Absolutely.
I also don't wear a watch when baking either, or my claddagh(dried dough is a PITA to clean out of everything.)
Claddagh? You must have married an Irish girl like I did.

So after an afternoon of hunting I am proud to show my find and what I am wearing now. It's a vintage 30's Elgin. I dislike the band (but I will change it) and it needs to have a real good cleaning. I dug it out of a .50 junk box and wound it up, it's running strong and holding good time. I'd say the hunt was a successful one today.....

Beautiful early military style watch Ray. I would put a chocolate brown band with off-white/light brown stitches on it to emphasise the military look.
Regards.

$0.50!!! You better have a big grin. Throw a leather strap on that thing and it will be gorgeous! I really love the numerals and the face (I'm always partial to small seconds), and the "outline" hands are also very classy.

Sorry, just my ASD (Attention Surplus Disorder) kicking in. Back on topic --
I'm not wearing a wristwatch today, so I am posting some pics of the white gold Waltham pocket watch which I received from my father. Originally, it was his father's watch, purchased new around 1923. I wish that I was more adept with the digital camera, because I do not feel that I have adequately captured the beauty of this watch.
Enjoy!
Neil, that is a beautiful watch and the history really makes it that much more interesting.

Really that was a great find. My wife just showed me a Waltham wrist watch that I will post a picture of later that belonged to her great grandmother in 1915. She has owned it for all these years and never once mentioned it to me. Talk about an outsider!

I quit wearing them about 10 years ago, though, so nothing to brag about.
Although the displays of pocket watches in some antique stores have piqued my curiosity. But I know less about them than I do about razors!

I have been sporting my Citizen all this week.
I have to say, I am already impressed with it's durability.
Clipped a door(ala Ray) and figured I had given it it's first scratch.
Looked down and :scared: a sliver of metal!
Turns out, the titanium case, is stronger than the chrome plated brass that they make door locks out of, and the sliver was a chunk of it as proof.
Just for amusement, here is an early Waltham wrist watch that belonged to my wife's grandmother who was born in 1898. The patend is 1915 and the case is made by the Philadelphia Watch Case Company.

A word of warning my friend; these one-piece straps tend to pick up sand, salt and dirt real fast - ending up working like fine grit sandpaper against the back of the watch. I have seen many fine vintage watches with totally messed up backs due to them being worn with a one-piece strap. Especially gold and gold filled watches are vulnerable.
Regards.

Most gents with automatics keep them on watch winders. A watch winder is usually a display box that rotates or gyrates. Thus your autos stay wound. I have too many watches so I just wind them when I wear them. I also have my watches serviced every 3-5 years.

Thanks, Pal. One of the things I like about that Jazzmaster is that, because of the unique style of the face, it works as well with a tuxedo as it does with blue jeans, and, because it is relatively reasonably priced, I enjoy wearing it either way (formal or informal).

As far as vintage watches go, I think Rolex look the best. If you think that an AD is starting, wait until you look at Patek Philippe, A. Lange & Söhne, or Vacheron Constantin. Figuring out how to pronounce some of these upscale watches is half the fun.

By the way, the modern Pronto's are made in China and they are made basically for internet sales. Sad:frown:

You are very welcome, if I can help you with information I will.
Please be aware that the radial brushing on your Tissot is rarely seen in such good shape and that only a few people are able to restore it if it gets scratched.
I will have to haul my dad's Tell Fleurier out of the safe tomorrow, it bears some resemblence to your Tissot.

Jakob, I had no idea! Thank you for that info.
There is a small scratch to the upper right hand corner of the case, near the crown. But it seems superficial, perhaps a mishap from someone setting the time carelessly.
Good to know that I shouldn't clean it very agressively, though, as there is some accumulated crud where the crystal meets the case.
Do you know what such a watch is worth, approximately? I think I paid about $40 on the 'Bay for it in 2006. Its last home was in England. I'm no investor in watches (I only buy those I think are interesting, and that I can afford), but I am curious.
Incidentally, is there a resource where I can track down the numbers marked on the inside case back, the movement, or the back of the band clasp?
Thanks again for your insight!

Here's my watch today.
How I wish that I could tell you this is a true vintage triple-signed Tissot.
Alas, the watchmaker who got it working for me again informed me that the face was taken from another watch, and was essentially tacked onto a generic 15-jewel movement and placed in the case. The case is marked only CW (interlocking insignia) "Steel Back A". The band was a gift from the jeweler. Unfortunately, the movement is a little tetchy, not very reliable.
The face is so beautiful, with a brushed copper appearance. If you have an authentic version of this watch, or know of where I could find one, please PM me!
Thanks!

It's unfortunate that the original movement wasn't saved. It does knock down the value for serious collectors. Nevertheless, that's a sweet looking Tissot. It looks like it's about 33mm without the crown. I would guess that it was manufactured in the 50's to early 60's.

Thanks gents,
I don't mind that the value is lessened. I just wish it was a reliable timekeeper! It has a tendency to stop from time to time, and the case back sometimes comes loose.
I'd love to find one like this that does a better quality movement. But I wonder if I ever will.
Austin, you're very close. It's actually 32mm across, without the crown. I like this size of watch, especially those with simple roman numerals and a subsecond dial. I find them to be very elegant.

DS/B MCS, that is an incredible picture! It simply conveys, "The Good Life",
the beach and the blue waters of the Bahamas, and Rolex. It just does not get much better. Thanks for that picture. I going to dig up my Mama Bear's Polynesian Red:lol:
Today I am wearing my father's late 60s Tell Fleurier:
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e259/Jakobeep/Ure/Tell_Fleurier04.jpg
One of the sturdiest watches from that time. Waterproof down to 200 meters, screw in crown, a 6 mm. thick case and a 4 mm. thick crystal. The movement is an autmotatic ETA. My father is a mechanic and a blacksmith so this watch has seen it's share of abuse - when he gave it to me, I decided only to polish the crystal but leave the dents and scratches in the case, thus keeping the history my father has added to this watch - and also preserving the radial brushing.
I have carried this watch with a nato style strap before - but I think this very thick black lizard optic band suits the watch better. Tha case is only 40 mm in diameter, but it looks much bigger on the wriast, it needs a heavy band.
Regards.

That's a nice Dweller. Is that condensation on the crystal? It looks like you need to have the gaskets replaced before the moisture does permanent damage.

I think the condensation is from the camera lens. Dwellers don't leak

At least this way it is never wrong! I don't like resetting dates, especially on watces that don't have a quickset.

Very nice watch! Over half a century, what a credit to the Omega group. Was this another from the "mystery boxes" group? The size of the dial face appears quite a bit larger than my Bulova of that same vintage. It is so small, I rarely wear it, but my Wife sure likes to wear it.

I'll keep my eyes out, there are very few places with vintage watches, and 80% of the time they are pocket watches.
