 I appear to be coming down with a very expensive AD indeed.

Shoes.

No, not just shoes ... dress shoes ... not just any dress shoes either, the high quality ones from Northampton. Gulp.

Soo ... anyone out there share this passion ... and have a few photos of shoes to share for drooling? Let's see in whose footsteps I'll be walking!!

This was an excellent thread about B&Ber Hobbes' experience with an Oxford shoemaker:

Unfortunately, that will be all I can contribute. My dress shoes are Allen-Edmonds exclusively. C&J, EG, etc. are still a ways out of my price range.

Ahh, Loake, Trickers, Grenson, Church, Cheaney, Sargent, Lobb... I can smell the leather!

I have several pairs, mostly country brogues 'cos I like solid shoes! Out of the list above I have Loake, Trickers, Cheaney and Sargent. Trickers are my favourite brogue but Cheaney are my overall favourite from the list. Loake are my least favourite. Have to try to get you some photos. have to polish them first as they get well used and are not pampered!

Actually, a colleague and I are seriously considering having some custom shoes done up by a shoemaker in Toronto who makes bespoke shoes and has a very good reputation.

Love the English shoes.

I'm a fan of the sturdy brogue as well. I prefer Aldens though.

I have a great pair of Loake boots, as can be seen here (http://www.loake.co.uk/Shop/FileResources/Images/Products/main/290B.jpg).

Those shoes look amazing. I can only afford to buy Allen Edmonds.

Only AE? AE are not too shabby for a yank. At least I thought so anyway before I discovered this thread.

Chris, I too am looking for a custom shoe maker in Toronto for a pair of bespoke casual walking shoes. The only one I've come across so far is Nick's Custom Boots on Dupont St. in TO; is this the same guy?

I have five pairs of dress shoes and they're all Church's. I've worn Church's for over 20 years and love 'em.

Yes it is - have you heard anything/spoken to anyone about his shoes/quality?

I don't know anyone who has bought from him, but I remember reading some good comments about him on the Fedora Lounge.

I would love to contribute to this thread. However, my profession doesn't leave a lot of disposable income for the finer things in life.

I will however lurk here a little bit and just drool.

I like the look of that boot.

A favorite take on that type of boot/shoe is done by RM Williams. The Australians got it right with this one. Of course they are a rougher version, but something I get more wear out of. A lot more. And they are reasonably priced.

Ian, so what choices have you made? I broke down on some Aldens, C&Js may be next.

Yes I'm familiar with RM Williams boots, very nice they are. I'm actually from South Australia; I used to live around 10 minutes from their Salisbury factory shop.

I bought a pair a decade ago - it was a huge amount of money at the time, but worth every penny.

I've gone through a sole and three heels - the boots are still going strong.

Ian, so what choices have you made? I broke down on some Aldens, EJs may be next.

I started with a few pair from Charles Tyrwhitt (more and more of their shoes are made "elsewhere" and their prices have gone up a lot recently, but a few years ago they were a decent place to get entry-level English shoes.)

I've picked up a few pair of Brooks Brothers' "Peal & Co." shoes recently. These are made in England for BB by Alfred Sargent and Crockett & Jones (annoyingly the AS fit a bit smaller than the C&J so it's hart to know which size to order ...)

I have my eye on C&J's handgrade line ... :thumbup1:

When you go to Jermyn Street for your shaving supplies be sure to check out Trickers for shoes. Unbelievable old-fashioned shoe shop and unblievable bargains to be had in their sales in December and June

I'm pretty sure the brogued boots that Orvis sells (http://www.orvis.com/store/productchoice.aspx?pf_id=43CG&dir_id=885&group_id=909&cat_id=5109&subcat_id=6681&bhcp=1) are made by Tricker. They look just like the Tricker Stowe with Dainite sole (http://www.pediwear.co.uk/trickers/products/774.php) except for the particular leather finish used on the Orvis model.

I've recently acquired this addiction you speak of. i've been admiring the likes of John Lobb, Edward Green, C&J, Alfred Sargent, Trickers, etc. i'm still waiting to hear back from Pediwear about their discount offer, and then i'm buying myself a pair of C&J oxfords.
