I just received these beauties in the mail.
They were almost black with tarnish but cleaned up nicely.
New Standard (Bostonian?) and a Tuckaway.
I shave my face and head with the Tuckaway and it shaves as good as it looks.

My only concern is how slippery the silver plating stays.
I've noticed on the brass NEW heads when they get tarnished they get less slick.

I would love to take a trip to Europe one day. I would especially like to go to Turkey since it was where my mother was born and raised.

1 Kent BLK4
1 Belgian blue 200x70 whetstone,
1 Belgian yellow coticule which turned out to be a natural combi with a bbw back! Whoo hoo! :w00t:

Came back into town a a little different way to check a shop I haven't been to in 4 months. The Twinplex Stropper is the frist of its kind I have seen. Patents say Dec. 11, 1917. As Dec. 11 is my Birthday it was mine. Any reason to buy, right? Always nice when I fine a Old Spice mug with soap included. The Old Spice Tankard Decanter is full and appears unused. The silver injector says PAL and has a dial adjustment. Nice Gillette with case. I don't know how practical the old style scuttle is but I liked the blue design. All in all, worth the stop.

Nicely done on the Yardley! is the container made of wood? it's one i've never seen before.

It is, though not a nicely turned wooden bowl, I believe it is very thin balsa that is bent in the form of a circle. Turned wooden bowl or not, this sure doesn't affect the quality of lather.

Ha, my pic in B&B...:w00t:

Josh, the 378 is a old traditional czech AS, not a german product. the smell is very old, a original.

The Tüff AS is a east-german (former GDR) product without scent and perfum. only herbs and alc. The Champaca is a old german AS from Mühlens, but its out of production for over 30 years.

If I'm not mistaken, that's Jean's soap/cream from My Time Bath & Body...Really good stuff, and you can custom pick the scent from her plethora of EOs and FOs. I have some freezy-cold Rosemary/Spearmint/Menthol that is out of this world.

Correct Royal, I used it this morning, the sent was light and you end up smelling like you've been cooking beef! Well maybe not that bad but you can really smell the Tallow. It was my first time with it; I thought I would go a week with it and do a review. Briefly it is very slick, and a good amount of protection but the lather falls apart fast. It could be the amount of water that I was using, but I had to add soap on each pass and whip up a new batch. But remember. It was the first try. On the other hand I'm sitting at work with a smooth BBS and did not have to add a moisturizer. So itís a good day!

It looks like you are on the right track

You need to replace the canned proraso with some english soaps (read D.R Harris), tabac, aftershaves etc...

JEEP
02-26-2009, 01:46 PM
The canned Proraso are samples, I haven't tried them yet - actually I have never (not even once) in my life used canned cream, when I started shaving my farther gave me a stick of Palmolive soap, a Wilkinson's brush and a M3.

As to soaps and creams - and aftershaves and colognes for that matter; my girlfriend is heavily allergic to pefume, so I'll have to stay with unscented or lightly scented products - the mentholated Proraso is luckily an exeption.

Just getting started with 'real shaving'. My new paraphernalia is beginning to show up. In the picutre: Barclay and Crocker bay rum sampler, Col. Conk shave mug and bay rum shave soap (all from barclayandcrocker.com). The razor is a 1926 H. Boker & Co. 'The King' I found on ebay. It has a small spot of tarnish near the tip well clear of the shaving edge. Otherwise, it is super clean, and it came shave ready...not bad for a first (I don't want anything super expensive yet).

In the mail:

Vulfix 660, small super badger - leesrzors.com
Miller Latigo Strop - thewellshavedgentleman.com
Dominica bay rum, Barclay AS (orange flavored) - barclayandcrocker.com
Kent shave soap - somewhere in England (ebay)

I absolutely cannot wait for everything to get here so I can give it a go!

ambrose

Yup an Old type, no shim just loaded with a feather.

My favorite shavers are old types. I get the perfect shaves with them I prefer them over the TTO types.

I have 2 bulldogs, 2 ball ends and a big fellow.

Have you ever shaved with one?
If not make sure the blade is exposed evenly on both sides. I usually tighten it almost all the way then adjust the blade. After its in place continue to tighten until its secured. Just make sure and not to over tighten though.

Okay, so last night I visited my Dad and tucked away in his basement I found a box of my old belongings from when I lived there. In this box I found the safety razor that he gave me when I was 14. I later identified the razor with help from this forum as a Gillette British Rocket Flare Tip circa 1955. In 1955, my Dad was 14 himself and his father had bought this for him. I spent an hour and cleaned it up. I now have my first DE razor with some significant family history - which at the time that I got it went completely unappreciated.

I have also placed an order this week from Fendrihan in Toronto for a Merkur 38C Barber Pole DE razor, a sampler pack of blades, a silvertip badger brush and some Mitchell's Wool Fat soap.

And so it begins ... and with much thanks to the fine people on this site!

Scored a 1953 President on ebay last week for $45 plus $5 shipping. It just showed up in the mail. My photographic skills suck so the photos don't really do it justice. The handle is nice and shiny with no plating loss or water spots. There are a few water spots on the silo doors and inside. No case, not mint, but still nice looking; I'm happy to finally have acquired a President for an affordable price. My nickel plated Gillettes look positively dull next to this guy.

I have a Tea Tree scented cream and don't smell anything but Tree Tree EO. As for the performance make sure you hydrate the cream for a bit (not sure if you face lather or not) and make sure you use enough product (it is pretty dense).

Hello gentlemen! Please excuse me if you don't recognize the name, I am a fairly quiet newbie to the forums but enjoy reading what all of you regular posters have to say. With that said, I happened to stumble across my first 'score' of my wet-shaving career not but a week or so ago.

While exploring a new shop in town, one that specializes in re-used and re-purposed items, I came across this guy, sitting in a box with some other junk... literally, junk.

It was marked $35. I just about started giggling, knowing full well as a former antiques collector that what I was looking at was worth way more, in its current condition, than $35.

Without further dawdling... first photo:
http://www.caseymhunt.com/images/razor/IMG_2645.JPG

What you are looking at is a Gillette Tuckaway. This one in particular is the NEW Nofolk with Bar Handle. I must say thank you VERY much to 'rodd' a fellow B&B poster who posted this thread (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?p=747835), which is the source of all my information. Thank you rodd, else, I would have no idea what I actually purchased.

The condition of the razor when I purchased it was pretty good though it had some oxidation present on all parts, most evidently on the handle where it clearly had sat for a long time.

What REALLY struck me was that it came in its original box, with its original linen case, housing the original metal travel case with original blade case. This thing is basically intact the way it was when it left the store in the '20s. THAT, alone, I believe, makes it worth way more than the 35 bucks I paid.

Some shots of the recondition, my first, by the way:

http://www.caseymhunt.com/images/razor/IMG_2648.JPG
http://www.caseymhunt.com/images/razor/IMG_2649.JPG

http://www.caseymhunt.com/images/razor/IMG_2661.JPG
http://www.caseymhunt.com/images/razor/IMG_2665.JPG

What I don't know, however, is how much this razor is actually worth. I realize 'worth' is relative, for I will never sell this gem, however, I am curious what the going price is of a razor in this series in this condition.

Thanks guys, for reading, and for checking out my first recondition and find. Appreciate any responses!

ALSO-- If you are interested in seeing a bigger photo gallery, here's a link to my Picasaweb photo gallery (http://picasaweb.google.com/casey.hunt/1920GilletteTuckawayRefurb).

Yes- I have had one shave with it so far. As I said I am quite the wet-shave newbie with only a few weeks and 2 blades under my belt...

I've been using a Classic Merkur closed comb- this Gillette seems a bit too aggressive for me, but I am going to try it again once I hone my skill a bit.

A British TV Rocket just arrived. I took a bit of a flier on this as condition was not evident in the photo I had to go on, but it is basically flawless. Had some soap on it so was used but zero in the way of signs of use once I cleaned it off. That Rhodium really does hold up well and it is shiny as all get out. The photos don't do it justice.

Been out of pocket the last few days. The tuckaway is in good shape from what I can tell, it does have a small dent in the left side of case. Some plate loss on the head. Haven't cleaned it yet but no cracks or damage that I can tell. Clearly it was someone's daily shaver as the the blade box has a few Schick Plus Platinum blades in it, one of which is clearly used, and the overall crud around the open comb. Not bad for $6.50 but will know better once I've got it clean.

Today's fine was a GEM Micromatic and two (2) Old Spice Lantern Decanters. The Decanter on the right has never been used and is full, the one on the left is empty. My pictures don't do the GEM justice the case is a deep dark brown with a walnut pattern. Has a piano hinge and is just beautiful.

There was a thread about them a couple of months ago. He's been working on a standard design, and the one I got looks a lot like some of the prototypes. I'm not sure if he ever decided on a standard, but he contacted me about this one since I had expressed an interest.

If I can find the thread, I'll post a link, otherwise just send him a PM and tell him what type razor you want to fit.

1946-47 Aristocrat - plating loss evident, but definitely shave-worthy.

1965 Slim Adjustable - if this hadn't had a blade in it when I found it, I would have assumed it had never been used. Really excellent condition!

And my personal favorite score --

D.R. Harris Marlborough Soap (disappointingly unfragranced)
D.R. Harris refill (FOC after an enquiry to their customer services, thank you DRH!) nicely fragranced.
DMT 8C lapping plate.
Belgian Blue Whetstone 200x70mm
Belgian Yellow Coticule selected bout, natural combi with bbw on the reverse!
Kent BLK4, wow! Works beautifully even on soap which was unexpected.
Mr Taylor aftershave balm, (liked it so much I got another).
Mr Taylor Aftershave. My face doesn't like it, burned me two days in a row so won't be using again unless I treat it like a cologne.

You're not going to replate them?

I only replate razors that need it.
While both of these razors have micro cracks in the tubing the plating is pristine, no scratches or brassing.
If either of them were showing a lot of brass I'd have them replated no problem.

I pretended to not be in any particular rush (while my heart seemingly 'bout burst out of my chest). Mailman was good all around - I received Provence Sante to day from a place called Touch of Europe (referenced here this week as having a special price on PS). I bought mine and they shipped very quickly. I was originally a bit put off by the cost of shippng but, given how fast it got here and how well the redware bowl was packed (bubble AND paper AND other stuff) - I'm competely OK.

Unfortunately, I'd already shaved for the day- have to wait until tomorrow to give this a try.

OK, this is one of those funny stories that you would never believe. Today I was in town to do some stocking up of my supplies. I went into a drugstore to get some new after shave balm. I wanted to try the Tabac Original After Shave Balm and while I was searching for it in the drugstore I found myself looking at a straight razor (in a franchised drugstor ) wrapped up in a cheap plastic case. I had a look at it and at first sight I didn't think very much of it, since it had some stains on them. After some further research I found out that I was able to rub those stains of with my finger. It was actually oil to preserve the blade.

Anyway, I looked at the make, which was Malteser. I had never heard about it, therefore I still didn't think very much of it; evenmore when I found some minor scratches on the scales. After cheching the price, I thought I would take my chances - it was 14.95 EUR!!! The person that helped me said it was something left over in stock from years ago, hence the clearance!

As my barber had advised me to try and find a cheap straight razor to practise honing with, I definitely convinced myself to buy it. So I came home with a (new) straight razor, even though I was just stocking up on some shaving supplies.

As curious as I am, I decided to look up information one the internet. So I 'googled': malteser razor and it came up with the site zamberg.com. After searching for half a minute I found the razor that just looked like mine:
Malteser 7/8 (http://www.zamberg.com/zb/wide-7-8-straight-razor-original-schulze-by-malteser-solingen-germany-10196i.ashx)
I compared it completely and even took measurements.... conclusion it is the same. I never looked at the price until that second... I bought this straight razor for 14.95 and its retail price happened to be 199 USD!!!

As I continued reading on the website I found out that the etching was made out of 24K Gold!!! I couldn't believe what I ws reading. So I checked over and over again...

After stropping, I also did a HHT and the razor happens to be very sharp as well!

Let me say no more...

Here are some pictures (sorry for the quality):

A bit like this --

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/bunchoffives/hdvsss.jpg

The finish on the HD and SS is similar, but the knurling seems more pronounced on the HD. I also appreciate the ring towards the head of the HD -- it's a small detail but adds just that much more class to the overall appearance. You'd have to hold both in your hands to really notice the difference. The SS seems puny comparatively. I'll find out soon how the actual shave compares.

I picked these up in SD, while on business, a Senator with a case, a Frankentech, a New head on a Fat Tech Handle with a red and black case, a Muschel straight, a Rubberset 200-3, a Christy w/ box and instructions, the Schick box contains 4 original blades and 6 Gillette blades, and the purple box contains 20 Valet and 3 Enders Blades. Enroute is a New handle to replace the tech handle, along with 3 SE's, 2 Gems and a Star Fat Man, and a box for my Gem lather catcher, thanks to Cooncat Bob .

Everyone here is dead wrong! Don't listen to them. Eight dollars is way too much money, hell,...eight pesos would be too much money! The better deal would have been if you had gotten it for free. Plain and simple but you still have a super nice razor there you'd better sleep with one eye open cuz theres a lot of good ol' boys here who'd love to take it! Warm lather to you!:tongue_sm

Heck, what do I know? I had a feeling the wooden case wasn't an original. My gut told me that because the razor handle didn't fit the whole length of the case. I really thought the razor in the wooden case was a ranger tech. You guys say it's a senator? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Regards, Nick

It was an antique store that I thought I cleaned out a month or two ago.

I guess it pays to check back once in a while.

I did score an extremely nice Fat Boy at a thrift store about four months ago. Cost me a whopping $1.

I'm kind of afraid to use it. It's so unique and cool looking, I don't want to risk messing it up.

Is the shave similar to a Fat Boy?

A bit like this --

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/bunchoffives/hdvsss.jpg

The finish on the HD and SS is similar, but the knurling seems more pronounced on the HD. I also appreciate the ring towards the head of the HD -- it's a small detail but adds just that much more class to the overall appearance. You'd have to hold both in your hands to really notice the difference. The SS seems puny comparatively. I'll find out soon how the actual shave compares.

Very nice bunchoffives. :thumbup1:

Now I'm going to have to puy my British HD to the test as well. I still have yet to use it as I'm leaning more towards 3-piece razors now.

Cheers.

To me $8 is a great deal on anything these days.

You certainly can't buy much gas (or petrol) for $8.

And you aren't going to get anything for $8 that is going to impress as many people here as that Chrome Toggle will. OK maybe an $8 bottom-dial I95.

The finest score for the money I've seen in quite some time my friend.

Cheers.

Here's what I got yesterday. The brush I just got finished with. The handle came from a ladies leg shaving brush retrofitted with a 26mm knot. The straight is a George Wostenholm suedo frameback. The de is a gillette travel razor date M-4 which is 1967 I think. Comes with a gold zippered case and I believe it is mint because it still has the cardboard insert in the head.

Welcome to the Blade.

So here are a few pics. I picked up the $2 Wal-Mart soap today solely for the purpose of having soap in the pics - and because strangely I now want to purchase all things shaving. The CR bag I use to hold a camera lens so I added it for dramatic effect.

Enjoy ...

Here was my treat, as of a week and a half ago:

http://mysite.verizon.net/bwbenton/Shaved!/Twogillettes.jpg

From a fellow B&B'er: 1972 Gillette Super Adjustable & late-40s Gillette Aristocrat, with a handful of Dorco and Gillette yellow 7 O'Clock blades thrown in. These are my first vintage Gillettes. I've been positively hooked on the Aristocrat/Dorco combination for the past several days...some of the sweetest, closest and smoothest shaves I've had in a while. I've shied away from non-adjustables in the past, so this was revelatory, especially given that I started with a Merkur Vision and Futur, in that order.

Picked this up back in Feb. Still polishing it a little. Unfortunately the seller did not mention the crack in the handle. I still decided to keep it, as I have never seen a J.A. Henckels DE razor and the head is different than the Merkur HD head.
The case is unique too, being baby blue cardboard lined in t super thin glossy coating of vinyl or something. The velvet is in good shape and so are the blade cases.
