Congrats...I'm thinking my next watch (if there is a next...Ha!) might be something similar. Both of my "good" watches have dark faces (black and dark blue), so something with a light-colored face might be in order. Just as long as there's enough contrast between the hands and the face...my old eyes need some help! :001_rolle

It isn't actually a cyclops above the date window, but rather a round date window on the dial, so no magnification. The round date window was one of the features that attracted me to this watch. The Mark II version has a more traditional date window. It is more obvious in Snargles' picture of his black face version.

That was also one of the factors that helped me choose the MK1 over the MK2. There's just something out-of-balance about a watch face made up of various-sized circles with a square date window.

Thanks Tim. Here is some more information on this brand:

Cuervo y Sobrinos History

In order to enter the world of Cuervo y Sobrinos and somehow understand it, one has to start by imagining a world far from the pressing daily routine of the west’s industrialised society of the late 1800s...

The search for adventure and an aristocratic way of life had brought to Havana a circle of intellectuals, navigators, businessmen, adventurers and “bons vivants”. An ideal mix, aware of but indifferent to everything that progress was inevitably bringing about. Already at that time the remedy was obvious and natural: “to cultivate the spirit”. One hundred years later, the world, invaded by stress, would embark upon a new “global” search for the ephemeral goal of a “better quality of life”.

Havana, 1882. It was already there. Imbued with this spirit, Armando Rio y Cuervo, with the collaboration of his brothers, competently and devotedly directed the watchmaker’s business, which had been founded by his uncle Ramon. Hence the name Cuervo y Sobrinos (Cuervo and Nephews). These skilled and famous jewellers established a boutique in Havana’s Fifth Avenue from which to offer to a select and demanding clientele beautiful and elegant objects, capable of withstanding the ebbs and flows of fashion.

Thanks to the courage of their choices and the originality of their proposals, in a few years La Casa (the house) became a steady point of reference for the whole of America until, with the elapsing of half a century, their fame, similar to that enjoyed by other jewellers in New York, Paris or Rome, was such that they were obliged to open three new branches: one in Pforzheim in Baden, Germany and then later in Paris on the elegant rue Mezlay and in La Chaux-de-Fonds, at the heart of the Swiss watch-making industry.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, their continuous search for elegance and refinement resulted in the Cuervo y Sobrinos house being a famous brand well-known throughout America, in harmony with the quality lifestyle and deserved popularity of the Havana of those years, known even in Europe as the “Pearl of the Caribbean”.

It was during this period that Havana attracted intellectuals, businessmen, artists and lovers of an elegant lifestyle from all over the world. During this period Cuervo y Sobrinos distributed and sold the most important brands of clocks and watches in the world. The house achieved such levels of fame and exclusive refinement that the leading clock and watch manufacturers of the epoch engraved its name together with their own on the faces of the watches they sold, just like Tiffany in New York and Cartier in Paris, thus raising the name’s category to place it alongside that of the “creme” of the world’s best watch-makers, making it even more famous and sought after.

In their continuous search for mechanical perfection and the most beautiful forms and designs, following the taste and style of each period, which they gradually changed finally imposing their own, for many years Cuervo y Sobrinos continued to produce and sell watches that would be hallowed by a knowing and demanding public of world collectors, as examples of the most beautiful and refined watch-making craft.

It is not by chance that their watches have been classified as “classics” due to the elegant characteristics that have marked a style, capable of resisting the passing of time and changing fashions. Several of these watches have reached us today thanks to the passion of the collectors who seek out these models, regarded as being of great value thanks to the double brand, which affords them a guarantee and mark of singularity.

All of this resulted in Cuervo y Sobrinos being known, towards the end of the 1940s, as one of the most prestigious brands throughout the whole of America, with the boutique being an obligatory stopping place for some of the most illustrious visitors to Havana of that period. Einstein, Caruso, Churchill, Hemingway, Gable, Eleonora Duse, Neruda, all are names noted down by Cuervo y Sobrinos in its “golden book”, La Casa’s historic record.

Throughout more than 100 years of activity, Cuervo y Sobrinos have had the pleasure and honour of recording in their book the names of famous people from all walks of life: scientists, artists, writers and film stars, all different but all with one thing in common, an excellent lifestyle, thanks to their strong personalities, a taste for the beautiful things in life and the pleasure of possessing the most beautiful of objects that rise above fashion and common tastes, an unequivocal way of standing out from the crowd and exalting pleasure itself.

These characteristics have always distinguished the owners of our watches, just as, right from the beginning, Cuervo y Sobrinos has been following the path “towards a high standard of living”, as though their clients form a circle which, passing through different periods, unites them all by their similar desires and sets them apart in a class all of their own, way above anything else.

This watchmaker went out of business in 1959 following the revolution. It was revived in the late 90's or early 2000 when the brand was purchased and starting producing watches.

Clyde, I never tire of looking at your GMT. Love the Pepsi bezel. I got the Victorinox back in 96. It is quartz. I have worn it on construction sites. It's a workhorse.

Andrew, is that Victorinox a quartz or mechanical, btw?

That Victorinox reminds me of one I wore every day for a couple of years as a hard-use watch at work. Gave it to a buddy a year or so ago. Mine was a quartz model.

Hi Richard,

Yes, I ommitted to put in all the details...

Make: Ball-Record.
Date: Ca. 1956-57.
Model: 435C.
Jewelling: 21.
Pos.: 6.
Adj: Temp + Isoc.
Size: 16.
Set/Wind: Lever/Stem.
Case: 10kt gold-filled.

The Ball-Record 435C was the last model of railroad pocketwatch that cleared for service on the Canadian Pacific Railroad in the mid-20th century. This watch has a 24-hour dial because Canadian RR watches were required to have them, by law.

The system of train-organisation that depended on watches such as this was ended a few years later, so this is almost literally the last of its kind as far as railroad pocket-watches go. Every indication is that this watch was actually USED on the railroad (which makes it that much cooler to own!) and it keeps very good time.

Ball literally wrote the book on Railroad standards; that watch really was the end of an era.

I cherish my early 50s Hamilton 992B railroad watch. Those watches and their similar brethren like your late Ball RR watch were the ultimate working men's pocket watches.:thumbup1:

Hi Clyde,

Yes, my pocket-watch really was the end of an era. After the end of the '50s, which was when my watch was made, the old system of timetabling that required railroaders to carry super-accurate pocket-watches died out really fast. By the end of the '60s I think it was totally gone. Watchmakers like Hamilton and Ball stopped making railroad watches and soon, timepieces like the one I have were just another part of history.

And you're right, that really is a working man's watch. Everything about that pocket-watch was made for practicality. Even the patterning on the bezel and caseback was there for a reason, to make the caseback and bezel easier to unscrew. That watch has gone through quite a bit in its time. It's had one hand replaced (the minute hand, although you probably can't tell in the photo). It has two hairline cracks in the dial, and three or four miniscule chips on the very edges of the dial.

Also, the bow and the crown have quite considerable brassing on them, due to the thousands of times that watch would've been wound up over the years and all the scraping of the watch-chain, but I love that watch anyway.

It's a hell of a conversation-piece whenever I take it out to check the time!

Thanks for taking the time for the thoughtful reply. It is obviously a watch you like a good deal as well you should. It's magnificent!

I am always telling people that if they want a truly top quality watch and don't want to spend a ton of money, look at the vintage watches.

The railroad grade watches especially were amazing timekeepers and although quite utilitarian, they were the height of the watchmaker's state of the art in those days in terms of actual accuracy and timekeeping.

The same quality today in a mechanical watch would cost serious money. In addition to being great historical artifacts, the RR watches are also wonderful values.

Friday's with Jeans and a Western Shirt. - back story on this one.

This was my graduation present from college. My parents helped me a ton throughout school and when it came time to graduate, when asked what I wanted as a gift, I said there wasn't anyhting I wanted and thanks for helping. They prodded, because they wanted to get me something, too which I responded that I'd like the watch.

Most fathers I know have a top dresser drawer or bed side table filled with stuff. And as a kid that stuff is awesome. My dad had one filled with old pictures, signed baseballs, cool old coins and stamps; stuff collected throughout his life that made him him.

This watch was something I always remembered, but it had never worked. It was missing its face and would not wind and run. The wide leather strap had a folded up movie stub stuffed in it. I knew it would cost a little to get fixed and working again, but for some reason, it meant quite a bit to me.

After I replied with wanting this watch, my dad just looked at me and smiled as he walked away from the dinner table. He came back with a small yellow envelope containing the watch, fixed and running. There is a lot of "stuff" in my life, material things, and even though this isn't valuable in the sense of "holy crap vintage pricelessness" it is probably one of the single most important pieces of stuff in my life.

Cardstock, great watch and a great story. The best part is that you'll be able to pass both on to your son. I think every collection needs a Mickey watch. I own two, a classic Timex, and a rectangular gold Lorus dress Mickey. I haven't worn either in a few years, but you've inspired me to put a new battery in at least one of them the next time I'm at the jewellers. In my younger years, when I worked as a server in a restaurant, the Mickey watch was always a good conversation starter.

I wish I could claim a much more expensive watch, but unfortunately my new found passion for automatic watches coincided with my new "student" status at a local college, so it's automatics on a budget for me, hence this seiko 5.

Lame as it sounds, I got it because I liked that it had a canvas strap (much like Omega Speedmasters that I see from the moon picutures. I'm an astronomy buff and really want a Speedmaster) and it had very little gain/loss over a week. Plus it's an in-house movement vs. the Miyota I have in another watch.

PS: This is the first time seeing a Stowa and I am impressed. I may have to consider one if the funding ever allows...

Hey, that's rather reasonable if the watch is serviced and fully functional. I have been googling the web and the Ebay for similar Green and Purple horses. They seem to be more common than the Gold Horses? The Captain Cook looks real nice too...oh, dear. I am not getting another acquisition syndrome, am I?

Anywas, it seems the anchor in the watch logo is always in different position, but this is actually as it's meant to be? It rotates, and is some sort of movement indicator, isn't it? Nifty feature.

I will keep my eyes open, hope I may catch one some day. Seem to quite a few fakes and frankenwatches around (perhaps not more than usual though?) Can you folks recommend reliable vintage watch sellers on the web?

Nice find! I like those old "horse" series. I seem to understand that they were intended for the Asian market because the seahorse is a symbol of good fortune or something. They pose good value for money in today's market! I've nearly bought a few in my time but seahorses are difficult to catch and have always slipped through my fingers! :tongue_sm

The product page lists the model # as G100-1BV, but I just checked the box is has '2327' underneath it... So yeah! I thought it was the neatest looking one on the whole page of G-Shocks.

I've seen a lot your vintage Tissots lately... do you have any of current production Tissots? How do you find them? I have been thinking about something in the T-Sport line, but I am not sure how the quality stacks up given the low price tag.

That G-Shock is one of my favorites.

I only have vintage Tissots. They vintage watches have Omega movements. I mainly buy mine from antique stores and estate sales. The modern Tissots are mainly quartz. I have owned a modern Tissot but sold it. My ex-wife had a modern Tissot that lasted 5 years.

Yes can only be bought from timefactors who own the smiths brand.

The Smiths brand has played a major part in the history ofwatches from Great Britain and this particular watch is a modern take on the military issue Smiths W10 which is a legendary watch.

It is a watch that punches well above it's weight in terms of quality. It is beautifully put together and puts other much more expensive watches to shame. This is a prs-29a and was only released earlier this year. I believe the first production run was of 100 pieces (this one is also number 100!! :) )
