I think that I saw that one, but dismissed it because of the handle, I thought it was a DE and mislabeled. Aww damn it, now there is another one to look for.

No kidding... Every time I think I am making progress. Somebody (usually Dave) is tossing another one up to us.

I got lucky a while back and managed to snag a like new, possibly NOS Streamline set a while back. Complete with box (with two small boxes on hinges for blades) razor, automatic stopping machine and unused strop embossed with the Ever-Ready name.

Yes, very. The razor is surprisingly heavy and well balanced.

How does it compare to the GEM G-Bar/Featherweight head? More mild, more aggressive?

I've been pondering how to answer this question. It is definitely much more aggressive than the G-Bar. It is much more like a lather-catcher, but it is very heavy and extremely solid in feeling compared to a lather-catcher. I've previously posted that it's something between a 1914 and a G-Bar. I would now think it's more like somewhere between a lather-catcher and a 1914.

I would say that the difference between the G-Bar and the Streamline is much like the difference between say a Merkur classic and a slant. The G is much lighter and nowhere near as aggressive.

I just shaved a two day growth with my Streamline and I got a presentable shave with one pass. Very close, almost BBS with two quick passes. That's very similar performance to a slant with a sharp blade or a lather-catcher.

That is a great description. Thanks!

Call me crazy, but I wish I could find a SE razor more mild than the G-Bar/Featherweight head. I find the Featherweight more than aggressive enough. I figured with an extra mild SE, I could really "hone" my skills.

I find that with my Featherweight, the first pass doesn't usually get as close as the first pass with a DE, but upon the second pass I typically get closer than a DE's, but if I am not EXTREMELY careful, I end up with irritation. I like the SE shave, but it takes a lot more patience.

milder? thats a tall order my friend :001_smile

it sounds like its just a matter of working on your technique with what you have already. you have the mildest SE razor ever made basically; the only thing that stinks is theres not a wide selection of blades like there is with DE blades, otherwise you could play around with that.

That is odd, since it can cut someone's face to death if not careful. A mild DE is what I would refer to as truly mild. No matter what you do (angles, pressure, etc) you have no way of nicking anything (think of a Slim/Fatboy set to 1).
I find shaving my neck very difficult with the SE razors. It is so easy to run the blade straight into your skin.

For me, those are basically the worst blades. I have the best luck with Treet carbon blades. They are FAR sharper than the stainless GEM blades.

They are FAR sharper than the stainless GEM blades.I've found Treet's,Pal's and Blue Star's to be truly sharp for a maximum of 2 shaves no matter how I dry them.:rolleyes:And believe me I've tried everything:confused:The Personna's last for at least 4 good shaves, and are very consistant in their sharpness. Regards Phil.

To me the problem with the stainless Personna blades is they are not sharp, not even on the first shave.
I was able to get 5 good shaves from a Treet blade. Yes it was duller after about 2-3 shaves, but no duller than a brand new stainless GEM Personna. The two experiences I have had with a PAL blade were bad. Decently sharp, but a lot of nicks for some reason. Some dragging on the 2nd pass.
Never tried the Blue Star blades.

Gem Personna's and the much vaunted Ted Pella coated blades are exactly the same!:rolleyes:And imho are extremely sharp and long lasting. ymmv.

No, I wouldn't call you crazy, I believe I understand where you're coming from. FWIW, it seems to me that the folks over at GEM knew what their competition at Gillette and Schick were doing. And it seems to me that GEM decided that their product was going to be something very different than anything else out there, and that aggressive razors was what they decided to make. (Schick made few DE razors and seems to have concentrated on injectors and so they too went with a different approach than Gillette.)

Anyway, back on topic, it seems to me that GEM decided to make a rather aggressive razor. Most folks seem to agree that most Gillette razors range from extremely mild to very mild to rather mild. I know that a fatboy at 9 is aggessive and I know that NEWs are aggressive, and I know about the Red Tip: I own all three of these very fine Gillettes, but I think the point holds: Gillette for the most part made rather gentle razors. Certainly all the superspeeds are rather gentle. Merkurs are generally thought of as much more aggressive, and from what I can tell, it seems that GEM razors are in the aggressive camp as well.

I don't think that's an accident. I think they went with aggressive designs to set themselves apart from Gillette.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the G is the mildest of GEMs designs by the way. I've often wondered what the "G" stood for, I always assumed it was "GEM". I'm now wondering whether they tried to create the idea that the "G" was their version of Gillette.

Others have posted on this idea, and I know you're aware, but it could be the blade.

One last thing: I'm not convinced that people who like mild razors don't eventually do better with more aggressive ones. I have soft skin and a tough beard. For me, aggressive razors give me better results because I can get a better shave with fewer passes and with less irritation. And so although my skin is soft and one would think that a gentle razor is the way to go, I found the opposite to be true. It took a while to get there, but that's where I am now. I find the result of that is that I get better shaves from the GEM 1914 than I do from the G. I get better shaves from my G than from my Gillettes, I get great shaves from my Streamline, and from my Merkur slant as well.

Gabe, Ontario. If either or both of you Gents 'tire' of your beautiful cased Jewells, let me know

FWIW, of the PAL and Blue Star Gems. Like Phil, I get nothing useful after two shaves from the Blue Star. Whereas with the PAL, I can squeeze four.....but really shouldn't. To detail, each shave is WTG, XTG, ATG for BBS.
