I recently ordered a Merkur HD razor with an on-line vendor and the vendor just contacted me to tell me they are out of stock (inventory screw up) of the razor I ordered, but in it's place they have the gold plated Merkur HD.

They are willing to ship me the gold for the same price, but my question is how well does the gold plating last on these? I've never had a gold plated razor so I don't know, just curious as I know most soaps are mildy caustic and wonder if over time it will wear away the gold plating?

I don't believe the Merkurs are actually plated with Gold. I believe they use a more durable yellow metal.

I'm not sure about the lasting quality of the new merkur gold tone razors, but I do commend the vendor for offering to send you one for the same price as the silver version. They cost a little bit more than the silver versions at all of the vendors that I have viewed.

I've been using one for about 1+ yr with no signs of wear yet. I rotate it with my straights and my slant so mayhbe about 1-2 times of use a week. It's my avatar...:)

I have a golden HD. All I ever do is rinse it with a sprinkler and the top head or handle stay clean. A small soap residue haze remains underneath the guard since the surface there is not polished as well.

I would imagine the coating lasting unless you dont start to use some polishing chemicals, very well.
