Now that I have a couple of Safety Razors, at least 8 tubs of Soap, Poraso in a tube, a Hydro(whatever) Cube and Shave Cream tub,an alum block (hopefully this week) and a multitude of DE Blades, and a/s balms, what suggestions might one have when travelling.
I can't see lugging all of this in a dop-kit. Is there some little Mini-Kit out there with maybe a shave cream, small brush and small come apart razor?
I hate to regress to hotel shower soap and a Gilette multi blade.
Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

I just went on a road trip to Baltimore for four days. Here's the set-up I brought along (I took this shot in the hotel). I also had a little plastic 5-pack box of Derby Extras. I did not find it too much to pack.
Cheers,
This (http://www.badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=4092&highlight=dopp) thread talked about it a little-
I hate to have to travel and feel like I am getting a crappy shave in any way, so I bring everything with me-
I have a 2nd razor- I make up small creams and soaps in 1/3 size tubs.
Small Witch hazel and aftershave balms and decants of fragrances.
I also keep my Omega Sunshine brush and leave that in my Dopp kit so
its a grab and go situation.

I travel full time for a living. I purchased the largest leather shave bag I could find (about double the size of a typical kit bag) and it holds more stuff than you can imagine. It typically contains:
1 tube of shave cream
2 razors in leather travel cases
1 small ceramic bowl
1 jar Proraso preshave
1 bottle Aqua Velva Blue Ice splash
1 bottle Aqua Velva Blue Ice balm
1 bottle Penaud Bay Rum a/s
1 atomizer bottle of cologne
1 shave brush in medicine bottle (holes in cap)
1 toothbrush in plastic travel case
1 tube toothpaste
In the side zipper compartment:
1 small pair trimming scissors
1 styptic pencil
5 packs blades
I have a sealable plastic box that I use to carry extra tubes of shave cream, more blades, and a couple more razors.

I decided a needed a bigger bag too. I just ordered this (http://www.ebags.com/piel/deluxe_toiletry_kit/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=79557) bag from eBags. I wanted a leather bag and something larger than average. At 12.5"x11"x7.5" it may not be as big as what Mason is describing, but that's pretty large.
I'll report back when it arrives and let everyone know what I think.

you could take the proraso, and 5 pack of blades, a handle, and some brush. if you bring all your cheaper stuff then you don't have to worry about anything getting broken which always seems to happen to me when i travel on airplanes.

When I ordered a shaving cream sampler from Scotto, I kept the small jars he puts the cream in and I use them for travel. Some people also use Proraso Quick Foam (I know it's blasphemy) but it works well for travel, no need to pack a brush or worry about a wet one.
If you don't have sampler's from Scotto, I'd look at the drug store for a small plastic container and pack some shaving cream in there. You can do the same with aftershave also an atomizer works very well for applying aftershave splashes.
Good luck

Thanks Sue! I've done what shopping around over the Internet that I could and this bag seemed best suited (and most attractive) for my needs. I decided to go with the "saddle" color you see in those photos: I like the natural look of that.
BTW, eBags is having a 20% off sale if you enter the coupon code EMFALLBAK2 at check-out. Sadly, I received an email message with this info only after I placed my order. :frown:

Jeez, I travel with a regular size toiletries bag, but maybe I´m thinking too small! Well, my travel consists of occasional weekend trips to see family. I suppose that if I took more trips and longer trips I´d want to take along more stuff.
A puck of hard shaving soap will travel nicely in a one of those plastic soap boxes, the ones that are made for full-size bars of bath soap. You might need to trim an edge of the soap to make it fit.

Anyone been able to find the Fossil roll-up style Dopp kit?
It's been out of stock everywhere that I've looked.
Fossil has a new roll-up Dopp bag available, but I'm not all that impressed with this new one.
Please PM me if you know where I can order the old style.

For traveling, I keep a mostly-used tube of proraso on hand at all times. In other words, when there's around 10% of a tube left, I stick it in a drawer and save it for my next trip. Then I use up the old mostly-used tube. This saves a TON of space in the toiletry bag.
I also bring:
- The C&E brush in a perscription bottle
- Bottle of Proraso aftershave, in a ziplock bag just in case
- styptic pencil
- razor. usually a 40's SS
- Derby blade 5-pack
I ask for a espresso or coffee mug from the front desk when I arrive.
This isn't significantly more than I used to carry. The brush takes the place of a travel-can of shaving foam. I always used to travel with aftershave. The razor size is close to a Mach-3 I used to use. The pencil is unchanged. The blade pack takes almost no space. I used to travel with a full-sized toothpaste tube - but now I use a travel tube, which leaves room for the used Proraso tube.
And all of this takes less space than the Braun Electric I was using a while too...

Do you know of any other sources?
I even visited a retail Fossil store to no avail.

There are two roll-style bags at eBags:
1. This one is from Briggs & Riley (http://www.ebags.com/briggs_riley/baseline_compact_toiletry_kit/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=82444). It is a bit plain compared with the Fossil bag.
2. This one is fromDerek Alexander (http://www.ebags.com/derek_alexander_leather/roll_top_travel_kit/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=10076). It is leather but still not as intricate as the Fossil bag.
Good luck!
PS: There are two new hanging-style Fossil bags here (http://www.fossil.com/jump.jsp?itemID=2760&itemType=CATEGORY).

The Container Store has leak-proof plastic bottles and jars of all sizes - for next to nothing, price-wise. (I think the store originated in Chicago, but we've a location in Manhattan as well. Perhaps they're on the web? I'll check when I have more time.)
These are great for anything liquid. I've used them for fountain pen inks, and will now pick some more up for shave stuff.
This bag is what I am using now.I picked it up in Cabalas, its sold as a fly fishing accessories and reel bag The quest for the perfect bag continues.

I travel quite a bit for work.
My rule of thumb for travel is never to put anything in my bag that I can't easily replace. Here is what I've been doing. I take a tube of Proraso or C&E. Whichever is the smaller tube.
I take a EJ travel brush from C&E like this:
http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/shopcrabtree_1921_9020132
If I'm going only for 1-2 days, then I'll probably just throw in a Mach3 to keep it simple. On longer trips, I'll take my Merkur HD.
I have a SS and a Fat Boy, but those stay home.
I pack what I can in my old ratty dopp kit, but these days I pack anything that might leak (cologne, etc) in a zip lock bag.
I don't bother taking any kind of bowl or mug. Sometimes the hotel cups might work, but I can lather on my face well enough to get by.

What are everyone's thoughts on travel razors? I've seen the Merkur one around a lot, and it looks pretty good (although it doesn't seem all that much more compact than a regular HD in a case. Any opinions?
Thanks.

I am also interested in a review on the Merkur travel razor. I just purchased it for a friend of mine for Christmas and am curious if it is something he will find useful. Am just waiting on the B&B 2006 brush to complete my present!!

Tim, as another person who travels quite a bit, I highly recommend you take a look at the little kits by Men-U. You could get 3 or 4 entire kits including brush (and drop in your favorite razor and a pack or two of blades) into a single one of many of the Dopp kits listed...
The stuff performs very well, also. My go-to travel kit, although i alter some of the contents from time to time.

Joedy - This one is somewhat similar to the one you're looking for:

As for myself, this is the bag I use:
http://www.colonellittleton.com/images/products2/gp1k.jpg
I have yet to purchase any travel brushes, so i pack my brush into some flexible pvc hose with endcaps that I fashioned out of wood. If it's just a weekend trip or overnight business trip, then I pack some cream into the small sample jars that Nordstrom has. Same thing with my ASB. As for the rest of my travel kit, it includes:
Toothbrush
Soap bar (I hate trying to hold those little quarter inch hotel rectangle soapbars)
Travel size toothpaste
Floss
Razor/blades
Travel pack of cotton swabs
Facewash
shampoo and conditioner (poured into travel size bottles, but bigger than the hotel provided ones)
comb
nail clippers
anti-perspirant/deoderant
all "wet after use" items have their respective travel cases.
small ziplock bag of cotton pads
after 30 years of 80% travel I learned to pack small and light and never check a bag. For shaving:
Tube of Coates Rose(I cornered the market--6 tubes left)
AOS Travel brush(not really necessary)
Gillette Sensor Excel+enough blades for trip
Alum Bar in plastic Container
If I'm gone more than a week I add to this list at a local pharmacy.
What are everyone's thoughts on travel razors? I've seen the Merkur one around a lot, and it looks pretty good (although it doesn't seem all that much more compact than a regular HD in a case. Any opinions?
Thanks.
I believe that Joel had one of these and didn't care for it (maybe he'll chime in here and confirm). Honestly, DE's are not that large (minus the Vision) and I've successfully traveled with any one of several DE's packed into Merkur's leather DE case (I believe it's designed to fit the Classic, HD, Slant, and Progress).

I take:
Vulfix travel brush
Gillette slim adjustable
5 pack of Derby blades
M3 & cartrides (for my noggin)
Nivea face cleanser
Taylor's Avocado or Lavendar
Trumper's Coconut
Proraso AS cream
Neutrogena AS triple defence
Plus the requisite toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, etc....
If I have any of Scotto's samples around, I drop in a couple. I also have a folding bowl from REI that I take.
Pretty small kit that will last me at least two weeks (more, really).

Travel light, travel cheap, travel small. That's what I try to keep in mind.
I have a little freebie toiletries bag from Clarins that fits enough for a whole weekend away:
merkur vision and pack of five derby blades.
travel shaving brush in tube (EJ for C+E).
tube of shaving cream (whatever is getting near enough to empty).
syptic pencil.
post-shave (was GFT skin food in plastic bottle, but may now be DRH milk as smaller).
alum block doubles as deoderant!
little shower gel
little toothpaste
toothbrush
The bag is no larger than 3"x8"x4". I'll be packing it again later for a trip this weekend to Liverpool. I'll try to remember to post pictures of it tomorrow or Monday.
If flying for the weekend with carry on only I'd have to choose between not shaving for the weekend or using a cartridge.

Basically, when I travel, I carry in my toiletries bag a Merkur razor with whichever blades, a deodorant stick, a shave stick with the box it came in and a container of moisturizer, but no a/shave or cologne. Of course, my toothbrush, shampoo, and toothpaste and hairbrush!

+1 on keeping the sample containers. The old Gillettes with the plastic cases are awesome for travel. I either take my 194x Super Speed in the red/clear plastic case or my 1960 Fat Boy with the black/clear space-age looking plastic case. A pack of razor blades (I usually take Derbys and Feathers in case something is wanky with the shave) fit beautifully in the case as that is what they were made for. I just nicked SLCSteve's Simpson Major he had for sale (thanks Steve!), so that will be my new travel brush. Prior, I put my SR 3118 in a pill bottle but either works just fine. I put in a QED shave stick and/or creams packed in Scotto's sample vials, a B&B decant of cologne or Scotto vial of cologne, and usually the trial size container of Trumper Skin Food. The rest of my kitt is filled with the other usual suspects. I follow the threads on the search for THE Dopp bag with great interest as I am looking to replace my smallish nylon Samsonite Dopp I have used for about 15 years.

I like to travel light. I use an old Coach Dopp kit someone gave me that is fairly small. I use a SuperSpeed or Injector, because both are small and light, and not a tragedy if something happens. I do not carry the razor in a case, because that is just more to carry. I do carry a pack of blades. I intended to use my shaving sticks, but they are really too big and heaving for my tastes. So I use a Scotto size sample container of cream, instead. Much more compact. I will either take my little shavemac brush, or just go brushless.
That's for car, or when I have to check baggage. If flying carry-on, I have not developed a good solution. I have used my Mach3 in the past. I think I am going to try to find some Bic Metals, as the Mach3 was not a great experience. I am not about to try any stunt like mailing my blades to myself or buying them at the destination. If I am traveling carry-on it is usually a fairly short trip, whether business or pleasure, and I have better things to do with my time.

I really pack light. However, I don't want to short-change my shave experience when I'm on the road either. So I put all of the shaving toiletries in small clear watertight containters from REI, put a 'retired' brush in a ziplock and take along a couple of straights or my Feather AC, use a sample sized deoderant, travel size toothbrush and toothpaste, and put it all in a similar hanging bag as the pictures but made from Outdoor Research- again from REI.
