View Full Version : Recommend a "modern"-scented soap for me

Hi all -
I don't even know if "modern" is the world I'm looking for. In the last few weeks, I've bought Provence Sante and Irisch Moos shave soaps, based on recs from these forums. While these soaps perform AMAZINGLY, for me the scents are too:
1)perfumey
2)flowery
3)old-school
I'm looking for a high-performing soap (on the level of these two) that is "cleaner" and doesn't smell like cologne was added to it. For example, I love the smell of Nancy Boy's two shave creams (with scents like mint, cucumber, rosemary). I also like citrus. I liked the smell of a Bay Rum and Peppercorns soap sample I got, but wasn't impressed with the soap itself. Maybe I'm just into food scents. I ordered Harris Arlington recently and am hoping that is the ticket.
Pricewise, I'm hoping to max out around the price of Harris (~16 for a refill).
Does this make sense? One day, we'll be able to smell things through the interweb and this will be a lot easier.
Thanks.

For some of the best scented creams or soaps on the market consider Edwin Jagger. Sandalwood, Sea Buckthorn and Aloe are all mind blowing off the charts scents

Harris Arlingon is a great citrus scent and a great performing soap. It might be a bit on the old school side. I would also recommend checking out QED Lime.

You may want to try Mama Bear's Hydrogen soap.

Head over to mama bear's site and read some of the descriptions of her soaps. I've found them to be pretty accurate and helpful. She has so many scents that you can't go wrong. If you like rosemary and mint, her rosemary mint EO soap is fantastic. I also really like her spicey lime and the pepperberry. Read the descriptions to see if they are something you might like. The spicey lime is kind of sweet smelling. It actually reminds me of the smell of gummi coke bottles, if that makes sense, lol. Pepperberry is very complex smelling, it has a nice spicey smell to it, but also kind of fruity.
Also, if you like citrus, honey bee spas Yuzu soap is good! Japanese grapefruit.

+1 on trying mama bear. Lots to choose from and they perform well for me. Gentlemans Lemon might fit the bill.

+1 to Pre de Provence, and Edwin Jagger? I tried the creams. If the soaps are anywhere near these creams (and soaps to me are usually better) Sea Buckthorn from EJ would be a winner!

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go with one of the QEDs (lime, peppermint & tangerine, grapefruit & peppermint, or bergamot -does anyone has a recommendation between those four?) followed by the EJ sea buckthorn if I'm still looking.
Thanks again. This place never fails to impress.

TGQ Desert Ironwood or Leatherneck. HIGHLY recommended and Colleen's service is top tier!
That Arlington may be the ticket for you. Also consider the almond scented soap, if that is of interest to you.

T&H Luxury soap might prove to be up to the task. It has a very clean fresh scent and perhaps you'd enjoy it.

...or save a few bucks and get the Vintage Blades house brand soap. Several of us feel it is the exact same thing as T&H.

MWF Smells very light and clean to me. It is one of the finest choices out there. Have you ever tried it?

Thanks again, all.
I ordered the sampler pack from TGQ with Desert Ironwood, Highlander, Bay Rum w Sweet Orange, Cavendish Black, and Savon de Comte.
If there are other suggestions, please keep them coming.
By the way, I should have mentioned that my cologne of choice is Varvatos Vintage, if that provides any insight into my scent preferences.
Thanks.

You said you're looking for performance and you like citrus? eShave Mandarin is the goods! You won't be disappointed. Light mandarin orange fragrance and performs like Pre de Provence. Amazing.
dermstore (online) sells it, with free shipping even.

I saw on a post somewhere that Shaving Essentials may be carrying it but its not on their website. I would love for someone in the states to carry it and its seems really bizarre that no one does.
The only places I know are:
The English Shaving Co. (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/) - England; &
Fendrihan (http://www.fendrihan.com/index.php) - Canada; &
Rasage Poulin (http://www.rasagepoulin.com/index.html) - Canada.

I'm looking for a light, clean, crisp, modern scent that's not too sweet but would like a shave soap and an aftershave balm, suggestions? Also, not too oily or heavy since I'll be wearing this during the spring and summer.

DR Harris Arlington Soap and Provence Sante Green Tea aftershave. Not a balm but light and moisturizing with shea butter and no alcohol. Shavingessentials.net John carries a lot of stuff that's not on his website. Give him a call or email if you want something but don't see it on his site. (he also has EJ Sea Buckthorn coming in soon).

My quest is over. Done.
Harris Arlington.
If I never use another quality shave soap in my life, I'll be okay. The scent is just a touch more perfumey than I like, but it doesn't matter.
The shave is just that good. Slick, moisturizing, and no razor burn.

John from Shaving Essentials is sending me samples of the DRH Arlington and IK. It would be great if he could begin selling the EJ Soaps and Creams. I ordered the EJ Sea Buckhorn in travel size from English Shaving Co when I ordered a EJ BBB travel brush. Good to know that John carries stuff that's not on his website.
I presently use Provence Sante soap as my everyday shave soap but its the verlain, not the green tea. Too bad they don't make a green tea shave soap.

-MPre de Provence comes right to my mind for me too. Arlington's nice as well. QED-wise I have the sandalwood shavestick and think it smells fabulous (not sure if that's what you want though).
Another not sure if that's what you want suggestion - MWF?
It's a creamy fresh kind of scent to me -- fairly subtle - but I think it smells quite nice.
