I am a newbie and have gotten better and better shaves as my blades have improved. I first started out with my new DE using Personna blades from Wal-mart. I didn't notice much of an improvement from my Bic disposable that I had been using for many years. I then got the sample pack and started out with what they call "red pack Personnas." Not much of a difference between them and the Wal-mart Personnas. I then went to Crystals. Yes I did notice an improvement. Not overwhelming, but a marked improvement. I still wanted more. Today I used the Gillette 7 o'clock blades (made in Russia) and Bam . . . there it was, the shave I was looking for. No tugging . . smooth. No irritation. I just wanted to share my upward evolution in blades and see if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Don't forget to factor in your upward evolution in skill going on in parallel. Keep going as you are then go back and try one of the earlier blades and see if they have magically improved just sitting there in your cabinet!

I only use 7 O'clock Sharp Edge blades now. They are fantastic for me. YMMV.

They seem to be the only blade that will give me a close shave with my EJ razor. Decent blade.

Does anyone know where to get them cheaper? When I looked at them they were the second most expensive blades I could find next to the feathers. I still got a 5 pack to try with my starter kit as if those turn out to be the blades for me, then they are the blades for me (still cheaper than a mach 3!).

If by EJ you mean Edwin Jagger that is an amazing coincidence. My razor is an Edwin Jagger Chatsworth. I wonder if there is some engineering dynamic at work which makes the Gillette 7 O'clocks work so well in EJ razors.

The Russian 7am is one of my fav. It is so smooth, sometimes I can't tell is working.

Sigh. I wish posters would mention which 7 O'Clock blades they are talking about - it would make things easier.

- Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge, yellow packaging, made in Russia

- Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Stainless, green packaging, made in Russia

- Gillette 7 O'Clock Permasharp Stainless, green packaging, made in India

- Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum, black packaging made in India

The "7am Platinum" blades are not made by Gillette.

Now back to our regularly scheduled postings . . .

I'm talking about the first one on your list . . . the Gillette 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge Yellow packaging. Made in Russia.

I like the razor, but it only works well for me when I use super sharp blades, Like the 7 O'clock Yellows. Have not tried a Feather yet. I personally think it works so well with a sharp blades because it seems to be a less aggressive razor. What I really like about the EJ is that it is exceptionally easy to find and maintain proper blade angle.

+1

I never thought I would get a good shave out of a Merkur blade...

The Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge are my favorite. The only thing I dislike about them is they do not seem to last very long.

So, we're talking Yellow Box here, right? Where do you get them? I ordered a sampler of Blacks and Yellows from Singapore and never got them?

Are the Greens comparable or should I shoot for a Yellow source?

West Coast shaving has them either in quantities of 5 or 100.

As for those Merkur blades, what is it that people were saying about the edges of the blades being sharp?

You guys should just stop screwing around and use Feathers. You're going to end up there eventually.

I indeed screwed around with a Feather or two; you might say my face got knocked-up.

Up until this week, the "no-name" IP was my Gold Standard blade; as of now, that title goes to the Dorco ST-300. I think the 200 I just ordered (plus what's left of my IPs and Merkurs) should see me through just a bit past the middle of the next decade. (Just remembered: I also have four yellow-label 7 O'Clocks to use, and a new dispenser of Mystery Schicks. What fun.)

Anyone had a bad blade with the super stainless greens?
I tried one around the same time as I was trying BICs, wilkinsons, Kais and cromas.
The gillette green blade was great and easily the best out of all of them.
After that one blade I moved on o the next brands, gillette sharp yellows, derbys and back to feathers. This was about a month ago.

Three days ago I loaded up a new gillette green super stainless into my '61 SS for my razor and blade shoot-out, and found the new green terrible, the worst out of the lot. It dragged, couldn't cut at all. Even the derby was better and I rate that a blunt blade not capable of ATG passes.
It wasn't prep or angle, because I was actually shaving with 5 different razors and blades at the same time in the same way to compare them all together. So they all had the same conditions to work with.
I even tried the blade in a tech the next day to see if it was the razor, it was still awful so I threw the blade away.
So I'm just asking if anyone has heard of consistancy faults in these blades, as in a few duds? They aren't the cheapest and I won't buy them if there's a few bad blades in every pack.

It took five weeks for my Gillette Yellows and Blacks to get here! The seller apologized but it was a mail delivery problem.

BTW, the Yellow is the best blade I've tried in my limited experience. :w00t:

Not sure what others have said, but as one of the few people here who really like the Merkurs, my impression is that they are less sharp than e.g. Feathers or Gillettes, but they dull much less rapidly. I get 7 days of good shaves from a Merkur, but only 2-4 from the sharper Feathers or Gillettes (4 days from the Swedes, 2-3 days from the Indian black 7:00's). YMMV of course.

Love the Feather. My face can take it!
