Personally I dig the traditional 3.25"ish handles in the thicker hevier widths. My hands are not small, and before i started using them I wouldn'ta thunk it, but they fit very comfortably in my hand, and give just the right sort of balance and grip for the no pressure shave.
Out of curiosity, what's the difference between your Bull Mastiff, and Bull Mastiff Deluxe handles? I just picked up a deluxe of the BST, but I can't really tell the difference between that and the Bull Mastiff from the pictures.

Indeed, I was purchasing it more based upon the picture than on the name, and I was happy, but jgkeegan is a standup guy, and refunded me $5 which is the difference in what Bob charges for the Deluxe handle, so now I'm even $5 happier with my purchase, AND I know what to call it. :P
Well actually... I'm not sure what to call it really... Maybe Spike?

No that razor has been sent to it new home in Sweden.
No clear coat, want to have the finish naturally age.
I also did my bronze razor but I'm having trouble getting the solid bronze handle as dark as the plated head.
I'm thinking of trying Ferric Nitrate/Ferric Chloride mix.
You can get the chemicals here.

There's also some video on you Tube.

I just put the parts in the oven on a paper towel on a cookie sheet then spritz them.
Most of these chemical will work on copper and brass too.

Sometimes you just get lucky, when I went to my sources studio looking for a piece of Amboyna Burl I was lucky that he had 1 piece left from his last shipment.
He ran the blank through his planer exposing the grain and we could see that it had solid eyes form end to end.
I decide that to get the best use out of this blank with no waste I'd turn 2 long handles end to end.
Now this can be kinda scary as Burl wood is all twisty grain without the long grain running from end to end that a normal piece of wood has.
This blank was 11 inches long and I was concerned with it snapping in half due to a defect in the grain structure.
It was a bitch to turn, I had to support the backside with my hand as I turned it, but it was without a doubt the nicest piece of Burl I'd ever turned.
I sent the client some pictures giving him the choice of which handle he wanted, he sent a reply that he'd like to buy both handle.
I was going to offer the 2nd handle here but alas they're both sold along with a Burl tipped Bull Mastiff handle.

Hi Bob,
I just got a Slim Twist and I posted a question about getting a different handle.
http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=201061
Now I see that you can transplant the head onto another handle I would be interested to see what my options are. I don't necessarily want another long handle on it. Something similar to the length and weight of a Red Tip would be cool. Thanks.

You need to send me a PM, I don't do business on the opened forum.
I can do the handle any length, the diameter needs to be 7/16ths to match the TTO knob.
Unless your razor is in excellent condition you'd probably be better off using one of my NOS heads.
Bob.

At BRW we don't copy, we innovate and improve.
Keeping with that I have some new products and improvements.
First off is a 2 piece travel version of my Improved handle, this ones nickel plated brass and when it's screwed together it's impossible to see where it's joined together.
2nd I had discontinued making my TTO razor due to the hit or miss quality of the heads I was able to procure, well I recently did some horse trading with a fellow in the Netherlands and scored some NOS T1000 Slim Twist which I'm using on my TTOs.
Here's are pictures of 2 razors that I've made before they're nickel plated.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_6P_7INYCblE/TGwTNfRjffI/AAAAAAAACN0/uSToHWJdP98/s720/Aug%20eightteen%20007.jpg
The razor pictured above, this looks a bit slimmer than the usual BM. Is this true? If so, do you happen to know the weight of the handle without the slim twist head?
I love your razors, but I think any of the BM handles would be a bit too heavy for my tastes.

The alignment issue is one that exists on unmodified Progress razors.
Since Bob removes the handle from the Progress and replaces it with his own, there are no alignment issues. He draws the mark on the barrel of the handle to align with one of the red ones on the knob.

Stella & creative work with the (originally cheap looking) Progress, Bob. Are knurl patterns and handle material restricted to this one design? I see the images in the above posts found here (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=174969&highlight=bob%27s+progress) and wondered Bob if you already cater for Gillette adjustables such as the SLIM and FatBoy?

While Bob's Razor Works has made money it hasn't make enough money to cover all my expenses.
I've had to cover the difference with my savings (inheritance) and finally I had to cash in my IRA.
These funds are almost exhausted and I'm going to be forced to give up on my American dream of home ownership and move.
I hope to move in with friends that will allow me to set up shop as this the only way I have of making any money since the collapse of the housing industry in Northern California.

The vintage Progress is better made then the current razors, it weighs several grams more and the blade platform has less play and a more solid feel to it.
Here's an old picture from 07, slant is long gone.

The Progress and the Toggle are sold.
Here I have almost mint condition Merkur HD, it would be mint except I drilled the knob and install a 5/16th rare earth magnet, this is like the magnet I use with the Bull Mastiff handle except it's larger.
This razor is being sold with a vintage ivory plastic Merkur box, these were the boxes Chessman sold his vintage slant with, far superior to the POS case Merkur uses now.
$50 and $7 for Priority Mail S&H.

Bob,
First of all: very sorry for your loss, but I'm glad to see you're back at your great work. Sometimes a return to the familiar can help calm the nerves.
As a side thought:
A lot of folks worry (obsess) about the different grip options with the 2009 Muhle/EJ shaving head and whether each one is too slippery. Have you ever, or would you consider making a knurled style handle threaded to receive those? Sorry if this is already offered and I've missed it. It just sounds like something people might appreciate as an option, especially since the heads are also offered individually.

Any of Bob's handles would do the trick if you specify metric threads. I originally got a Bull Mastiff XL handle from Bob because the handle on my Muhle R106 was slippery. It has knurling and vertical lines.
And Bob, you have my condolences as well for your loss.

Been wanting something from Bob for a while and just received my order for a handle and stand - let's just say it is outstanding work!
Here it is mounted to a Muehle head:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1VGSb6US5pU/TeqTnyBPjyI/AAAAAAAACf0/FEt6U9dJrHI/bobsrazorworks_handle.JPG
Here it is in the stand - Bob drilled the two sides of the stand (reversible) to accept the bull mastif deluxe on one side and my Muehle handle on the other. I had to provide the diameter of the Muehle handle and it didn't end up fitting quite as cleanly, which I think has to do with the design of the handle (it has two rings/bumps that are larger diameter than the rest of the handle, so it sits a little cocked instead of straight up):
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-qh6WLut5hMk/TeqToBDe--I/AAAAAAAACf4/H2qZnRfEe-k/s512/bobsrazorworks_stand.JPG
Looks pretty nice in the cabinet too and completely satisfies my desire for an elegant stand that fits compactly in its place (and I have no use for a brush/razor combo stand):

Damn, just what I need for my shattered wrist:( screws come out in two days.
It really quite comfortable to shave with , if I was making one for myself I'd probably make it slightly shorter as I shave my head.
It's got 2 1/2 inches of 1/4 inch brass rod epoxied in the handle, this gives some needed weight "46grams" and provides a secure anchor point for the spindle.

LOL= that is sweet huh!?
It's 81 grams. It's actually a Durham Duplex handle and a Gillette head.
It looks INCREDIBLE. The handle has a nice pinky rest.
Bob's Flare knobs on his 3 1/8 handles have the same balance and fit. The way people buy super long handles is surprising. The dexterity you lose on an uber long handle is significant.
I have one of Bob's shorter handles with a Stahley head on it. One of my favorites. On a longer handle it wouldn't be the same.

That's the clients handle and NEW Deluxe head, when you commission 2 customs I'll send your razor out to be replated.
It actually turned out nicer then I though it would, usually old knurled handle look like crap when replated, the new plating makes all the dings in the knurling stand out and there's no practical way to refurbish the knurling.

Agreed about the issues with very long handles. I have made this mistake myself, and regretted it. The 3.25-3.5" handles are the easiest to handle around the face.
The extra length of the long handles coupled with the weight increase does lead to some sluggishness, and also discomfort while shaving. It's like trying to shave with a razor head attached to a 2 lb barbell  - not conducive to dexterity!
Of course, that being said, this is an area of personal preference.

100% Agreed. Sweet spot for me is the 3 inch to the 3.25 inch overall length of handle.

For me the sweet spot is 3 1/8th to 3 1/4 the exception being the long handle super adjustable.
But when a client wants a 4 inch handle even after I tell them with head it's going to weigh 130 that's what I give them.

I agree. However, I am the proud owner of the American Bull Mastiff XXL and while you lose some dexterity, the feel of the handle is just fantastic. Paired with an Old Type Head, I find I am using it for when I can enjoy my shave and don't have to rush. For rush jobs, I use a notched 1940's super speed and that seems to work fine but the shave I get with my American Bull Mastiff XXL is just awesome. That said, I want to eventually order a regular sized one. :001_tt1:

I used the newly made custom New Improved to shave my head twice since receiving it. It's really perfect for the job and is a joy to get the back of my head. I always had trouble with a DE on the back of my neck and around my ears. This razor is long enough to hold above and behind my head, which is hard enough to begin with. It's also exquisitely balanced without being too heavy.
I was concerned it may be too long at first, but in using it I have no trouble maneuvering about and getting all the touch up and detail spots. Really, the balance is amazing.
As always the finish is fabulous with superb attention to detail.

What posts are you having problems with? For post numbers 618, 621, 622, 636, 654, 667, 669, and 671, the pictures show up just fine for me.
For some of Bob's first posts in this thread, like post numbers 1, 6, 10, 16, 33, and 38, I have the same problem. The pictures must have been moved from their original linked location from the third party hosting site. Bob, forgive me for questioning in your photo thread, but these are gorgeous. They all seem to have that open comb head.
I've fallen in love with my EJ DE 89 razors, I don't want to change that head. Do you make 'grippier' handles about the size and weight (or just a little more) than the Edwin Jagger Barley Chrome? I like the deeper knurling on your handles, but I don't want to upset the weight and balance too much. I think the Barley Chrome is 3.7" long and about 2.7 oz. If you have something close, I'd love it. I am willing to experiment with heavier weight handles, too.
Do you just sell the handle or can you put a Muhle 89 head on it and sell the complete razor?
Thanks, and sorry if these are stupid questions.

No. At least not by me with the tooling I have available.
Totally different adjustment mechanisms, Progress has a relatively simple spring loaded blade platform control by the graduated knob assembly.
With the Gillette adjustable TTOs the handle is part of not only the open mechanism but also the adjustment.

All the Bull Mastiff handles are sold in standard and deluxe versions, the only difference is the cut grooves on the barrel and $5.

I don't turn many brushes and never one with a 30mm not before.
This thing is a beast and the last item I turn from East Indian Rosewood as it's giving me a rash when I turn it in spite of all the protection I wear

Here's a picture with it next to a normal size brush,

The knobs are removable and interchangeable, I offer this knob option on the Deluxe Bull Mastiffs all the time.
Some client buy both knobs ar this knob is several grams lighter then the standard knob.
so if buy a standard Bull Mastiff handle and want to add a knob later, i can do that?

Hi Bob!
This is my first time really looking at and considering your handles before, and I really dig 'em!
I recently got a Muhle R89 razor, which I love. But the stock handle, while nice looking, is very slippery and lacks serious grip. I'd like to refit it with one of your handles. Can you make any recommendations on which to go with, or what you could put together? I like a slightly longer handle, but not as long as a barberpole. I want serious grip all around and definitely at the tip. A nice balanced weight, nothing real hefty. And I want it to compliment the Muhle R89 head, not look oversized to it.
Look forward to your thoughts!

No, handles are sold with the knob of your choice, if you want to remove the knob to shave that's up to you.

All the knobs are attached with a piece of #10-32 SS threaded rod that's held by lock-tite to the knob.
Knobs are removable and interchangeable, spiral and fluted knobs weigh about 24 grams, flared knobs are several grams lighter and the wooden knobs are under 10 grams.
Improved handles are available in just about any length and diameter you wish (within reason) and with a round or square butt.

good to know, thanks Bob...i had no idea the improved was available in different diameters and different butts....now i have even more to think about.
Most often the Improved is request in standard diameter 7/16 or HD 1/2 inch, the square butt gets a magnet installed in the end.

Thank you TYdeFan05! That helped a great deal actually. I've got a much better idea now thanks to you and a couple others what I could expect were I to go with Bob's handles. I'll be looking elsewhere.

Bob,
Do you still do the black anodized Bull Mastiff handles and would it be available in the deluxe as well as the standard version? How would the weight compare to the regular Bull Mastiff?

You do realize this section of the forum isn't for discussions, it for me to show pictures of my stuff.
Please don't post your pictures in my vendors thread, that's what the safety razor forum is for.
There a link in my signature to my website where's theres slideshows of most of my razor handles.
Honestly, you should thank the other members for trying to assist in selling your "stuff", since you didn't seem to want to do that yourself. They were responding to a politely asked question about which of your handles would best fit a particular razor head with actual picture examples that tried to answer that question. It wasn't their responsibility to do so, it should have been yours.

I didn't post the picture, I quoted it. Nevermind the fact there's nothing in the rules that says people can't post in vendor's threads. But yeah, um, so much for that. I'll save my money. Geez. You're quite the rude fellow as I'm noticing now.

No Anodized aluminum available at this time, the anodizing shop I was using had too large of a minimum batch size (50 pieces) and they all had to be the same color.
I hope to find an anodizer who will allow me to offer handles in a rainbow of color.
The aluminum handles weigh about 1/3rd the weight of the brass handles, BM handle 26 grams versus 78 for brass handle.

So how much do your wooden handles weigh then? I know I already am going to be getting one heh, but just curious in comparison. Looking forward to getting my first handle and then hoping I don't end up like KM-Instructor and buying 12 or 13 more R41's and then needing handles for all of them rofl.

Have you made a fat handle like the EJ Georgian? Might consider one in ebony wood. Thanks

Hi Bob,

I've actually made 2, this one out of Black and White Ebony, I don't use this wood anymore as it's prone to crack after it's turned.

and this one from Purpleheart, after I made it the client backed out, now I require payment in advanced on 1 off customs, this handle sat on my site for 6 months, I ended up discounting it to one of my regulars.

Black ebony would be a good choice.

I thought ebony was a protected wood nowadays, and thus illegal to buy/sell? I work at a woodworking shop and there was some idle chat on the subject recently, though I don't recall the details. I know Gibson guitars had some kind of legal troubles recently involving their rosewood sources and documentation.
Just curious.

Hi Bob,
Is there any way you can elongate a golden Merkur HD? I like the head of the razor, but I'd like the razor to be longer. I know you can pull out the ring/knob at the bottom so maybe you can work with that.

I can cut the head from the barrel and make a new barrel and matching knob assembly, but the shop I use doesn't do gold plating just nickel, but an item would have to be nickel plated before being gold plated so you'd just need to find someone to do the gold plating.

Here's another client requested handle.
I call it the Baby Bull shown here with a nickel plated Tech Head.
