So picked up this shave mug and brush stand from Dan at The Nashville Knife Shop, shipping was super fast and now I have a matching set except for the razor... also picked up a puck of Muehle Aloe soap as I read it was pretty good...
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n123/mjancsics/Stuff/RazorSet.jpg
Hopefully soon I can pick this up and then be done for a while:

thanks, I was torn over black or white but since I had gotten the black brush years ago as a gift it made things easier...and hopefully that new black brush isn't overly expensive as the other ones they sell are pretty spendy.

I picked up two new razors this past week.
The first was a Wostenholm with horn scales from Lynn & Don @ SRP. I just shaved with it this morning, and it melted the weekend growth away.
The second is a Bowdins hand made wedge from Maximilian @ SRP. I think this one is just a class act all the way. Max was a pleasure to deal with, and I already have a second razor ordered from him.
More pictures of the Bowdins can be found on his site:

No prob.
They replied with this the first time:
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your e-mail.
Although we have provided some samples in the past, these were
individually made by hand, as we do not hold sample-size stocks of our
products.
However, as a gesture of goodwill, as we have just fill some shaving
cream for sensitive skin, we can take a small amount and send you 2
small samples of this.
Please could you provide us with your postal address.
Kindest Regards,
Taylor of Old Bond Street

Not a huge score as I paid only a decent price on Ebay but I couldn't resist. Got it today and it cleaned up nicely. No plate loss, almost no scratches and really only one small water mark. The case has seen better days but the razor shines! Can't wait to try it out. Sorry for the lame picture, haven't mastered razor photography.

That's fantastic glennz, and quite rare.
Quite a few members just deal with the handle-cracks as long as they can still use the razor. It doesn't deter them from buying them since they are so commonplace.

what do you think, Dave?
a good deal?
the barrel of the razor [1930's Brit NEW from a Traveller No. 4 set - see photos above] seems to be white, not silver - I don't know if that is an artifact of the shreds of 75 year old cellophane the razor was wrapped in, or if it is some special finish - or if the razor just needs some polishing.
any ideas? I don't want to polish the finish off of it... and it is attractive even if it's not shiny gleaming...!

Part of this post is a lesson learned.
And here is the lesson;
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y225/_HandyMan/wrongtech.jpg
Don't hurry and buy something unless you're sure of what you've got. I didn't look at the razor because I always want razors with the boxes. Oh well. What I have here is what appears to be a 1979 Tech in a 1938-41 Tech box. Hopefully I've learned my lesson. Now I'll have to buy the proper razor to fit the box...even if the box is in somewhat bad condition.
On a lighter side, I also got this today; an unused Tech, 1942-ish.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y225/_HandyMan/redtechoutter.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y225/_HandyMan/redtechinside.jpg
This is the second unused Tech I've purchased. Maybe I will buy one without the case just so I can actually shave with one of these legendary razors.
Cheers.

Popped down the local Antiques fair for a mooch , came away with a couple of items i found tucked away at the back of one stall.

An F4 Fatboy , Razor is in great condition. Case was manky , but cleaned up well. Only flaw is its had something on it some point thats left a couple of marks on the clear plastic and the magnifier , Shame ... but im not going to moan for £5
http://amon.myby.co.uk/images/raz2.jpg
New type - not in such good condition , pretty tarnished , but no splits in the barrel and its serviceable. Payed £4 so i was happy with that.

I wasn't expecting this for another 4 days at least. The Virtual Village Silvertip badger brush.
Got two packages in the mail today.
The first one, from Proshave (http://www.proshave.dk/), contained a Merkur 38C and a case for a Merkur Progress:
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e259/Jakobeep/Vintage/Merkur_38C_01.jpg
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e259/Jakobeep/Vintage/Merkur_Case_01.jpg
The 38C is a beautiful razor! It is not untill you get to hold it you realize just how big and heavy this razor actually is. I am very much looking forward to trying it out tomorrow.
The Progress case I am planning to use as a travel case for my 34C. The razor fits in nicely. All Merkur razors should come in cases like this, instead of the cheap cardboard boxes.
The second package contained a vintage Sharpex DE blade stropper, with original box and paperwork, I picked up at an online auction. An interesting (display-) piece:

I got home today to find a package waiting for me...
Inside, a pinkwood-scaled 1/4 grind Le Grelot (same as B&B Le Grelot) from Martin @ Rasurpur.
I loooove it. Very sharp and shave-ready out of the box. It sleeps in a black leather Thiers-Issard sheath. Martin was a pleasure to buy from and was helpful through the entire process.
I'd post pics but it's very late and there's already a bunch of pics floating around.

Rooney 1/1 or Simpson's Special fits perfectly in the tube, as do Harris Shaving Sticks (removed from the twist-up). By some miracle the two little empty stirrups on the spine are perfect for cologne sample bottles. Going to throw a small glass bottle of splash in the larger empty stirrup and go.

Went out antiquing with the ladies(wife and daughter), and picked up a couple shavers. A Gem G-Bar, and a Gillette Old Type w/ the bulldog handle. Serial number on the bulldog starts with an "H", which seems to indicate 1918. Gem was $6.50, Bulldog was $9.85. Gonna go clean up the Gillette and see what I can make of it looks-wise. Any idea how old the Gem may be? Seems as though it's seen rare use, if any.
*EDIT*~ The serial number on the bulldog , after a bit of cleaning, clearly starts with an "N", so change the year to 1921. It does seems to have the lower profile 102 head, though.

Picked up the four pictured below today, for $10. (Sorry for the quality of the pics, just using a Canon PowerShot. With the exception of the Aristocrat Jr., they are silver in colour; Guess I need to work on the photo technique)
Left to right (in the pic of all four):
Canadian Gillette Old Type - handle with typical small crack, but stable. Handle a little beat up, but the cleanest comb and cap I've seen in person.
British Gillette '40s Aristocrat Jr. - Handle also a little beat up, but mechanics good and the silo doors in reasonable shape.
Gillette M 2 Slim Adjustable - in great shape, a little colour loss on the numbers, but otherwise very clean.
Gillette 1932 Thick Handled Tech - Also in great shape, a little plate loss just at the peaks at the edges of the cap.

I looked at Achim’s (Mr. Razor) site and found a similar shaving kit. The set I looked at had a Single Ring Razor. Is this the right razor for this set?

I really works great. I read that she may have a slightly larger version which I would recommend as the "cup" feels a little narrow (although I am able to whip up plenty of lather).

I love my dirtybird scuttle. But the custom work is a nice touch. Agree it could be a bit wider. I had to shave today with a bowl as I am out of town and it felt weird not having hot brush and lather the whole time.
Enjoy

Very nice! Do you lather in it or just keep your brush warm between passes?

I build the lather in the scuttle as well as use it to keep the lather and brush warm

Here is my other find for this week. It is a vintage case with shaving stick holder and a shaving brush that fits into its handle. I know that I am missing the blade holder and the proper razor for this kit. (It actually had a Blue Tip SS in the case when I purchased the kit)!
I looked at Achim’s (Mr. Razor) site and found a similar shaving kit. The set I looked at had a Single Ring Razor. Is this the right razor for this set?
Thanks!
-Steve
What are the brushes made of in these kits?

I agree that its not appropriate/somewhat rute to post in a thread solely for the purpose of promoting a BST sale - however, that' doesn't justify a rude response.
C'mon guys - let's act like gentlemen about this.

Mine seems to be silver plated. I can't tell if the brush is badger or boar. The bristles are fragile and it seems to shed a bit. I would not try to shave with it.

Lol...I don't think using it would be a good idea.
I was referring to the bristles though. Be interesting to find out.
Nice set.

I totally agree. This set is just a looker.
BTW, the shave soap holder has an almost complete shave stick still inside. I will have to remove the old shave soap and clean up the holder to prevent further damage to that container. I just may give that vintage shave stick a try for shaving.

I went with the 6-pack deal and got:

I purchased a standard scuttle several months ago but found it a bit too small for my larger brushes. I lathered in a large coffee mug which worked really well, so I asked Julie to make a scuttle with 4 3/4" inside diameter, 3" depth.
It just arrived today and works wonderfully! It literally swallows a Rooney 3/3 while keeping the lather warm.
Same price as the standard version. Doesn't get any better than this. Julie is wonderfully easy to work with.

I have one much like this I got at a thrift shop, mine is marked "Fuller Brush".
I think it's meant to hold soap and brush for face lathering.
I wonder why the ship motif is so popular on shaving mugs?

Because of the popularity of Old Spice? Personally, I wonder about this too. Maybe folks were convinced by the tag line "Aye, 'tis a manly scent!":001_smile

Wow, that is a scuttle I could actually use! Most of the "old style" scuttles have a brush/water opening too small for a nice badger brush. I think they were designed for straighter boar brushes with less bloom. It looks like these versions you two have could easily swallow a decent knot size of bloomed badger hair.

They are both pretty neat.
The few antique stores left around my place don't have neat stuff like that. :thumbup1:
I'd have to actually see and hold one though to be able to tell if they'd be usable with my brush, etc.
Nice pieces though.
Cheers.

If he's a re-enactor, go to a craft fair and find a tinsmith who can make / has made a tin cup of appropriate size to be a shaving mug. Tin cups are great for re-enactors from the Revolutionary period up through, say, WWI.
Any reputable trophy shop can engrave whatever you want, too.

Good advice from everyone so far...May I suggest, if he's a ww2 guy, perhaps one of those steel canteen holders, or a messkit cup? What era does he portray?
