The Ecozilla is a BIG watch (48mm wide x 18mm thick). Mine is the SS model, so it is Heavy too. It does wear well, but you know it is on your wrist. I've had this one about 4 years and have found it to be very accurate. When fully charged it will run for 180 days. I was out of town on business for a couple of months and mine lived in the watch box. Upon return home I checked the time and it was perfect.
The lume on this model is Great. Lasts for hours upon hours and would rival the Black/Orange Monster. If you are a fan of Dive style watches and don't want to drop a wad of cash, the Ecozilla and Black Monster should be at the top of your list.

To you collectors or lovers of fine watches,

What does your wife/girlfriend wear? Do you also purchase watches for her when you buy a watch?

...

Funny you ask...My 1953 Bulova found a smaller band and wound up on her wrist. It actually looks better on her. The "older" vintage watches are just too small for my wrist. The only problem is she was sifting through my drawer and picked up my '68 (I think that's right) black sunburst dialed Bulova and commented on how nice she thought it looked on her also. :001_huh:

She has a fair number of watches of her own, including some '70s Seikos that were her Mom's who bought them on a business trip to Japan.

Here's a nice little Bulova 23 Jewel, Self Winding, Six Adjustment watch I dug up at a tag sale today for $5.00. It has a pretty cool scalloped edge around the crystal and I think it's called a sunburst dial (Austin?) I have to take it in to be cleaned and oiled this week. I'm hoping the discoloration on the dial will clean up nicely.
I wound it up and wore it all day and it is keeping perfect time. Happy, happy!!!

Very nice watch, and what a deal! Very similar to mine, scalloped bezel and all, though my dial face is black. I believe however those watches went into the 60s. IIRC mine is a '68 model, though I would need to re-check that date. I will say that I spent considerably more for mine.

Here is my tungsten carbide Movado Valor. This is my favorite watch! Its also my only big purchase watch. I mainly got it because I'm one of those people who tend to bang their watch on anything and everything. Whats worse is I don't even realize it until I look at my watch and see the scratches. So, the scratch-resistant material is very much worth it!

Look past the finger prints... it needs to be cleaned.

I think that that is probably what edged the Speedmaster ahead when NASA tested about a dozen high end watches for use in space. Most of the other obvious choices were probably automatics that might not keep going. Of course they could all be wound manually via the crown, but the classic Speedmaster can only be wound that way. I believe the power reserve is 40 hours on a full wind.

My Orient Multi Eyes popped off my wrist the other day (don't know how that happened) and smacked the hard floor of Dulles Airport. Knocked the 24 hour hand out of its setting. Had it reset by a local jeweler, but it became unregulated overnight!:9898::c17::cryin:

luckily the jeweler told me that if there was anything wrong with it, I should just bring it back and he would fix it for free. Looks like I will be going back this Friday.

Difficult decision, but if one had to go it would be...the Exp II. I really like the White dial, but there is just something about the Sea-Dweller. Both of them are nice sized watches, so no worries about being too big or too small.

I've wanted a Datejust for years, but I just can't get over the 36mm size. My wrists are just over 7 3/4" and the DJ looks a little small on my wrist. Don't know if it is because everything I wear is 40mm or more, but for some reason I can't pull the trigger on the DJ. Believe me...I've tried more times than I care to admit. It's really a shame, since there are sooooo many pre-loved Datejusts available at very fair prices. Now is a Great time to buy...if you are in the market.

I'm very excited about the DJ II, but I'm waiting to see one in person before I go too far. Of course, if they offered more dial and bracelet choices I'd be sleeping outside of my local AD

And my favorite...Chinese knockoff of an Omega Seamaster Pro that is exactly right in almost every detail to the real thing. I've held it side-by side with a genuine model and it's amazing in terms of detail, fit & finish, weight...it's my baby and I love it!

Kevan

Oh, spare me that tripe. I never said I purchased it anyway.

And the people that made it are taking their own risk in doing so. Besides, the people who want to pay $1500 for a genuine Omega SMP or $4200 for a genuine Planet Ocean can go right ahead...Omega certainly isn't hurting due to the Chinese knockoff makers. Neither is Rolex or any of the other premium Swiss companies. Hell, if they can survive the 1970's quartz boom when the market fell out for mechanical watches, they can certainly survive the Attack of the Chinese Cheapies(tm).

You're paying for the movement anyway when you buy a big name; that's what they charge for. I like the style but dislike the insane markup. And no one complains about homages...they just cry foul about replicas. What's the difference? How does a few more letters on a dial or clasp make it worse than an homage that shares all the design elements of a Rolex Submariner but says "Orient" or Invicta" or "Timex" on the dial?

Answer -- NOTHING. Nothing at all. An authentic watch has two concrete advantages...the movement and the warranty so it can be repaired at an AD. If one buys a replica watch and then tries to pawn it off as REAL, that's dishonest. If they take it to a repair shop and claim it's real but they lost the papers, that's dishonest.

If a seller makes a replica and MARKETS it as authentic, that's illegal, and the companies can go after them. If they make replicas and make no bones about said replicas being homages, the companies can't do a thing.

You should post a pic of your '70s Orient

The Orient Sub is very nice and I almost bought one a few months ago. But I went with a blue Mako instead. I'm loving it.

Kevan
08-05-2009, 11:07 PM
I've looked lovingly at the Mako for several years now. I just can't decide if I want to buy it and put it on a Bond NATO strap or just go with the Sub-a-like because it fits better with the "Milsub" theme. The thing that puts me off about the Mako is the bezel.

I should've gotten a custom watch from Bill Yao before he raised his prices prohibitively sometime back. Since I didn't, I'm looking at different black Sub homages. I'm leaning toward Orient. But I wish I could find something with a domed crystal.

I own several "real" watches that I saved to buy just like every other watch I have, so how does my owning one replica an insult to people that buy real ones? Again, spare me that tripe. How is it an extension of my character to not want to pay $1500 for a watch that costs Omega less than $200 to make?

It certainly didn't bother the guy who showed me his genuine SMP for comparison. I didn't mind telling him (or anyone for that matter) that mine was a replica. The quality of it impressed me, him, and everyone that has seen it. It is NOT a piece of junk. At all. There are some replicas that are incredibly well-made, and mine is such a piece. There is NO difference in quality that I can discern between my replica and a "real" SMP. The weight, feel, build quality, sapphire crystal, engraving, bracelet, bezel alignment, dial, crown stamps, brushed/polished accents, even the movement are of first-rate quality. In fact, the movement in my "piece of junk" replica is smoother than in my Seikos, with hacking seconds.

I don't see it as a piece of crap at all. It is a beautiful piece.

I've looked lovingly at the Mako for several years now. I just can't decide if I want to buy it and put it on a Bond NATO strap or just go with the Sub-a-like because it fits better with the "Milsub" theme. The thing that puts me off about the Mako is the bezel.
I've seen pictures of black Makos with NATO straps and they look great. However, for the look that you want, the sub is the way to go. The one thing that I didn't like about the Orient sub is that at 39mm it seemed a little small.

As for the bezel on the Mako, there are a couple of things I don't really care for. One is that it is polished steel and it doesn't match the brushed steel finish on the case top. It also could do without the little indentations on the ring at the makers.

Thanks, over all I really like it, and it keeps excellent time. Eventually I might customize it a bit. A different bezel (don't know how hard that would be on an Orient) and maybe different hands.

Have you looked into the Invictas? I believe some of their subs are 41mm and 42mm. And I believe their movements are Miyota, so pretty reliable.

My very first watch under the "higher" price range was an Invicta Pro Diver. I still have it, but I never really liked it. Their build-quality (at least on my model, which was 1st gen) leaves a little to be desired and I'm not too crazy about the polished center link on the bracelet.

There is NO difference in quality that I can discern between my replica and a "real" SMP. The weight, feel, build quality, sapphire crystal, engraving, bracelet, bezel alignment, dial, crown stamps, brushed/polished accents, even the movement are of first-rate quality.

Have you taken your replica SMP diving? If not, how can you say there "is NO difference in quality?" I believe you would be surprised at how quickly you could see the difference in quality

Kevan
08-06-2009, 11:32 AM
I don't dive. So I don't care. Furthermore, you can get a 300m Citizen or Seiko diver for a fraction of the price of an SMP or Rolex Sub. Same water resistance (if that's how you measure "quality, which is how I interpret your post), so what's your point? Just because a watch isn't $1500 doesn't mean it's not a quality piece.

My SMP replica is resistant to water enough for my purposes (rain, washing hands/dishes). And believe me....short of opening it up and looking at the movement, or maybe looking at the dial printing under heavy magnification, there is no way to tell the difference between my replica and a genuine SMP. It's NOT a shoddy, haphazard piece of crap.

I know that replica dive watches aren't meant to take diving. But how many people who do own divers today actually dive with them? Many of us are "desk divers" who judge quality in other ways.

Austin

Personally, I don't like replicas. They seem silly to me. I remember seeing a young man wearing a Daytona replica at an upscale bar. He was proud of it and made every effort to extend his wrist every chance he got. I did stare at it and could tell the dial was not correct. He was obviously trying to impress some girls sitting at the bar. I overheard some loudmouth making fun of this kid. I felt sorry for him. He seemed like a good kid. He would have done better just wearing a Seiko or Citizen.

As already mentioned, save your money and buy the real thing. There is nothing wrong buying a used Omega or Rolex.

Kevan

Yes, bad quality replicas are cheap and sad and silly. But good quality ones are just as good as the real thing in almost every respect, right down to the smallest details, unless you really want the genuine movement.

Ive seen bad replicas and would just as soon wear one of my Seikos instead. My SMP replica has fooled those who own the real thing, but I don't go out to fool or mislead anyone. To those who ask, I say it's not real. I feel no shame, because I have held and worn both and I personally don't think a genuine SMP is worth the retail price.

I'm always on the lookout for vintage Omegas, though.

An old coworker used to have a Porsche Design replica that passed for the real thing. Side by side you couldn't tell the difference. He said it had a Citizen movement (Miyota, I would imagine) and it was very accurate. I've never considered getting one, but I can see why some go the route of a quality replica. A couple of hundred vs $3000+... for some, that's a no brainer.

Why settle for almost as good when you can buy the genuine article. If you can't afford the real deal, buy something that isn't a FAKE. As you have already stated, there are numerous options for less than $1500. I'm sure you are aware the Black Monster and Ecozilla can easily be found for less than $250. Not to mention they aren't FAKE

I don't like skeleton watches. They look too much like bling. Skeleton watches were originally made as demonstrators for watch salesmen. The watch company usually only exposed the back to show the movement in action.

I saw a pic of one made by Maurice Lacroix I actually liked...because usually I agree with Austin.

You can get a watch that will dive deeper, last longer, and do more things than a Rolex, Omega, etc. for a fraction of the price. Heck, a G-Shock can do more than the most complicated Patek can. The point of owning fine timepieces is not to brag or boast; the point of wearing one is to appreciate the work of art a watch is.

Just as an FYI, MANY, MANY people take their high end watches diving. Type "Comex Rolex" into Google and read whatever comes up.

Whether your replica is well-built or not is not the point. I'm trying to convey to you that by owning a replica is supporting an illegal business and the awful conditions those workers work in. Also, people who have worked their butts off to save for the real deal feel insulted by replica watches.

I am done arguing here.

Good. You're a diver and use your genuine SMP for diving. If I was a diver and had the resources, sure I would consider a genuine SMP (though personally I might consider a Seiko MarineMaster with a Spring Drive instead).

But I'm perfectly happy with my replica SMP. The only thing I wish is if it had the styling of the newer SMPs, from this decade. Mine's got mid-90's styling.

I don't brag or boast. I didn't get my replica to brag or boast; I already said that. I also never denied that plenty of people dive with Rolexes and Omegas. The post you quoted was in response to another member trying to say that my replica's lack of water resistance was a yardstick of its quality, which I disagree with.

And while I'll concede you have a point about working conditions, that's not steady ground to stand on, because I could say the same thing about anyone who's ever bought a pair of shoes or anything made by Nike.

And YOU might feel insulted by my owning a replica watch because you saved your money to buy a real one. But so have I. In fact, I have multiple real ones. So what's your point? And I've also met plenty of people that AREN'T insulted by my watch.

Kid, you've got strong convictions. And that's a good thing. But don't you think it would be more rewarding to direct them toward something bigger and more meaningful than the replica watch trade?

Okay, I'll try to get a picture of it tomorrow in natural light, so as to show the color contrast better.

Until tomorrow when I can photo mine on my wrist with something other than my cell phone...here is the SMP replica model I have. Production year 2006, of a mid-90's SMP as far as I can tell. As you can see, the pearl on the bezel is a bit off, but other than that it's extremely faithful.

This one's black but mine's blue. The correct blue. Some of them are incorrect but mine is the right shade on bezel and dial.

Actually, I do, but it is out of necessity. A regular sized band is almost too small for me. I usually have to use the first or second hole in the band. I find a large fits much better. I also don't wear watches on my wrist bone like most people. I wear it as low to the hand as possible. Mrs. Pal thinks it cool so what can I say.

The small crown isn't an annoyance to me at all. You know, I've seen that said many times over the years on the watch forums but it just isn't an issue for me. I rarely have to touch the crown anyway since it is an automatic watch. Might be a pain if I had to wind it every day, but it's pretty much set it and forget it.

Harold is a great guy, and fantastic to do business with. I do prefer Jonathan's (Swedefreak on SCWF) endlinks, though. They're not solid, but according to the pictures, they fit better. I have them, and can attest that they are well-made. They don't accept the fat spring bars, though. There's a guy on ebay and on Watchuseek that will sell you a super oyster with these endlinks, for a discount if you're a Watchuseek or other watch forum member. I bought that with the upgraded 4-hole clasp (which I highly recommend, it's much nicer than the others) for under $60, I believe.

Nice watch, by the way! It's even more awesome that it was your dad's. I have one from my birth year that I love quite a bit.

I've got a 4-hole Super Oyster on the way. Once I get it fitted up, I'll post pics.

As long as we're going Japanese today, I'll show you the watch I wore to the golf course today (after I snuck out of work early for a quick 9 holes before dinner :whistling:). Yes, it's a Ben Hogan!

Neil, all of your watches are special. This one is really unique!

My newest piece to the collection in on my wrist today. It's a 1954 Elgin De Luze "Pie face" with Coin edge.

Thanks. No flash and macro seemed to do it.

Here's my Submariner. August 19 will mark one year of ownership.

BBQ today so I thought the Submariner was appropriate.

My favorite one yet, Ray. I always love petite seconds. That watch looks pristine -- it's hard to believe it's 55 years old!!

Great looking Sub, Austin. I bet it was a tough decision to go with the non-date style. I know why I would have picked the non-date but what was your reasoning?

I prefer non-date watches because I have so many in my collection that it's hard to keep them all wound. I have a watch winder but would have to buy many more for my collection.

Isn't this the one you dropped on the floor a while back? So is working fine now?

Yes, that's the one. It's all fixed and working properly now (for the princely sum of $20.00). Thankfully, it was nothing more than the 24 hour hand being jarred loose from its housing. A local jeweler fixed it up really nicely for me.

It's only a month or so old and it's my baby, so I was really upset. Luckily, Japanese watches are built like tanks. And after this weekend I know it's still water resistant!:001_tt1:

I love the watch, I think that's my favorite Orient. I almost pulled the trigger on it when it was on Deal of the Day, but I couldn't. Where did you purchase yours from?

Great watch!

Thanks, yeah I am really happy with it. I bought it from The Discount Watch Store (http://www.discountwatchstore.com) which was a great experience and I highly recommend them. Prompt attentive service and excellent prices (I also believe they have a price match policy, IIRC).

Orients are dangerous because they are not prohibitively expensive and look great. Now, that blue mako is really beckoning me. Maybe I can convince my wife to get it for me for my birthday.
