Currently use Thayers after I shave and then just put a little baxter oil free lotion on if I my skin is dry. This works well but I have always been curious about aftershaves. My problem is that I have sensitive skin and break out with pimples if I am not careful what I use. Years ago I used Nivea sensitive skin balm but i thought it was ok. It left my face greasy even if I used just a small amount. I also have tried classics such as old spice or aqua velva. Those left my face sticky/greasy also. I hope to find something light and won't leave my skin dry or greasy. Aftershave splash or balm is what I am looking for.
Questions:
1) Should I use and aftershave?
2) How would it benefit me?
3) What do you recommend?

with the number of times you referenced greasy, it sounds to me like you might have oily skin. so id recommend a good alcohol splash.
and of course give this link (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=12205) a good read through.

based on the number of posts I see. If you had to pick a cologne/fragrance that smells similar to Speick what would it be? Just so I know what to expect as far as scent.
Also what really makes Speick that good or better than a $5 splash aftershave from the drugstore?

I read this when I first joined but forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder.

Not sure. I think it has a lot of good botanicals in it that drugstore stuff doesn't.
I can tell you this, and you can take it or leave it - it's anecdotal, so it's definitely not good science I am on immunosuppressors since I had a transplant. They make me susceptible to acne (among other stuff). I have tried several kinds of aftershaves, not with any mind to clearing the acne, but just to try them. One day after using Speick for a while I realized my face was clear and had BEEN clear for a while. I switched to Musgo - acne came back. Back to Speick, acne goes away. Trumpers Limes - acne is back (that stuff was NOT cheap!!!! But OMG, I love it!). Speick, gone. Saint Charles Shave - back. Speick, gone, Boosters, back.
You get the idea.
I can use the others, no question. But not long term. As an occasional treat. I love the Trumpers lime and SCS Mediterranean splash (Yum), And of course Musgo. But I can't use them every day. Only Speick keeps my face clear.
This is I suspect a very YMMV thing. But for me, Speick is the stuff that works.

Ogallala bay Rum Splash, highly recommended and inexpensive
Alt Inssbruck AS Splash, highly recommended
I love Provence Sante Green Tea AS Splash but I don't know if the extra moisturizing properties will do more harm than good on your skin type.
Wesley & Scott ASBs are awesome, my fav. is the Clove and Peppermint

I always end my shave with a nice aftershave which usually contains alcohol. I find these splashes take care of razor burn better than balms.
While my skin is oily, I find it very beneficial to moisturize my skin with carrier oils such as: camellia oil, kukiu nut oil, argan oil, and marula oil. These oils are very light and quickly absorb, leaving my face balance and extremely soft. These oils don't clog my pores like other moisturizers do.

That's very interesting. Maybe its the alum in speick which you find beneficial as none the other aftershaves you mention contain it.
Speick really is an excellent aftershave. I find it to be more healing and soothing than mostly any other splash.

+1 Speick AS is really great stuff. I would give it a try and if it doesn't work for you I am sure you could unload it on here in no time.
Cheers,
David

I like the Boss XY, and Calvin Klein Escape, both alcohol splashes. They are a bit expensive though, 40-50€ per bottle, but it does last a long time.

If I want something that will not dry me out and give me mild moisturization. I also need something that will not clog my pores or break me out. Also any cheaper options?
A good trick for the Nivea sensitive balm is to add a couple drops of water to a small amount of it in your palm. Then mix it up and put it on your face. Shouldn't result in any greasiness. I have sensitive skin and use Thayer's, then top it off with a small amount of Nivea sensitive. Sometimes I use a bit more of the Nivea in the winter, or use acne.org moisturizer as an aftershave instead. Right now Body Shop has the old-style (NOT the Maca Root) "Razor Relief" on sale so you may want to give it a shot. I bought some, but haven't tried it yet.
Most alc. based aftershaves are just alcohol, fragrance, and a little bit of glycerin. Sometimes they will have a small amount of aloe or vitamin e. I'm avoiding Speick b/c it contains lavender oil, which can irritant sensitive skin. I know lots of guys like these alc. based splashes, but I'm not very fond of them. Boosters was pretty good I thought, but still dried out my skin a little more than I liked, even when applying balm afterwards. YMMV.
If you are concerned about "pore clogging" check the ingredients. There are tons of lists online w/ lists of comedogenic (pore clogging) ingredients. I would avoid anything with large amounts of comedogenic ingredients.

I would use a mild aftershave splash without a high alcohol content. DR Harris Pink is a good one but it is pricey. One that I found was very similar in performance is Burt's Bees Rosewater and Glycerin Toner. It has Witch Hazel, Aloe, Rosewater, some other goodies and a little alcohol.

I'd give the Skindicinal ASB from Em's Place a try. I find there is more substance to it (it doesn't disappear before your hand meets your face) but it isn't too heavy either. Different sizes and ASB options available too. emsplace.com.

Anthony Logistics ASB. It's not greasy or oily at all. It's got a lot of goodies for your skin and has a slight cooling effect. The scent is a very very mild peppermint that fades quickly and won't interfere with your edts.
