I have been enjoying QED's Mocha-Java shaving stick so much that this morning I tried a little experiment: I picked up an unused puck of Honeybee Sue's shea butter shaving soap and rubbed it against the grain of my wet beard as though it were a shaving stick. I then lathered up on my face and shaved.
It worked like a charm, though the stick format is a little easier than holding just a puck of soap. But rubbing the soap directly into the wet beard really does seem to soften it, and of course building the lather right requires some vigorous brushwork (especially to make sure that all the water in the brush is mixed into the lather, and that you have enough lather in the brush for later passes). So that helps as well.
