Is my dad's Timex Expedition on a velcro band a classic????...I wear it all the time......
Now don't go mocking the velcro military-band Timex Expedition; I have had one for about 7 years, it's fully functional, and still on the original battery! Keeps ridiculously good time, and has never failed me despite torturing it in every imaginable way.
That being said, today I'm wearing:
French-made Sir Niles manual w/date
Manufacture date unknown
Black leather band from a mall kiosk

Lefty here, wear mine on the right hand.
There are a few "lefty" watches out there, Invicta, Seiko, Graham($12k)
I don't mind having to take mine off to change the time, as I would most likely do it regardless of what hand it was on.

Nice Sea-Dweller!
True. True.
But since the Seadweller is discontinued and replaced by the Deep-Sea and the bicolor and solid-gold models of the Submariner already got that ugly ceramic-bezel, i am afraid that these classic watches are going to be extinct. At least in their original design.

And now for my contribution. Here is one my mother gave me just after my wife and I got married 8 years ago. It's a Lucien Piccard 'Seashark' that she picked up from the jeweler she worked for. It needs a band and seems to keep good time.

I find them through some website, estate sales, antique stores, etc. I only buy watches that are working unless they are unique. I have them serviced by my watchmaker.

I love the look of some of the vintage pieces, but I am notoriously hard on watches. I would be devastated if I killed one, that someone else would have been better off with.
For example, I killed a Timex about 4 hours after I bought it:eek:
I also love water, and need a watch that loves it too.

Unfortunately, vintage watches hate water. I don't wear them if it's raining or I am fishing. They were not meant to be near water unless they are divers. However, vintage diver watches need to have their gaskets changed periodically due to drying and rotting.
You could buy a nice vintage for evening wear and use a cheaper modern watch for daily wear. Most modern watches are waterproof.
My son is hard on watches. I have given him several that wind up dead. He does have a modern Croton diver that has lasted him over a year.
Just a few shots of my display at the annual Danish watch collectors convention. It didn't win any prices, but I did manage to get the votes of every female participant at the convention

Sorry to hear about the Seamaster. One of my favorite watches of all time. I really like the classic Seamasters. Understated and beautifully made.
I wear a Tag Heuer classic dive watch. All stainless, black bezel and face. It's your basic SOLID dive watch with classic DW lines. I've worn it everyday for nearly eleven years. I keep it clean and serviced and it's an exceptional timepiece. I like it for the same reason I love the classic Seamasters, utilitarian, handsome, solid. It's just the right size and weight for my wrist.
I have a couple of high-end Japan-made Seikos, that I got very cheap from overseas which I wear if I want to mix it up or if my Tag doesn't look quite right with the clothes I'm wearing...which is hardly ever. Seiko gets a bad rap in the U.S. some of their timepieces are very well made.

I got a nice 40s Omega two tone in the mail today. Nothing special, except from the fact that it is a very early automatic:

The dial has some patina; the logo is not very clear and there is some damage around the hole for the hands, but all in all it is rather nice.
The hands and crown are not original and has to be replaced, the original hands can be seen here; http://62.73.172.171/eMuseumPlus?service=direct/1/ResultListView/result.t2.collection_list.$TspTitleLink$0.link&sp=11&sp=Scollection&sp=SfieldValue&sp=0&sp=X&sp=3&sp=SsimpleList&sp=0&sp=X&sp=X&sp=X&sp=F&sp=F&sp=4

Austin, just curious but what is the story behind you and your Submariner?
Long story short, I bought this watch about 9 years ago to replace another Rolex that was given to me 10 years prior. At that time I did not feel comfortable wearing it because of my age. This submariner is a keeper and is promised to my son. I will pass it on to him when he gets married. Fortunately, it ain't going to happen for some years.

Today I am sporting my favorite, the original prototype for Rolex. This beauty comes complete with a brushed stainless steel 32mm dial with red tipped raised segments. It is 42mm overall with lugs. The Lug gap is 14mm to accept this brilliantly made high impact rubberflex studded band.
The beauty of this piece is that there are no worries of scratched crystals, warn motion parts or springs (there are none). It is waterproof and any depth fathomable and due to its high shine (depending on the sun strength and water clarity) is viewable up to one fathom.
I present to you the Solex.....

Wearing a modern Ball "Mad Cow" today. It has nice powered luminous dial.
By the way, if you wish to keep mechanical watches for long term, be sure to service them once every 5 years or so. The lubricants in the watch will dry out over time and cause massive wear if left un-serviced.
On other hand, modern ETA movements are "cheap", ($100-$300), so replacing an entire movement may be cheaper than regular servicing. So if your watch movement is of rare design, do maintain them. They could last 200 years or more when properly maintained.

My biggest watch is a 36 mm. Not very big, but I am not much into the modern "oversized" watches. For me 40 mm would probably be the limit for a dress watch and 42 mm for a tool-watch. I find that watches over 44 mm. tend to look too big on most people.

Actually you are right. It does say Cellini but am not sure it is the real deal. In fact I think it may be a replica as the crown position on the dial does not seem right. This on shows the crown under the 12 and others I have viewed have the crown replacing the 12.
Either way, with all the other pieces in the box that are verifiable, I am not at all disappointed. Ok maybe just a little....But theres still the next box...

Here it is. It is mechanical working and holing time very nicely. I'll need to have it cleaned and serviced. Last shot is for sizing.
Any ideas as to year/model?

That is a beauty! Late 40s or early 50s. The crystal is actually a piece of shaped crystal.
It looks like the manual winding version - not as rare as the automatic (Ladymatic). But still a very nice watch. The lugs are quite something.
Unfortunally the dial is heavily patinated. But do not get i replaced, it will decrese the value of the watch greatly!
The crown looks to be an unoriginal replacement, It should be replaced with an original one (which will also be smaller and more elegant).
Regards.

An old Soviet military watch. I visited Berlin soon after the wall was demolished in 1989 and street vendors around the Brandenburg Gate had buckets full of these for a few Marks a piece. I bought a couple of different models. Keeps good time, is water proof (unlike the Polyot knock off of the Speedmaster that fills with water in the shower), and automatic.

Here's my entry for the day. A nice Villard 17 Jewel (from the box) Still needs a good cleaning but I could not resist tossing a band on it and have a go at it.

My "dream watch"! Is that 18k? No matter, she is a real beauty!
It's 18 carat gold filled with a steel back.
I found the watch in this condition:
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e259/Jakobeep/Ure/Seamaster_02_01.jpg
Hands painted black, drops of paint on the dial, seconds hand missing, big steel crown from a Tissot(!) and lots of small scratches on the case. Aparently the watch had been modified to suit the needs of a weak sighted person.
I had it restored (almost) to it's former glory. It was costly - but worth it.
Regards.

Once again, I am embarrassed by the poor quality of my photos. I'll figure it out eventually.
This is a Gevril GV2, which sports an ETA 2836-2 movement. I love the classic, clean face, with the rose gold applique arabic numerals. The best part about this watch, aside from all the compliments it generates, is that it did not cost an arm and a leg, even though it is a "limited edition".
