Austin, often the nice vintage watches that you post appear larger on the wrist than I would expect from watches of that era. They look like they are more modern sizes like 40 mm. What is the size of this nice Tissot?

This one is 34mm w/o the crown. Depending on the design, some wear larger on the wrist than you would expect. My wrist is 7.25". I find this true with vintage Tissot and Omegas. Most of these vintage Tissot are rebranded Omegas.

Nice!!

This was my mother's wedding gift to my father in the late '50s, purchased at a military base PX in Chateauroux. It had been lying dead in a drawer with a broken stem until I mooched it to refurb for his Father's Day gift this year. He refused the gift, saying it was to be mine someday and he would never wear it.

I've actually seen pictures posted of Mako's that have had the day pusher customized so that it is flush or even recessed in the watch case. The pusher is a clearly an unnecessary feature. I'm ambivalent about it however. It does distinguish the Mako/Mako XL/Ray watches in appearance from the other budget divers.

Speaking of low cost divers. Here's a new one from Sea-gull. Sapphire Crystal. 28,800 beat ST2130 movement. Resistant to 200M. Reportedly Very Good Lume. 43mm case. I don't think these features are available anywhere else at this cost. I want it but can't have it. Supposedly limited edition.

This is one of my favorites in my collection. It is one of the funky 70's design. It does not have an exhibition back. Back then, exhibition backs were reserved for salesmen and demos. They have become popular in the past few years to show off the movement.

Thanks little Big feather. You caught me off guard there. I had to get the users manual out. Since this is a "radio adjusted" watch there are three zones world wide. According where you are in the world, you can change the setting on the watch to receive the best reception. This makes sense for a pilot's watch.

Austin.....Pal, nice looking watches. You guys should start a Benrus forum......

Thanks for the nice comment. I am afraid that forum would have to be ran by Austin. Although I have a lot of respect for Benrus, I only own two watches at this time, and one of those is a pocket watch.

@KipNoxzema: That word you have written as "Cjiaba" is actually "Slava." In the Cyrillic alphabet "C" is always pronounced as "s," the next letter that looks a little like pi with a little curl at the start is actually an "L" and the "B" is prounounced as "V." Thus you have S - L - A - V - A. Slava. And there ends our little Russian lesson for today.

NOMOS, built in Glashutte Germany

Nomos makes very nice watches, though not cheap. For a cheaper alternative, similar looking, check out the German made Stowa Antea (http://www.stowa.de/lshop,showrub,13467867668642,en,1346786770-8669,antea,,,,.htm). Or if you want to go really cheap, there are some Chinese knockoffs such as Rodina (http://translate.google.pl/translate?sl=pl&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=pl&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chinawatches.pl%2Fviewtopic.php %3Ft%3D11256%26start%3D0), though I would not mess around with them.

cstone28
09-04-2012, 01:37 PM
I'm not going to knock Stowa because I've never held one in my hand. The price for the NOMOS was very reasonable for what it is. The build quality they provide, the manufacture movement included, the materials they choose all add up to more then the price I paid. YMMV.

LBF I love the Rolex GMT. Subs are more common but the GMT is just that little bit different, which makes them stand out.

I tend to end up with date watches but I really like no date models. In fact a no date sub or milgauss are high on my want list. SWMBO bought me a winder for our anniversary so rotating without setting has become a lot easier. Now I just need to remember to keep the NOMOS running.

Sounds like the GMT has a special place in your heart (hope its as good a place/memory as it could be). The story behind the watch is almost always as important as the watch.
