Beautiful watch and am considering buying that...but reading reviews on amazon, one comment in one of the reviews is a potential turn-off:
"The movement is smooth as silk and accuracy in the 1 month I've owned it has been excellent. It loses only 3-5 sec a day."

3-5 seconds a day? Anybody know if that's accurate? That's too much.

be wary of ebay mechanicals, a vintage watch in bad shape can turn quite quickly to a money pit.

I absolutely agree. That having been said, I picked up my first hand-winder there quite some time ago for about $20, and it has been flawless ever since. It's not fancy (a Sir Niles from France with date at 3 o'clock) but it keeps very accurate time and hasn't failed me yet.

I also cruise WatchUseek and the Timezone every so often just to see if there are any good deals for a casual guy like me. :blushing:

Thought i'd wear the 1965 Rolex today. Wearing it on a NATO strap is definitely cooler than on leather or the bracelet - it dresses it down somewhat! :tongue_sm

I really enjoy it. I travel a lot for work, so I especially like the modified slide rule and the dual time. I set the slide rule to the local exchange rate so a quick look at my watch tells me how much something costs in dollars. The dual time so I can keep track of what time it is back home.

This is what I've been wearing this week.

I don't take it out often as I'm paranoid about anything happening to it.

It belonged to my grandfather who had good taste in watches - and razors as it turns out. My mother found out I was DE shaving and gave me his unused gold plate Diplomat last week.

Happy day - I thought his razor (which I remembered as a kid) had been thrown out years ago.

Anyhow - I had this watch restored about 10 years ago - but the face was in good enough shape to be cleaned - so this watch is completely original and keeps great time..

Cheers

Now I know this group is into watches, too... I'm sure this newbie is going to feel right at home in this online community!

The past few days I've felt more colorful than anything... so I've been sporting this:

http://badgerandblade.com/gallery/displayimage.php?imageid=19957

My Dad bought this Accutron Spaceview 214 back in the early 60s. The original gold case was damaged, so I had it restored in a later 60s stainless case, with a period leather band.

cant go wrong with iwc (international watch company).:thumbup1:

most importantly, cant go wrong with an ingeniur,

this watch is part of a special group of watches designed to resist extreme electromagnetic conditions, the 4 most famous of this group are the Omega Railmaster, the Ball Watch Co Engineer, the Rolex Millgause and the IWC Ingenuir,

this is done by putting a faraday cage between the case and the movement to improve resistance to magnetic and electrical fields,

its an amazing watch and i would love to have one,

1953 Rolex Oyster Perpetual stainless and gold. It was a trade-in at a jewelry store when I purchased it for $250 in 1977. I've used it for daily wear ever since, and it's still accurate to about 15 seconds / month. I have it serviced every 3 - 4 years (and the servicing now costs significantly more than I paid for the watch).

Had a Duc - didn't do much for me. The dry clutch (to me) sounds awful and is incredibly stiff/heavy, they're unreliable, shockingly expensive to maintain and unless a touring model - remarkably uncomfortable to ride. Do they look amazing, and ride beautifully on the track? For sure, but for me, the shortcomings outweigh the benefits. My Ape is more comfortable, is much better at low-speed sharp turns (IE: canyon riding) is stone cold reliable (RSV's have an Austrian ROTAX built engine) is every bit as fast as a similar Ducati 999, and is more uncommon/unique. Not knockin' Ducati's (to each their own) but owning one is more of a hobby than riding one. I like bikes you gas, oil and ride the piss outta

The watch in question isn't a "Datejust" - apparently, the calendar function came in to being post-1953. Therefore, I'm of the opinion that "perpetual" refers to the self-winding.

My son has a much more recent self-winding gold and stainless Rolex - with the calendar function - and it, too, has the word "perpetual" on the face.

This a 1963 pie-pan face Omega automatic constellation, with a stainless and gold version of the characteristic beads of rice style band. This is my dear old departed Dad's old watch and it reminds me of the many happy times we had together. I kept it in a drawer for several years but when I finally decided to start wearing it and got it serviced, the jeweler, who was a vintage omega collector, was practically drooling over it. Anyway, it does not matter to me how much it is worth, I love this watch and would never sell it. By the way, it keeps great time.

That truly is a beautiful watch and the fact that it was your Dad's make it all the better. It is rare to find a 'beads of rice" band in decent condition these days. Most were replaced years ago. I can see why your jeweler was impressed. I am too.

This is from the Timezone web site's Rolex FAQ:

What does "Perpetual" mean?

"Perpetual" is Rolex's way of saying the watch is automatic or self-winding. Perpetual watches have a rotor in the back that rotates as you move your hand, and that rotor is geared down and winds the mainspring. See should I wind my watch for more info.

Texquill, I don't want to waste the band width re-posting your pic, but just had to say that '53 Oyster is a beauty.

In many ways, the Oyster Perpetual in its many iterations was the watch that first made Rolex's reputation back in the 30s and 40s for a tough, high quality watch.

I Love this Hemingway quote, circa 1948, from "Across The River and Into The Trees" that compares the human heart to the Oyster Perpetual :

"It's just a muscle. Only it is the main muscle. It works as perfectly as a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The trouble is you cannot send it to the Rolex representative when it goes wrong. When it stops, you just do not know the time. You're dead."

I love that Omega. It was obviously a presentation watch from United States Steel. Very cool.

Thanks Austin...it has an inscription on the back that says, "United States Steel would like to recognize ____ for his 40 years of service". And the best thing, its never been worn...not a scratch or blemish anywhere on the case, crystal or crown. I was scared to wear it today...but I'm wearing a suit and an overcoat today, so it has 3 sleeves of protection from the elements. :001_smile

This is a watch that Cortebert made for the Turkish Railway in the 1940's. It uses the famed 532 caliber movement which Cortebert also provided Rolex about the same time.

I don't know, I guess I get caught up in the mystique of Cortebert as being a high Caliber Railway watch and of course the exotic Turkish railroad.

Have been wearing this one all week, on many different band options. I have been taking an adventure into the movement, and regulating it myself. I got the watch for the purpose of doing this, and it has served me well. It is now at an accuracy of ~ +1-2 secs a day with mixed use at the office and home. When sitting off the wrist it gains ~ +2-4 secs a day, More than great for an affordable Seiko.

Thank you, sir.

It actually makes me smile just about every time I look at. It belonged to a Vietnam-era pilot originally, but unfortunately that's all I know about it.

Wonderful quality chronometer, too. The Rolex 15xx series movements were extremely well-made. I re-set the date two days ago and noted the time compared to the atomic clock, and since then it has stayed exactly fifteen seconds fast.

Not too shabby for a 43-year old watch. :thumbup1:

Great looking watch Andrew. I looked at their site - some great ETA-based watches at very reasonable prices - makes you wonder about the margins on some of the competition!
