Awesome review, Howard. You have a knack for these things, I think. I want to like the Knize more than I do, but I find it too overpowering regardless of how I apply it.

That cuts it. I HAVE to get ahold of Scotto and get a decant of this stuff. The fact that everyone actually gets a LEATHER note from this scent is the clincher. I've been wanting to try it for a good while now and this really puts it over the edge for me. These stuffy old mature and formal scents are right up my alley. I guess it's one benefit of being over 40. You can pull this stuff off. Even if your normal attire is not business or formal. A bonus is that my my cute little wife really likes these scents on me so what's to lose?

It's a fine, fine line with this scent. Think of it as a continuous function. Somewhere between "I can't smell it at all!" and "Oh no, I've overdone it again!" is the perfect balance. This one ramps up so fast that it's tricky to find that perfect balance.
But it's worth the effort.

Todd,
You and I are fortunate. I also have a cute little (5' 3") wife who likes the "stuffy" scents. My wife even likes Blenheim Bouquet. What's cooler than a beautiful gal who understands the attractions of old leather books, aged tobacco, and worn leather saddles?
Nicely done Howard! I wear this cologne all year and have repeatedly been told it matches my personality, whatever that means. This replaced Creed's Bois du Portugal as my over all favorite fragrance.

Howard that is awesome. My wife is also 5'3" and as cute as a bug. Think Leah Remini from King of Queens. They are not identical looking but have the same hair colour and large brown eyes and wears size 3. Um yeah, fellas. She's CUTE. She also likes these classic colognes on me. She loved the Floris #89, Eucris, and BB 1818. So yes, I'm keeping her.

FWIW, I do not get leather from this scent. Pity, as I'm a huge fan of leather scents and the staying power of Knize Ten is awesome.

This scent is atrocious to me. I caution anyone considering this scent to get a sample first before you make a purchase.

Knize Ten contains castoreum. I'm not sure many other modern perfumes are using this. I may be wrong.
I wonder if the castoreum could account for both the longevity and the varied reactions of different people to this fragrance?
Some notes people report perceiving, like a rubber smell, I don't get at all. However, multiple people report it, so I think the perceptions of this fragrance differ widely.

Howard, my take on the scent is my personal experience. That is why I recommend that gents try first before they buy. This is a classic scent. Scents react differently on gentlemen. Some good and some bad.

All I smell is one of those plastic fishing lures whenever I smell this scent. :prrr: I hate it, but wonder if I am putting it on too heavy; I've got it in a sample vial only.
I have an uncle who wore only this for many years,he has passed away and I never gave it another thought till I saw it in the B&B decant club.
The first time I used it I almost vomited, I burn off fragrance very quickly so as a rule I have a heavy hand, after reading a review on another board the comments of strength and longevity I tried it again and realized how little I need. The experience was night and day. Feed back from friends and family have been more than positive. My aunt broke into tears when I walked past her at a family event.
It always amazes me how subjective a scent can be and how variable from person to person,my wife and her sisters often all use the same fragrance and how different it smells on each one is a wonder.

I have changed my mind on this scent. When I first used it awhile back, I couldn't stand it. It literally almost made me sick.
Yesterday I applied a very small amount, being careful to just barely press down on the spraytop enough to get a very, very light spray. I have to say, that did the trick. I enjoyed it all day long. Of course, the scent was a tad light, but a full spray is an absolute a no-no, at least for me.

Just reading up on scents, the Knize Ten has piqued my interest. This auction (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Knize-Ten-for-men-by-Knize-EDT-10ml-Decant-Sample_W0QQitemZ120033411151QQihZ002QQcategoryZ118 46QQcmdZViewItem) for a decant has cropped up. Is it advisable to pick it up at this price? Am I likely to get what I pay for?
Any help appreciated.

That price seems excessive for what you will receive. If you are in the US, I just bought a 125ml bottle (4.2 oz) of the EDT for $75.00 from Colonial Drug in Cambridge, MA. I phoned in the order and the next day UPS delivered it. If I am reading the eBay price right, it is going for 11.99 British Pounds for 10 ml. Then you need to factor in shipping will will add even more.
I'd suggest buying from Colonial and if the scent disagrees with you, someone will surely take it off your hands if you put it out here. As far as the EDT goes, I LOVE it and no one that has 'sniffed me' has had anything but positive feedback.

I was just browsing at the perfumebay.com website which I do from time to time. They are now carrying Knize Ten in several sizes and strengths. I believe I have read some have had trouble sourcing this in the U.S. I have ordered from them several times in the past and never had any problems. Very quick delivery as well.

I love this stuff. That said, I can see how it could be unpleasant for some chaps ... it's definitely got an edge to it. So you may want to start with a small bottle ... you can get 1 ounce here: http://www.beautifulperfumes.com/brands-k-knize-knize-ten-by-knize-for-men.html for $18 (and a shave soap puck for $20!)
IF you love Blenheim Bouquet and Dunhill for men (1934) you will probably love this stuff too. If perfection for you is Burberry London or L'Occitaine Eaux de Beux, you may want to proceed with caution.

A lovely scent. I favour it more when I'm wearing shirts and ties, but any cooler day can have me reaching for it.
But yes, try before you buy. Definitely. Also definitely use a little bit, and don't let the initial smell of it turn you off, see how it works with your body chemistry.

After reading about K10 here and on basenotes, and looking for it on the internet and here in NY at Bergdorf and not finding it, I finally got a bottle. I love it. Strawberry, camphor, and the aroma that, in fragrances, we have come to identify as leather (iso butyl quinoline) though, for my nose, it smells nothing like actual leather. My wife found it disgusting and said it smelled "like an animal." But my wife doesn't like fragrance. I do, and find K10 fairly uncomplicated. Sweet, powdery, with the "virtual leather" smell, and then after about an hour, sweet and powdery. I might be influenced, probably am, by the history of this and the fact that it's the last of its kind. It makes me feel like I entered a time warp and I'm wearing a scent from an era when men wore black tie to go to the diner. I wish it were still being distributed in the US. Maybe someone will come along and start distributing it again. It's like wearing a piece of history

Colonial Drug has it, I bought a large bottle just this past March. Contact them by phone or e-mail. They are listed in the shopping links section. They are very nice to deal with. I called in, they send me the bottle and with it comes the bill, then you send them a check back - like in the old days - TRUST! They do not take credit cards.

I'm on the road this week, and got a chance to stop by Colonial Drug today. What a great store! Joseph was very helpful and patient. I tried the Knize 10, had him set a bottle back for me, but changed my mind at the last minute. To me, it's just such a strong, powerful blast, and I wasn't sure I liked it or would grow to like it. I sprayed a heavy shot in my palm (probably too much, or too concentrated) and it smelled like I had leaned over the edge of a large, deep, musky earthen well where someone had dumped a lot of very old leather and left it there for a long time. I know that sounds bad, but it didn't smell BAD, just very strong, like overpowering! I just wasn't sure, but now I'm thinking if I have a chance, I may try to go back there before I leave town and get a bottle and give it more time. I liked English Leather as a teenager, but this is something completely in a different league! I definitely didn't smell anything sweet or powdery! But now I'm even more curious than ever....if I do get it to try a little longer, it may end up on B/S/T!

Well, Gents, I did go back to Colonial Drug today, and JB remembered me from yesterday. Very nice man. He did say several B&Br's have been in to see him. And yes, I did pick up the Knize Ten. I know I would have fretted for a long time, asking myself "why didn't you just pick some up when you had the chance?" I also know that, while there are some things I like immediately but quickly grow tired of, there are some things that I may not be immediately enamored with, but those are sometimes the things I grow to like the most and the longest, like certain music, foods, beverages, etc., and I just think that Knize Ten may be one of those things. I did give it a much gentler application today, and it gives it a much different personality than what I experienced from the blast I tried yesterday.
By the way, I appreciate all the reviews in the Review Forum, and comments here in this Forum that so many of you provide on fragrances, both positive and otherwise. It's good to get so many different perspectives, and they are most helpful.

Randy/Jakespoppy,
I think you will be happy you went for the K 10. It clearly has you in its grasp. I do not think I tend to personify any other scents, but this one seems like a living being. Even if you do not wear it that often, I do not think you will ever want to sell it although that would would be easy, too. I enjoy that assault, too, by the way.
I enjoyed your descriptions, too. Really well-done, evocative.
Enjoy!

Thank you both, Nid Hog and cstrother for your kind comments. I agree, the initial assault, while surprising at first and now something to look forward to, does retreat somewhat and settles into a more subdued fregrance that will be pleasant throughout the day. I won't be selling this! I think this will be one to look forward to occasionally, with just enough time in between to look forward to the next round.

Nope, I'm still using mine. I didn't really use it much this summer (in part because I was away for a couple of months) and maybe in part because it doesn't jump out at me when it's brutally hot. As soon as it started to cool off again, it was back into my rotation. I'm thinking about picking up some of the soap too, although I really don't need it.

......Anyone drop K10 after your purchase?
On the contrary, I've not only grown to really enjoy K10, I've also found myself looking for and sampling other frags that either include an animalic note or a black tarry note, or have a similar type initial olfactory assault like K10. These have included frags like Chanel Antaeus, C&S #88, Givenchy Gentleman, Caron Yatagan, C&S Cuba, and Guerlain Jicky. I enjoy variety, and still enjoy the "tamer" frags like for example Tam Dao and Brooks Bros 1818, but the "wilder" frags are good in the right time and place, and K10 is definitely in this category.
K10 is a good example of why I like reading what people smell in a frag even more than whether they like it or not. It's helpful to know if it's polarizing as that helps understand it, but it really helps to know what it smells like, since every scent is liked by some and disliked by others.

I love strong masculine "old world" scents. Not many folks can pull it off but I always get complemented on them. My wife gives me a hard time if the scent isn't "musky" or "manly" enough. But K10 is a favorite of my wife but I always worry about scents I can smell all day and not get the same "love" from it.
I really think it's my body chemistry with K10.

I almost finished a decant of K10, but I guess it still has to grow a little on me. I like it and it is without a doubt a classy scent, but it doesn't awe me in a positive way like K2 did, or in a bestranged way like K Sec did (maybe because I'm not familiar with incense fragrances), or in a green way like K Forest did. Also, I find the longevity of K10 is not so impressive as I anticipated (maybe this has to do with the fact that it is reformulized) - it lasts only for about 4 hours on me.

I've probably mentioned this before, perhaps in this thread, but Knize Ten was not love at first smell for me. I kept trying it and putting it away, dusting it off and trying it again (it was a blind buy). Once I could smell more than the powder, I was hooked.
Wow, I quoted a lot. lol
"Yes", you "did".

For me, English Fern was the "meh at first sniff" scent I eventually came to love. Actually, IIRC, it was "bathroom cleanser at first sniff" ... someone can search the old posts to see what I actually said, but it wasn't complimentary. Eventually I came around to it and now love it.
K-10 I just loved from the get-go. :thumbup1:
