Be careful when at a desk and take your watch off when using a laptop. If I follow those two rules, I never get any scratches.

When I wear my more expensive watches, I pay attention to my left hand :001_tongu
I've never scratched any of my sapphire crystals, and have banged a couple of them pretty good. Mineral and Acrylic crystals will get marked up, but I've had good luck removing the marks with toothpaste or polywatch.

The bezels on my Rolex and Omega watches are hard to mess up. You just about have to slide them across a floor to damage them. Bracelets are another story and will get marked up. Sooner or later any watch you wear will get some wear marks. If they get too bad, send the watch off for service.

Enjoyed wearing this one so much yesterday, I decided to get it another whirl today

Does anyone know where in Australia I might be able to check out/ buy one of those Stowa Flieger watches? I'm going to read some reviews but my Omega's might well be pensioned off VERY soon. Well, maybe not... but I really want one of these now. That is possibly the coolest watch I have seen in an age.

Stowa only sells watches through their website: www.stowa.com. Stowa and Meistersinger are my favourite watches for the same reason: very simple, fantastic quality and workmanship, and elegant without being gauche.

You do know it's a bit of an "homage" to the IWC Big Pilot...right?

You do know it's a bit of an "homage" to the IWC Big Pilot...right?

Not really. Stowa is one of the original companies (which included IWC) to produce Flieger watches for the German air force. It's not even close to an 'homage', IMO. From the Stowa site: "During the 1940s, only five companies made the original pilot watches: IWC, A. Lange & Söhne, Laco, Wempe and STOWA."

The German government decided on the specs, and the five companies all had to produce according to that. In that sense, all modern Fliegers, IWC included, are homage watches to the originals.

Wow, that's fascinating--didn't know that.

But Stowa is just a brand now, one that Jorg Schauer bought and resurrected--it's not really the same company that made those early fliegers, afaik. (To be clear, I'm a Schauer fan and believe he's doing good work)

I'm sure you'll disabuse me of that if I'm wrong

Again, in a way. Jorg was apparently hand-picked by the son of the founder when he himself was ready to retire. So, you're obviously right, Jorg isn't of the family; but he was chosen by the family (of course that may just be hype to keep brand loyalty, who knows!). Regardless, you're right, he does make a fine watch. Now, if I ever get a tenure track job, maybe I'll swing for an IWC one day! They are also quite a watch! A bit beyond my current PhD candidate income. Cool! I was poking around IWC and found that Carl Jung was actually linked to the company. Interesting.

The Casio Waveceptor. It has everything I require:

(1) It keeps perfect time (it receives a radio signal from the atomic clock, and sets itself while I sleep)
(2) It's solar, so it never requires a battery
(3) It looks good
(4) It has a perpetual calendar, so I never have to set the date
(5) It's cheap enough that if something bad happened to it, I wouldn't feel terrible or stupid.

heh, thanks.

that one was purchased to see if i liked the styling of the Omega Planet Ocean, where the Seiko mod gets it's looks. just wish i'd spent the extra $40 for the domed sapphire crystal.

the wife told me to just get the Omega, but i was a little hesitant about a serious "investment grade" watch.

funny part is, while i still admire and lust for the Omega, i just can't justify the cost when i get so much joy out of the modded 007. and, considering my track record with watches, trashing a $260 Seiko will not cause me too much pain versus a doorknob killing a $5k Omega.

If you really want the Planet Ocean, you can easily find preloved models on TZ in 95%+ condition for less than $2500. There are also Omega AD's that will discount that model 30% or more. Biggest thing to remember...Never pay retail on an Omega :wink2:

great watch. the Black Monster is a great all round user. it's my "other Seiko".

Gents, I have not posted in a while. I recently purchased a black Seiko Monster to wear on construction sites. I did not want to risk any of my vintage watches on the field.

I must say that I am impressed with this watch. It is rugged and good looking. I am considering buying an Orange monster.

Wait - a watch that does exactly what a watch is supposed to do, a good looking watch that performs flawlessly? Yet, it isn't rare and it didn't cost much.

Mind boggling. :wink2:

Timex Expedition. They are great firefighting watches. They can withstand a lot of heat, steam, cold, shock, and submersion in water. And best of all, they are easy and cheap to replace -- something I haven't had to do in nearly eight years!

i'm assuming you mean "The Life Aquatic". got mine through the seller "Zenitar" on Ebay. he's considered pretty reliable in the Russian watch community. if he doesn't have that model currently available, drop him a message and he can probably get it.

fyi, it appears prices have gone up to around $50-$60 since i bought mine.

You may want to look at one in person before purchasing it. The orange color is more like the color of a pumpkin instead of the brighter orange that is more common. I think the yellow one would be a better option.

True, but if you don't need a mint Red Sub or something like that, the vintage Rolex market has actually taken a pretty big hit in the bad economy. Buyer's market right now, and some real deals to be had for people with the cash.

You could pick up an "average" vintage GMT or Sub right now for considerably less than a new one, just FYI.

Oh, man. Do I ever love this watch. I have a plan to get one in the new year. I went back and forth (and back and forth) between this and the Meistersinger 3-hand Scrypto Automatik. I finally went with the Meistersinger (because I absolutely love the dial). But will eventually get this one, too because I really like the hand-winding Unitas 6498 movement.

Great watch, Rudy.

(Gee, Andrew, 45mm not incl. crown... makes the Mako II feel diminutive!)

I'm finding that big watches that are designed well "wear small" - don't know that they LOOK small (or even presentable) on a skinny wrist like mine - but they feel good. Not uncomfortable at all.

Omega pocket watch. Got it from an uncle of my father. He used it when he was working with the Norwegian railwais. I think it is ca. 1930. It still keep the time perfectly. You can see a damage around the "4" number. My fathers uncle told me that he lost the watch down on the railway once, so that`s why.

Now there is a beautiful watch that you don't see very often. On top of that it's a Omega Railroad watch, but best of all is that it belonged to your great uncle. Just think, your uncle used that watch during the Depression and WWII. That is a very impressive history!
