Two EJ razors from TESC. I like the fat handled Georgian so much I'm sending the Chatsworth back and getting another Georgian. :thumbup1:

I had a very productive week of antiquing.

I found a pair of New Improved in cases, one a Bostonian and one New Standard; An Old Type travel, an Old Type in a case, a German Slim Twist with a black handle, and an English Aristocrat Jr. The New Standard also had the blade bank, with a selection of (ugh) used blue blades ranging in date from 1933 to 1967.

Very small (~3mm) cracks in the barrel near the head in the New Improved and the long-handled old type, all of which were made in Canada.

I also picked up a Rubber-Set shaving brush that I am in the process of rebristling.

I passed on an old Gillette in a Bakelite case, but as was pointed out to me 'how many razors does one man really need?'

I went to an antique store with my girlfriend yesterday, hoping to find some nice vintage DE or SE razors. I didn't find any Gillettes or GEMs, but I did come across something somewhat unusual. It's a Rolls Razor, the hone is broken and the strop is dented, but otherwise it's in pretty good shape. I figured it was pretty cool to have even if it's not shave-worthy. I only paid $25 for it, seemed fair for the condition it's in.

The model you have looks like a "Viscount." $25 is about the right price for it. I paid $40 for mine, but it included a hinged, velvet box and lots of documentation.

The main thing is that all the pieces are there. The strop looks like it can be re-conditioned, the hone looks like it might have enough usable length on one of the three pieces that you can get decent use out of it.

I have one that is similarly cracked, down the middle. I haven't had time to play with it, but I did put some lanolin on the strop a few weeks ago to see if would come back to life.

I wish there were somebody, somewhere that specializes in reconditioning these wonderful toys ... there are certainly a lot of people that have a Rolls Razor in the closet that would love to be able to use them.

I almost grabbed one of these a couple weeks back. 1 antique score had three of these, one of which was as close to perfect as I've seen. No box, but the hone, strop, and blade were all mark free. Strop was dry, but the whole kit had zero signs of use. It was marked $22. I guess I should have snagged it. Maybe it will still be there next time I go there.

Finally, I've slowed a great deal as of late. I've become much more selective these days. I've been looking for this one for a long time. It was made right here in my home town between 1880 and 1896. They made both this str8 and a Crescent SE razor set. This one needs a bunch of work but these Ivory scales are so sweet. I think it will clean up real nice.

+1 lets see the before and after shots!

They did really polish up nice. The Old Type case, in particular, just looked like an ugly black pile of tin metal until the polish started to show the silver plate. It wouldn't surprise me if it had never been polished before.

Unfortunately, I was in such a hurry to see what they would look like cleaned up that I neglected to take any before photos. They would have been quite disgusting, though - the New Standards still had a loaded blade, with lots of fossilized soap scum with embedded whiskers clogging the combs. My wife was hesitant to even look at them, and touching them was out of the question.

Now that they have been cleaned, she commented on how nice the New Improved looks. I think I may be winning her over!

I picked up a lot on the bay. 1 Valet Auto-strop, cased, missing all associated hardware. 1 B-2 Tech, loaded with a Gillette Slim blade and covered with 50 years worth of funk. Once cleaned it was in near perfect condition, just 1 area of rust from the blade 1 couldn't remove. 1 cased Red Tip C-1 loaded with a Gillette slim as well and 50 years of funk as well. Scrubbing bubbles, lead the way to a beautiful example of a Red Tip. Case has price tag of $.70 and is dated 1/59. Trying to figure out to remove what looks like nicotine stains on case without destroying the price tag. Not bad for a $20 lot.

I just acquired an argentinean or brazilian made tech still in its blister.

Can anyone place a date on this?

I also acquired an aluminum handle mexican tech in great condition I think its a 60's. I can post a pic of that one later

I understood that these techs are a bit more rare. Is that true ?

Either way they shave amazing. Im starting to fall in love and leaving my old types behind.

yeah, its doing better than I thought. this is at 400 grit. ill take it all the way up to 2000 then give it a bit of a polish. not all the pitting will be out, but I dont want to take away too much metal.

who needs a dremel when you have elbow grease and time to burn!

(the begall on the other hand has masses of pitting. maybe I should go after a dremel)

A short while back I was needling a member about having two of the same razor. I jokingly asked him why he needed two of these wonderful pieces of Gillette craftsmanship and history, when some of us didn't even have one.

Well, this proves what a superb forum this really is. Shortly afterward, said member sent me a private message. He hadn't really meant to get both razors; he had bid on two and had simply won both auctions- something he hadn't planned on. Well, to make a long story short, he offered one to me. The one in the best condition. Needless to say I jumped at the chance, having wanted one of these guys ever since I found out they existed.

Obviously this isn't a mint or faultless specimen, but I am extremely happy to actually own one now. And I really can't wait to use it. Funny that I am getting this before acquiring a standard Fatboy.

Oh...and the member was Slage...or was is RockerSlagg?

Oh I remember...SlagleRock.

You are the best Rob. This puppy traveled a long way from Japan to my door here in PA. I cannot tell you how proud I am to be a member of a forum with members as thoughtful, selfless and generous as you are.

Cheers my friend.

I'm glad it made the long trek safely. It is a great razor. I love mine and won't ever part with the one I have left even if someday I find one NOS!

very very nice - I guess I'd take one of those w/out a case, too!

I usually fail at this. I want to buy Penhaligon's BB AS next. Thats $85 bucks

I may get flamed here, but if you boil it, you will remove the rest of the lacquer on the razor (darker red areas). This will give the razor a more uniform color/finish. I did it to an Aristocrat I used to have. The razor look far better without the spots of lacquer.

Here was the results (it looked like your toggle when I got it):

Picked this up several weeks ago at a local antique store for $5. Rates in excellent/fine condition even though the pictures make it look worse than it really is. There's still one blade left in the box too.

I know next to nothing about Gems so how'd I do? Also, I've never used a Gem so I've been going back and forth on using this guy. Would people use it or just set it on a shelf?

Experts, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I shaved with it today and I was in Shaving Heaven. This may have been my best shave ever. Red Personna, Conk Amber Soap, CE BBB, Alum Block, Dickinson's Blue Label Witch Hazel, and Kiehl's Facial Fuel Energizing Moisture Treatment for Men.

Been rotating my Gold Tone Gem Junior with a 1912 Ever-Ready.

Other razors are having a tough time cracking the lineup at the moment -

The shaves are comfortable, close, long lasting and also (a negative?) quick. I'm done with the razor in under 5 minutes. No rush, just no need to repeat passes - something about the head geometry just works for me.

I agree with these posters - clean it up and use it.

I'm off to Bloom tomorrow to find some PAL blued steel blades....

i was in a salvage/damaged goods store in griffin georgia today.i picked up a VDH boar brush w/hunter green handle for $1.50,a lot of canned goods and spices.after checkout i saw a rack of aftershaves and perfumes and mentioned to my wifes step- mother that i would have to come back and pick up the gift pack of british sterling 2.5 oz a/s and cologne spray for $6.99.she picked it up and carried it over to her husband who was checking out had him buy it for me.and refused reimbursement.so i got a freebie.

My wife showed her undying love by buying me my own little armoire for my shave stuff. Not like I needed a reminder after 23 years of wedded bliss but yeah, she's a a keeper.

Jakob,
Sure I could do that. My lab has a good scanner. I'm assuming you want a pdf for print or something like that. PM me your email and I'll send you the file later this week.

I liked the friendly looking girl, too. As a plus, my girlfriend loves the ad
Cheers,
Ben

Nice commercial bennyJ82. Could you be persuaded into making a scan of it?

Regards.

I bought this in February, but it arrived today, so I'm showing it here.

I shaved with it today and I was in Shaving Heaven. This may have been my best shave ever.

I can't wait to try it again tomorrow!

They are absolutely superb shavers. Some find them aggressive, but I personally don't agree. To me they are both beautiful to behold and a joy to use.

The whole set looks very nice, including the case.

Cheers.

Today my wife and I went to Wimberly Market Days. This is what we found: a 1912, a Slim Adjustable (paid $3) and a Tuck-away. The Aristocrat and single-ring are ebay scores that came in the mail yesterday.

DL

Well done, very well done.

Some fine-looking specimens there for sure!

Cheers.

Supremely toasty looking Gold Tech. Already have a nice one but this one was too cherry and too cheap. And the case is sweet.

Sweet razor man.

I've been trying to get a cased Gold Tech for a while now. The one I won on eBay was freaking awesome, at least according to the pictures. Alas I never got it, it went into PayPal dispute (which they decided in my favor).

Great stuff, I hope you enjoy ogling it. :001_smile

Got some goodies from John at Shavingessentials:

Barbon SC
W&S Clove and Perppermint ASB

Tried the Barbon SC yesterday. That stuff just soaks up the water- keep it hydrated and the cream is nice. Light but fresh scent with dense cream. The ASB is an unreal kind of good. Had sampled the line and liked the balm so I just had to choose the scent- the clove peppermint is a winner in my book. Nice stuff.

But the real issues I have with the Shavingessentials are samples. Do I really need all those things? I mean, a very healthy offering of Trumper's Coral Skin Food, Trumper's Rose SC, W&S pre-shave oil AND Booster's Polar Ice. I do believe they are trying to get me into some trouble with my wife.

Thanks to the good folks at SE. Stellar transaction, as always.

Because I bought them to restore and then sell. Keeping the cream of the crop of course. Been pretty fun so far. Although my hands hurt so I think I'm going to stop for the next two days.

Lol, I'll send you the photobucket link to the album of the finished ones.

I hope I get over RAD soon (Seriously). I am really starting to believe I am crazy (I know several others have known that for a while now:lol:). If only I have one of every set, then I'd be fine:001_rolle
After you just outbid me again on yet another razor I wanted, I agree you should cancel your paypal account :001_smile

I do think you may need some help to get over this buying addiction, it's getting ridiculous.

Oh well, look on the bright side, you are saving me money :w00t:

Antique show came to town. Lots of DEs; most in pretty rough shape. Found a couple that were decent, though: J4 Slim Twist, and an J3 Slim Adjustable.

Picked up the BBB this week, too. Love it. Was using an Omega boar, and can't believe the difference in lather. Suhweet.

I bought a lot of Old Spice and ended up doing well. None was spoiled and the partial bottles were way more than half full as stated by the seller. For forty bucks shipped I got:

* Three Original Shulton aftershaves: Flying Cloud (partial), Telescope (partial) and a Brand new Old Spice Leather (with a Wallet!)
* Two Older glass P&G Aftershaves and a P&G Cologne.

I don't mind the newer P&G old spice. The bottles are \nice and the scent is decent albeit different from the original. The Shulton scent comes on a lot stronger than I generally prefer but the warming sensation is great. The Flying cloud flask is awesome in my bathroom, the Telescope I'll decant into the Cloud flask.

I know I'm a few weeks late, but I scored these at the beginning of March... the start of my first setup. Merkur 23C, Tweezerman, VDH glycerin, and a nice pendergrass bay lidded dish to keep the soap in, plus a glass mug. I've still got other weeks to post :P
