does anyone know where I can get a good cheap alum block in San Francisco. I would prefer not to order from the internet. The only thing I have found to buy is the Art of Shaving one, but its $15 and I think I can get one cheaper. Anyone know a place? Thanks

You can usually find them at drug stores. Mama Bear sells one in a container. The alum block will last a long time so it's a semi investment.

The next time you order from QED, add in one of his alum blocks - it's cheap and comes in a nice plastic container. It's a healthy size, too.

I ordered alum blocks from these guys (http://www.shavex.com/). Good deal IMHO.

try these (http://www.tulumba.com/storeItem.asp?ic=BB547960UD875) guys. I picked up one of these sap Alum blocks and have been very happy with it. For $3 it can't be beat. While you're at it, it'd be worth picking up a couple of tubes of the Arko shave cream.

Or just go to any drugstore or health food store and buy a crystal stick natural deodorant which is ammonium alum, and works the same. I actually prefer this to my AOS alum block because it is easier to use, and easier to travel with.

I actually tried buying alum blocks at the local drug store and they had never heard of it. Makes you wonder.

i went to Rite Aid and Walgreens to see what they had. Rite aid had a cheap boar brush and one brand of shave soap and walgreens had nothing. I will just wait until i need to replenish my razor supply and order some alum at the same time. thanks for the suggestions guys

That's the lowest price I've seen for an alum bar 2.99 !

I don't know how much truth there is to it, but the Shavex guy always claims that his alum bars are "potash alum", which could be a different material.

Mama Bear sells the Shavex alum bars individually I believe.

crystal stick natural deodorant = GIDDY UP

I agree this is the best way to go. A much better buy...it's easier to use...rounded end instead of a square....shaped like a super-duper lipstick tube. The one I have has a screw on cap so perfect if you travel.
