Has anyone purchased a knot from goldennib and made their own brush? I am wondering on the quality of the silvertip and knot in general. I tried searching but found nothing.

From what others have said, they fall somewhere between the Edwin Jagger Best, and Super.
Regardless, it is the ONLY place you can get knots, besides penworks(i think)
I just ordered my 22mm silvertip to stuff into a mint condition Ever-ready brush.

I've recently bought an 18mm, a 20mm, and a 22mm Silvertip from Tony at the Golden Nib. Tony's customer service is great!
I restored some cool vintage handles and have been using them for the past 2 weeks. I got a little shedding from each knot the first couple of times but the shedding seems to be non-existant now.

I may be wrong, but I'm thinking penworks is the wholesale side of The Golden Nib?
I'm not 100% sure.

Which knot size do you like best? I have a c+e pure badger brush currently, I want something different enough that I enjoy it more :D

I don't think there's that much of a distinction - they are both run by the same guy (who is exceedingly responsive in my experience)

Tony's knots all have a buld shaped loft like Shavemac brushes. I like 20mm but I was limilted to what my handles would accept.

Why not go for the MONSTER 28mm knot?
at less than 30 bucks, no reason not to try it, especially if you are turning your own handle.

I I have ordered a 24mm and 26mm in silvertip. There was a big difference in the softness between the two. The 24 is very nice and dense. I prefer it to any other brush I have owned for the price (rooney, vulvix, omega & EJ). Not as soft as the rooney, nor as dense, but holds more lather.
The 26 was not silvertip, it was more like super badger hair. It was also dense and has not lost hair, just not as soft as the 24. And BTW it's a HUGE knot, I mean HUGE! I could not imagine trying to use the 28 and not make a huge mess....
Shipping was fast, great communication and very good product for the price.
Finally, I have found one other vendor on the bay that sells Silvertip knots (24MM). Don't recall the name, I did a search for "silvertip & badger & knot", at it comes up. These brushes are softer than the Nib brushes, but not as dense. On the floppy side, but exremely soft!

The golden nib is not the only place.A site called Blankity Blanks also sells badger knots. More expensive? yes. Better quailty? dunno. They look like the same product.

I have a Made Rite brush that was re-knotted with a Silvertip knot from the Golden Nib and it is a great brush. It shed a few more hairs than a high end buy in the beginning, but not so many as to be a problem. It's a monster with creams. I also have a pair of Knotty Badger Brushes on their way. Both have knots from the Golden Nib, one in Best and one in Silvertip. If they are as nice as the knot in my Made Rite I will definitely be one happy customer.

Unless Blankity Blanks got some different knots, his silver tip aren't as full, they're floppier and they're more expensive.
Also you have to call in your order, sometimes you get a recording.
They do have some really nice turning blanks and David Borek is a Master Turner who likes to talk about turning, hell he likes to talk period

Guys, I'm just about ready to re-knot my first brush. I like a fan-shaped knot more than a bulb-shaped knot, any tips on which to order?
Penworks

Just to clairify this statement, Penworks is my B&B sign on, also the name of my retail store in Carefree, AZ and retail web site. www.thegoldennib.com is my wholesale site for products I wholesale to wood turners and do-it-yourselfers. I am a one man band running around unshaven most of the time  trying to keep all 3 going plus finding time to turn in the studio  "Thats the rest of the story" PH we will miss you.

Ordered on Monday, received it on Wednesday (I am in Massachusetts), installed in my grandfather's old handle that night. Shaved this morning and it is fantastic. Tony was great, the knot is great, what more could I ask for. I will let you know how it holds up.

Just set a 24mm silvertip from Tony in a vintage handle this afternoon. Test lathering and report tomorrow afternoon after the epoxy cures.
+1 on the great service. Ordered Tuesday night, came with today's mail.

Speaking from my personal experiences, Tony at Golden Nib is the best. I have restored 5 old brushes, using Best, Finest, and Silvertip. All five brushes, so far, are in daily use by 3 guys, including me. They do not shed. I've got brushes from Kent and Omega also, and of all, they've lost the most, which is to say maybe 4 or 6 bristles each, while Tony's badger knots are in the range of 0 to 1 lost bristles over the same period of time, a few months. The Finest is an awesome big brush that I use with soap or cream, in rotation with my Kent BK4, and it has not shed one bristle. I've got a matching pair of black and white Ever Ready 150's that are next in line, while I continue to go over Tony's wide variety of knots trying to decide which knots to use, now that he's got such a wide variety of knots to choose from. I can tell you that Tony is a good communicator with his customers. He responds to any inquiry in a timely manner, and he ships orders fast. The website is easy to negotiate, the shopping cart works, and the prices are certainly fair and reasonable. I do not hesitate to recommend this vendor.

I used my 22mm silvertip for the 5th time last night, with Williams Mug soap of all things (superlathered with a bit of honey mango from trader joes)
Whipped up great lather, very slick, the brush kept loaded enough for 3 passes.
Mine is set in what was a NOS ever-ready 200T brush handle.

Does anyone have experience with their synthetic knot? I'm interested in either making my own handle or buying a vintage brush on eBay and putting a synthetic knot in it.
I think a synthetic knot on a hand-made (Carved or turned) acrylic or maybe even ceramic handle would be stunning.

In case anyone is interested, I broke down and ordered one of the new UK knots. The 23mm silvertip. The thing sure is soft, but I can see how it might be a bit floppy as well. Going to set it a little deeper in the handle - we'll see how it goes. I'll post some pics when complete.

50MM or less, or you will end up with a floppy brush. I also ordered a 23MM Super, waiting for my vintage handle to come in to install. I'll post a photo.

I read on a straight razor forum that Tony has confirmed these are Vulfix knots - can anyone corroborate?

I saw Tony's post on SRP as well, Vulfix knots indeed.

So I set the knot last night. lax1mxr was completely right. I actually set it to 55mm - and it is still a bit floppy. But for me it is a nice compromise. The tips are super soft, and it is a nice rounded brush. Should plow through cream or soap. Overall, I am happy with the knot.

So which one is the best knot? I know its YMMV, but whats the difference between finest and silvertips from tony?

03-27-2009, 08:36 AM
I have a 22mm finest, a 26mm silvertip and the 23mm UK (vulfix) silvertip. While the 23mm silvertip is pretty soft... the 26mm was a friggin bargain. Next time I order, I think I'll go with the 24mm silvertip. The 26 is a mop - just a bit too large for me - and it sheds quite a bit. I've heard that the 24mm doesnt have the same shedding issues.

I set a 22mm silvertip knot in an old drugstore Surrey boar handle the other day. My first shave was not too pleasant--it still smelled extremely badgery and it shed like crazy. Dozens of bristles. I shampooed it a couple of times to get the wild scent out and let it rest for a day.
Today I used it with Godrej Menthol Mist cream and had a fantastic four-pass shave. As far as I can tell, it didn't lose a bristle and it looks gigantic. It's a great brush and I couldn't be happier with it. It's also kind of nice to see the repurposed old handle that has spent the better part of the last ten years in a box back in use again. Thank you Golden Nib!

I have 2 Golden Nib knots (22mm and 24mm) in my rotation. Both are "Finest" grade and both will hold their own against any of my other spendier brushes. I put them in a couple of vintage Ever-Ready handles. SOTDs for reference:
