My son's 18th birthday is next month. Somehow, Gillette (or their marketing company) knew this and sent him a Fusion kit to get him started on expensive cartridges. Both my son and I wonder how they knew.

Does he have his drivers license? Has he ever signed up for any offers on line and given out his date of birth?
It reminds me of getting AARP solicitations six months before I hit 50.

I had to laugh when I read your response, I got my AARP invite when I hit 50 but my wife got her invite when she turned 45.........She wasn't a happy camper. Got to admit though they are on the ball and Gillette does have someone doing the same thing where the young guys are concerned!

They get you one of two ways- either through bought information from other companies, or when you register for the draft.
It's been happening to men since the thirties- don't sweat it.

Is he on FaceBook or MySpace. I strongly suspect that everything you post goes into one or more databases.
FaceBook just had a big controversy where they tried to claim the rights to all pictures posted out there. After the uproar, they retracted.
I'm very cautious about what I post out there and what personal information I give out. That is one of the reasons that I choose to remain anonymous on this site.
P.S. I didn't mean that I don't trust B&B. However, B&B posts come up in Google searches.

Yes, he is a member of Facebook. He has not yet registered for the draft.
I signed up for Facebook a couple of years ago, immediately before they had another user privacy squabble. I dropped my membership after less than a week.
Yes, I understand that every website I visit does as much as they can with what info they have on me. But when a site comes out and blatantly asserts that they own anything you post, I am out of there.

I got a free Gillette Mach 3 in the mail when I turned 18, and that was long before the internet was popular PERIOD, let alone MySpace and Facebook were around. ClubmanRob has the correct answer. You can easily purchase such information, or obtain a list of who has registered for the draft. I'm almost positive this is how they know.

Sometimes AARP gets it right and sometimes they don't. A friend just turned 50 and she hadn't gotten her solicitation. I started getting AARP mail when I was in my 11th year of being 39.

Most likely from you High School, according to my wife who is a teacher. Where I live, the libs don't want the schools to give info to military recruiters. You can request that the schools not give out contact info - but - where we live it's an all or nothing. So if you say no then the student will not even appear in the school directory.

I got one clearly marked as an 18th birthday gift from the Selective Service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_Service_System).
I don't recall seeing a checkbox labeled "Do not share my information for marketing purposes." :skep:

Actually Gillette knows because they've added Miss Cleo to their Marketing Team. She knows.

You have to think the free razor in the mail for the 18th birthday works extremely well - from a marketing perspective. It got Gillette 10 years of Sensor, Mach 3 and Fusion blade purchases out of me... Maybe B&B should send DE blades to all 16 year olds and DE shaving would really take off!

I got a Fusion razor sent to me as well, wasn't 18 when it got it though, I think I was 20 at the time. I didn't sign up for anything they just sent me one for some odd reason. I had purchased one when it came out because of all the hype, tried it for a few months and reverted back to my Mach 3 Turbo, the fusion just didnt feel right in my hands or against my face, it was also too flashy and colourful. They send them for a reason, the razor itself is cheap and if they can hook you on it, losing 5-10 bucks in the short run to get hundreds and thousands out of you in the long run for their outragously over priced cartridges. I shouldn't say too much because I overpay for Mach 3 Turbo cartridges:redface:

I never got a free mach3, my friend who was older did. I was upset that I had to buy my own razor. Oh well, I own 3 cartridge razors that are collecting dust. Anyone looking to up their blade count? I hear more blades means a better shave...:biggrin1: Some of them even vibrate!

There are marketing information companies that collect info on you from all sorts of places. Companies that you have a relationship with (e.g. your bank, frequent flyer programs, your grocery store, etc.) sell your name off to marketing companies. Whenever possible, I try to lie about this info. When they ask for my phone number at a a store I tell them a bogus number. I think you can add your name to a do not mail list from the direct marketing association. I did this a few years ago and stopped getting a lot of junk mail.

No idea. The same thing happened to me when I turned 16 but I got a Quattro in the mail. This was 10 years ago so no facebook or anything like that at the time. I wonder if there is something they get through the high schools themselves somehow.
I've received several unsolicited Schick and Gillette razors over the years, but I don't remember any of them being attached to a personal event. The last was a Fusion a couple of years ago, which I posted about here somewhere.

It seems to me to be based on Selective Service registration, as I have a disabled friend who was not required to registered and he didn't receive one. The rest of us did.

I got a free M3 when I turned either 16 or 18 (don't remember which). Facebook was not yet "in" and even then I thought myspace was sketchy, so I was not on either. It got Gillette a lot of business from me for quite a few years.
I suppose I still do about half of my shaving with a Gillette razor. It's just one that's older than my father.

Well, I have already said several times, he will still be 17 for another month and he has not yet registered with Selective Service.

The same thing happened to me, I got a sensor in the mail. Those were the pre-Internet days. I am assuming they got it through lists of graduating seniors from local high schools, DMV records, or draft registration.

I now have no idea why I got a Mach III on my birthday. Maybe the census? Now I'm curious again.

I got a fusion kit on my 18th birthday. It had the razor (obviously), a package of cartridges, and a small can of shaving gel. I used it a few times and went back to my mach 3. I ended up gaving the fusion to my dad. Now 3 three years later I buy a super speed and find out what a good shave really feels like.

Try it - if they claim you're not old enough there must be some sort of anti-age-discrimination legislation on your side... then when you get to 70 you might be the longest serving member and get an award too

I got the Razor Mail when I turned 18. Then a year later when I was a Sophomore in College the Marines sent me a letter saying "As you graduate high school,...". 3 other classmates in my town my age got the same letter. Apparently Gillette is receiving more accurate information than the Marine Recruiters.
