Let's see your goodies for the week.

I'll start off - I picked up a big bottle of Aqua Velva original yesterday.

Nothing special, but I've finally graduated from the little bottles to the big one - now I just need to find a big bottle of the green original sport and I'll be set for a couple of weeks!

My order from Shaving Essentials.
Booster sample pack
Speick cream
Provence Sante Green Tea AS
Merkur 39C Barber Pole Slant

John threw in a free pack of Derby blades for the razor, and samples of Wesley and Scott lime ASB, Cremo cream, and Trumper's sandalwood cream, along with a hand written thank you note. This is the second time I've ordered from him, and his customer service is nothing short of amazing. Thank you John!

Nothing too spectacular to report, but I just got this Argentine Tech (A-3) in the mail from dBay.

UPS also dropped-off my Tabac, which I've been curious about since joining. The first test, the scent, has been passed.

So for the last half of 2008 I was using some very nice, in my estimation, razors. But while I was taking things slow and not getting too carried away, I decided to start some other projects and those projects have basically all seen fruition around the same time. In the last month to six weeks I have four new and restored razors. And they are my rotation. The others are gone because these are here to stay. My 2009 razor aquisitions:

1. Dovo #41 rescaled in Japanese Horsechestnut.

2. Bill Ellis Hybrid in Redheart.

It was custom built at that time, but she has added it to the website. But you still need to specify if you want the vertical, horizontal or both ridges. Yes the second bowl is a replication of the bowl in the scuttle. But I think it maybe a little larger than the one in the scuttle - since they are handmade.

Very Nice! I just ordered a custom oversized scuttle (about 1.5X standard size) from Julie a couple of days ago. I am anxiously counting the days.

I know exactly what you mean. I don't store it on that shelf, only put it there to take the pics.

OMG I have a 38c, now I have to get the scuttle to match! I absolutely love that thing, its nice! Can you tell me how much it cost you? If you don't mind.

I agree with you! You NEED to order one asap! It was $65 + $17 shipping for the scuttle and $16 + $4 shipping for the extra bowl. So total of $102. Now hurry. Shipping was a bit expensive but it's fragile.

ah, dammit.

Facts:

I read somewhere on here about the possibility/likelihood that Penhaligon's has changed or will be changing its shaving soap formulations to non-tallow...

I have old-form Blenheim Bouquet in the bowl; I have a puck of old-form English Fern, but no bowl.

I read somewhere on here that D R Harris Arlington is hot stuff indeed, and not always available in the "mahogany effect" bowl and, being tallow-based, may follow the herd [haha] into vegetable based formulation.

I have no D R Harris Arlington of any form, no mahogany bowl.

I realize that at my current rate of use, I will, in approximately 9 years, run out of both Pen's soaps - who can even imagine what formulae they will be in 9 years, and will the wooden bowl for English Fern even still be available in 9 years? (And who knows what the future state of D R Harris, tallow-based, in mahogany bowls????)

I read somewhere on here that Vintage Blades LLC has Penhaligon's - old form, both pucks & in bowls and also has D R Harris Arlington in mahogany, in tallow.

I confirm with Jim at Vintage Blades that yes, he has Penhaligon's old formula, both in bowls and puck. Ditto D R Harris Arlington in mahogany bowl.

Yes, of course. No surprise:
I order a puck of Blenheim Bouquet for long term backup; I order English Fern in the bowl, because - duh - I don't have one, and also for long term backup. I order D R Harris Arlington in the mahogany bowl... just because.

They got here today, and they are very nice. I am set for the next 19 years in Penhaligon shaving soap-wise.

D R Harris smells very nice; the mahogany bowl is handsome indeed. I will try it tomorrow.

It occurs to me that this is really not my fault. Somewhere on here (yes, B&B is now "here") there's a guy who said he has five or six or so English Fern/BB pucks... so that he will survive the re-formulation.

It is not my fault.

You all here are enablers.

I am suggestible.

This is not good.

Yea, so I thought I'd be saving money by going DE... Thanks B&B!

You guys are killing me; I've also got two Techs in the mail as I type this!

From left to right:

VDH Deluxe soap
Williams soap
Omega soap
Parker 89R
Ustura "Shavette"
Merkur 34C HD
'72 Gillette Super Speed
Omega Boar Brush
ssilcox acrylic stand
Aqua Velva Musk AS
Aqua Velva Classic AS
C.O. Bigelow AS Balm
Chaps AS Splash
Pinaud Clubman AS

I also blame that Ustura shavette for starting it in the first place; It's the gift from SWMBO that made me finally take the plunge. (I'm still trying to master that thing...)

Seriously though, I love this stuff... It really is awesome having variety, versus my previous "den" that consisted of a M3 and Barbasol! And the amusing thing is, I can still see myself saving money now that I'm not buying cartridges anymore! I still have a ton of sample blades to go through and I just scored 100 Derbys on Amazon for $7.00 today. I'll be set for a year!

I see a lot of guys say that; "Hey! I thought this was supposed to be inexpensive!"

It's actually a reasonable complaint. Looking at the modern offerings and gagging at the price, you looked elsewhere, found a whole new world of what looked to be better, less expensive options, and BANG! You're a collector!

I understand, but for the people who say DE shaving isn't cheaper or a money saver, I postulate this; no one is in a better position for getting good, clean shaves in a massive economic downfall like we are.

Most of us have a couple of years worth of blades and soaps, and in a pinch, we can lather a bar of Dial or Yardley's bath soap. We can stop buying, either by choice of financial need, and still shave quite contentedly.
It's comforting to know that should things really get bad out there, we have that one thing fairly well covered.

BTW, a flask bottle of Chaps?! That rules! I'm hearing 80's music just looking at that thing!

I have two of those. And just a warning they are NOT good with water. I used the first one to soak my brush in while I strop. And the coating, whatever it is, started flaking off. Also the water eventually seeped into the wood and it cracks up whenever it soaks water now.

It might hold up when you just use it with the little water that's in lather though.
But eventually I think the coating will flake anyway and it might mix with your lather. Use the other one as a soap dish now and it is holding up fine for that.
I don't have the cord to connect my cell to my PC so I can't take pictures of it unfortunately.

Ikea can be quite expensive but there are also some hidden gems in there as well. this looks like a great find!!

Just saw this post. Here in Denmark IKEA has a reputation for being, at the very least, reasonably priced. It's where students or others who have recently moved away from their parents go to stock up on household stuff.

So for some time I have been useing a cereal bowl to build lather in. It really was perfectly shaped inside for this, but had no handle. I have been in the market for a soup mug of some sort for a while now and bug SWMBO about it everytime we go into a store that has this sort of thing. Alas, no one had what I was looking for, until I went into Pier1 the other day. I found a mug with the right dimensions for my tastes and it was only 6 bucks! Attached are a few pictures...:thumbup1:

I went with the EJ version in black as compared to the DR Harris pictured in the thread because of the lack of any markings on the handle, simple and classy. In the first picture of the original thread you can see the Harris name and followed by some more info about the company. Just did not care for all that crap on my razor. Two razors. First and foremost a Rolls in excellent condition. It is in a leather case, has an extra blade and the hone and strop are used but not abused.

Second is a strange beast I have seen pictures of but never before seen in person. It says SEGAL on the bottom of the guard. I picked it up for $8.00. I am somewhat disappointed because I thought it would somehow take a standard DE blade but either I am really dense or it just can't be done.

It is my second brush and I just had to tell someone, that way when it comes and my wife tells me that I did not tell her I can act confussed and say " well I told someone I can't remember". And yes confussed is normal for me. I wanted the small to try to creat a travel setup hope it works. I read where a member took a rx bottle and made a tube since they come in different sizes. I missed a Omega on ebay that went for $15 because of basketball, I know I failed, but then got BAD. That's brush acquisition desorder, and went looking, Penworks is a cool place!

Nothing beats the old fashioned World War II version....but thats a nice score too!

I don't know. I had the regular version for many years. True, for looks the leather is hard to beat and the look is classic. It does the job, but its basically just a sack. And leather around water can go south pretty easily. (For active duty, you're absolutely right. I'd have hated to carry the new style on any forced march. But then again, that's one of the few nice things about not being on active duty anymore.)

A friend gave me the updated Dopps a couple years ago (like this one) and every time I use it I reflect on how much more convenient it is. It holds all of my personal hygiene gear in one place, that I can hang from the shower rod, door frame, or a nearby tree.

No, its not leather. But then again, I'm not trying to impress anyone in the bathroom (except SWMBO, and I've got her fooled ).

This one does look like a nice score. I'm guessing that you will continue to appreciate it as you use it. Enjoy!

I've been looking for a complete Gillette Tech travel set for quite some time now. I've found case and razor together many times in local antique stores, but everything else is always missing(nail clippers, file, scissors, tweezers, and a small knife).
I saw one on the bay yesterday and put in a low ball bid to test the waters and took it today. It still has the paper razor place holder and the tape around the knife. I was so excited that I laughed a little and SWMBO asked what my deal was. I showed her and she still didn't get it. But it doesn't matter, because I know that you guys probably do. The thrill of victory, even without opposition, is still awesome.

I picked up a cased Gold Tech at an antique mall this weekend. It needs a good cleaning, but I think we can handle that. Also in the case is a single blade wrapped in paper that says Probak Junior Blade, Product of Gillette Safety Razor Company. I haven't seen the Probak name before. How does the Gold tech shave? This is the open comb TTO Gold Tech, not a gold colored tech. Was $9.20 a decent price for this?

I've been curious about the Rolls Razor since the 60s, when I saw one that belonged to a college friend. It looked mystifying. This curiosity and interest has been stoked by the recent B&B Rolls thread. This evening I scored what seems to be a very clean Rolls Viscount. It may not be as well made as earlier models (or perhaps it is) but I went for clean, and thus, hopefully, usable.

It really caught my eye, especially since Ive been using techs more often these days. I swear the shaves are just so fast, easy and smooth with the techs. Not as close as my old types but the ease of use and enjoyability make up for it big time.

Ive been using a 60's aluminum handled tech and I love the shaves but man I wish it had fatter handle but yet maintained its light weight. Then I found this razor and I had to have it, looks like the prefect solution.

I have one of their lower-end Badgers, and I like it quite a bit.

I can't say anything about Proraso though, as I'm not a menthol man.

Enjoy it and let us know how your new toys work. :thumbup1:

Cheers.

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Starfury, the menthol isn't too bad. It can have a cooling effect ... but, how things feel on your face (especially for a man who normally has tougher skin) is different for a girl whose shaving under her arms, her legs (mine are super-sensitive) or anywhere else. The downside is I tend to have to lather parts 2 or 3 times, because it starts to burn or feel itchy for me.

Again, still learning, still trying out things.

Thank you

It really caught my eye, especially since Ive been using techs more often these days. I swear the shaves are just so fast, easy and smooth with the techs. Not as close as my old types but the ease of use and enjoyability make up for it big time.

Ive been using a 60's aluminum handled tech and I love the shaves but man I wish it had fatter handle but yet maintained its light weight. Then I found this razor and I had to have it, looks like the prefect solution.

Well I'm going to keep an eye out for one.

That handle is awesome. I too am an avid Tech user. I don't recommend anyone do this, but I swear I can beat myself about the face and neck and not get cut using a Tech.

That thick handle would only make things better for an already superb razor.

Cheers.

Well for starters, let me apologize for not even looking at your avatar and realizing you were of the fairer sex.

Secondly, now that you mention it, I think Proraso would probably work quite well for your needs.

Nothing like a cooling effect on your legs and under your arms.

There are also some really nice lavender, rose, lime and other scented soaps and creams out there that you may want to take a gander at once you get settled in.

Cheers.

The thrill of victory, even without opposition, is still awesome.

Kyle;

The thrill of victory without opposition is how you get these things cheap!

Nice going man, enjoy you unopposed travel Tech. :thumbup1:

Cheers.

Nice looking HD Rocket. I have a couple of them and they are just about top of the heap IMHO. I love my slim and fatboy but the old British Gillettes take some beating

did you watch the auction close...? did your heart pound???

Nice score!

I refreshed about 10 times in the final minute. It was quite exciting.

The hard part of finding this one was that it's not the travel Tech. Those can be had all day; some still in the outer wrapper. This is the travel kit with the full sized Tech and all the trimmings in a case about the size of a small hardback book.

This beauty arrived at my doorstep today. I won it at an ebay auction. It came with a few old "Fuller Brush Co.", very rusted, blades. Those are new red pack Personna blades from my stock. The razor (no date code) looks to be barely used at all. The cleanup I did was almost not necessary.

Thanks Dustin, I am truly amazed that this razor looks practically brand new after all these years. The seller appeared to be someone that acquired it at an estate sale.
