View Full Version : SS shaves: 40's compared with flair tip

Quick SS question: do 40's style and flair tips shave differently? Is there any inherent difference in head design (blade gap / angle) or overall balance?
Is one milder or more aggressive than the other?
(The wiki

says:
"The [early / 40's style] Super-Speed weighed in at 1.9 oz with a blade gap of .62mm". "The Regular [flair tip] Super-Speed weighed in at 58g with a blade gap of .58mm")
(58g = 2oz so I'll assume no difference in weight between a 40's and a flair tip and for the sake of this I'm not interested in coloured tips, black handles, rockets etc.)
Basically: do standard 40's and flair tip shave the same?

Absolutely do they NOT shave the same. For me, the 40'ies style superspeed razor is one of the best, if not THE best shaving tool out there, whereas the flare tip SS to me shaves....average.

Concur. I get a smoother shave from the 40's SS.

I got a decent shave from a 40's SS, but prefer my 60's flare tip (solid end caps, flatter head). That said I had a 40's Milord which shaved horribly. Sold it after a week of shaving with it. It tore up my face. Go figure.

I just had a fine shave with a red tip SS. The other night I used a 40's SS and it was a pretty good shave but not as good as the red tip.
Another example of YMMV?

I have tried the 40's SS and the 60's SS. There was no comparison. The 40's was the superior razor of that group. However, the 50's flaretip has head geometry that is closer to the 40's, so I am waiting on one to come in the mail to give that one a try.

The 40's for me provided a much better shave. The one that does not have the notch is the best of the bunch.

I have a 47 SS on the way, and I am very much looking forward to trying that - but so far, my best shaving TTO is my Ranger Tech...
I've found the flare tips only *eh* in comparison.
I've tried SS's in the 40's and 50's and for me, the 40's were tops. I got rid of all of my 50's. I get the most comfortable and close shave with the 40's. Sometimes I get irritation on the neck and the 40's SS keeps that from happening. For me, I'll never buy another safety razor. Straights on the other hand...:tongue_sm
Another vote for the 40's. I've tried the 40's, 50's, and 60's. For me, the 40's SS was the best. In fact, it is the only SS I still have.

OK, thanks guys.
Now what about Rockets?
Same or better or worse as a 40's style?

i have a '65 SS and wondered what would be just a hair more aggressive..looks like the black handle SS just might be the ticket.
good thread btw.
