as easy to come by.
Besides I don't believe plastic has the beauty of nice exotic woods.
All these composite handles have the wooden blank epoxied to a 5/16th brass core.
This way you get the beauty of wood and the weight and balance of a metal handled razor.

Nice work Bob! I still love my original BM!

This will be an alternative to those who find a 100 gram razor too heavy.
This stubby handle weighs 54 grams with a NEW head so a full length BM handle in aluminum with a NEW head would be about 58-60 grams.

gaseousclay
10-06-2009, 04:42 PM
would there be a price difference between the two? do you know what the weight would be with a Tech head? I prefer lightweight razors personally which is why I think i'm so fond of the Tech -- I just weighed my fat handle and it comes to 50 grams. although, the BM is such an awesome looking razor and part of me thinks I would enjoy all that extra weight

Yes, since aluminum is cheaper they brass and I wouldn't be paying to have the parts plated the price would be $30 instead of $40 for the nickel plated Bull Mastiff.
As for weight a Bull Mastiff handle weighs 79 grams, 1 of these aluminum handles is going to weigh between 28 and 30 grams.
A new head is 30 grams and a Tech head is 25 grams.
So a BM ultra lite with a Tech head is going to weigh between 53 and 54 grams.
Weight could be altered by changing knobs as the nickel plated knob weighs 23 grams and the aluminum knob weighs 9 grams.

Some people have noted in the past that wooden handles were too light and made for a razor that was head heavy.
I've alleviated that problem by boring out the blank and epoxying a 5/16th by 2 inch brass rod.
This not only give the handle perfect weight (51.5 grams) and balance but provide a better attachment point for the spindle.
Price is $45 for the handle only, razor heads available at additional cost.

I was considering a TTO head when I ordered my BM Deluxe. Is it possible to order a TTO head from Bob to use on the same handle? Does Bob do just heads, say if I mail him a TTO head? I am also wondering if Bob sells just handles? I am guessing there is some place that will put a fresh nickel finish on a used head. I assume that if the head were not in good condition the flaws would show up even after they got the fresh finish. I am guessing that Bob might want to keep the heads he is able to locate for entire razor sales as I think his main interest is handle construction.

Does anyone know if those TTO heads just screw on & off the plastic handles they come on? For some reason I thought they were manufactured with a solid steel post that Bob was threading to fit his and most 3 piece handles. No telling where I came up with that theory, although I'm sure we could come up with some sort of stock response.

Would be fun to have a couple of Bob's handles, say the fat and slim types and have the ability to swap them around. OMG did I just fall into whatever the RAD trap is????????

There was a post not too long ago of a TTO with a Bull Mastiff handle. I believe that it was based on a Gillette Knack (http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Gillette_Knack) - with that model, the TTO mechanism is at the top of the handle. So maybe if you can find a good Knack, and if Bob's interested in making another one....

The TTO heads only fit the custom made BM TTO handles.
The TTO heads are permanently fastened to the handles, if they weren't turning the TTO collar would cause it to detach from the head and the small parts inside could easily become lost rendering the razor inoperable.

Thanks for that explanation Bob.

I guess I know what I want next. That British Knack head looks very nice on the Deluxe handle. I am sorely tempted.

If I had not just received my nickel Deluxe Bull Mastiff with the Long Tooth New head today.... It's beautiful Bob, I appreciate the excellent service and edification as well. Tomorrow morning, if I can wait that long, I get my first shave with an open comb razor. I'm hoping it will help tame that tough hair on my neck.

Sorry to reply after my own thread but....

I couldn't wait, I put the Deluxe Bull Mastiff with New Long Tooth Comb to work just before bed. I hate to jump to cause but, I think Bob's handle and the open comb head gave me the best shave I have ever had. I also seem to have less irritation as I did not have to buff my hide off trying to remove stubble.

The open comb razor seemed to: get closer, make the hair stand up better and take more stubble per pass. Although I did not have a baby butt to test with, I am confident I have a closer shave with less effort. The heavy handle seemed to give the blade the authority it needed to strike the hair down close to the skin after the teeth got them to stand at attention. Whats more the razor is a pleasure to use.

Kudos to Bob for producing such a fine instrument for pairing stubborn stubble.

Bob , Is the Knack head the only TTO you use for your BMTTO?

Yes that and the Slim Twist, all the mechanism is in the head assembly.
Making a custom razor out of a bottom knob TTO wouldn't work as the barrel contains the inner threads for the raising and lowering of the silo doors.

BTW, it's sold.

I received this razor handle as a Christmas gift a few days ago. After Bob posted this photo, my son contacted Bob and amazingly, this lovely instrument was still available! I love it. I've mated it to a beautiful Merkur 11c open comb head. This combo works! Thanks for making this razor (for me) Bob.

Have you ever made custom adjustable handles? I'm extremely impressed with those TTOs, and while I've never much liked the Fatboy handles, a custom one would be amazing.

I'm currently awaiting the arrival of an Old Type Gillette Open Comb from eBay, and I can't help but think how great it would look with one of your Bull Mastiff handles...

It's not feasible, with the Knack/Slim Twist heads the entire TTO mechanism is right under the head, with a regular Gillette TTO the inside if the barrel is threaded with the lifting screw.

Maybe a little off-topic here, but how aggressive are the Knack/Slim heads compared to other Gillette TTO's of the day?
I'm sure they are less aggressive than the older open comb designs.
I really like models #2 & #4

I've not used 1 with the plastic handle still installed but with the added weigh of the metal handle I found that it was comparable to my mid 50s Aristocrat.

Greg asked if I could make keys for the psycho razors, I said sure then he said he needed a 100 or more.
I told him I wasn't interested in making a 100 of anything, I get bored making the same thing over and over.
Looks like Pikes going to make then but if anyone wants one with a Bull Mastiff knob let me know.
I can also do fluted, same knobs as those on my razor handles.

Bob,
Shaved with both Bull Mastiff TTO.
They handle much better now with the heavier handles.
The Knacks and Twists were pretty mild razors but the extra weighted handles do make a difference.
I think both have found a place in the rotation!

I know it's a shameless copy but here's what I'm calling my Improved handle at least until I come up with a better name.
This ones 7/16 in diameter and 3 1/4 inches long, but the design allows flexibility in length and groove placement.
$35, NEW head $25
