View Full Version : Application Question

So I'm just getting into the cologne thing and prefer to apply with an atomizer. I was wondering how others applied it this way (one squirt on upper chest, one where else?) Any ideas?
Also how long do you figure a 10ml sample of a cologne will last. I got a sample of LP9 from Scotto and really like it. I'm thinking I might buy a decant of it from the club but if it is discontinued and 10ml won't last me very long, I'll probably spring for a bottle.
Thanks,
John

I put on my shirt, then put the bottle under it and give one squirt to the patch of hair between my nips. That way it keeps my bathroom from reeking of cologne because the shirt catches any overspray, and none is wasted. The shirt will also absorbe a little and help get the scent out there.
I don't spray anywhere else because I'm a less is more kinda guy. And that way when someone gets close to you your cologne is a pleasant surprise, instead of something they smelled ten feet away. Just the other day a female friend gave me a hug and said "Mmmmh... you smell like.... MAN! What is that?" (heh, go B&B cologne ).
I can't help you on how long it will last, I just started wearing it myself too.

I spray my upper chest, and occasionally my arms.
I tested the 8mL atomizers I sell, and they are 70 sprays. If you know how many sprays you use at a time, you can tell how many wearings you'll get out of the decant.

Does anybody use more than one spray? I've been experimenting with 2 sprays, and I can't really tell a difference in lasting power or what the scent's "radius" is (except for B&B, damn that stuff lasts with one small spritz). I usually apply cologne to my upper chest / lower neck area right before I put my undershirt on. Scents seem to fade on me, especially C&E Sandalwood... and do I love C&E Sandalwood.

I normally fire one spray so that it hits my upper chest and the lower part of my throat.

I would think the number of sprays, etc. depends on the cologne. For example, I'm pretty liberal with the Floris Sandalwood because its very low key. The Trumper Sandalwood, on the other hand gets about a half a spray because its "loud".

I spray one wrist and rub it against my opposite wrist. They I spray on my neck. Also another good one is to hold it up about waist level spray it straight up into the air and walk through the mist. It gives wide light coverage. I've heard many women like it this way.

Anytime you use a new fragrance, you should "road test" it, i.e., try it on a weekend at home. Every fragrance is different on every individual, and there is nothing worse than being able to "taste" someone's cologne from 50 feet away. You know what I'm talking about...the little old lady that buys the 55 gallon drums of dollar perfume and then bathes in it.

You just reminded me of a commercail a while back. I dont remember what it was for, but it had scenes of guys doing not too manly things. One in paticular was of a very manly man spraying cologne in the air, shutting his eyes and walking through the mist. It was pretty darn funny. Too bad I cant remember what it was for...

I normally do about a half-spritz, I don't push it down all the way, sort of down and behind from my ears. thus two small spritzes.

I start my cologne application by climbing up onto the roof of my house, and jumping off at an angle and trajectory which will cause me to land on my front walk. I do this dressed from the waist down but unencumbered by any clothing from the waist up. In preparation for the application, I have placed the cologne on the front walk sitting at an angle on a popsicle stick which has been propped up on a piece of white quartz 1/2 inch in diameter, which is positioned as a fulcrum. While I am in flight descending rapidly toward the front walk, I blow an air horn which I have positioned in my right hand. The air horn startles my dog, scruffyd, who has been let loose in the front yard previously. Scruffyd then races across the walk at a predetermined angle, stepping on the popsicle stick and sending the bottle of Penhaligon English Fern cologne hurtling into the air. The cologne has been fitted with a motion sensitive compressed air actuator, which electonically releases compressed air into the bottle and causes the cologne to be release into the air at approximately 11.5 feet in the air, causing a suspended cloud of said olifactant to persist for exactly 1.2 seconds. I descend through the cloud at 19.2 miler per hour, and land on a prepositioned foam stunt pad, rolling to my feet at my front door. The cologne elegantly descends from its flight due to its custom automatically actuated union jack parachute.
I then go back in the house, put my shirt and tie on, and say my goodbyes to my wife.
This procedure works great, except when my wife says, "Honey, I can barely smell your cologne-- you should have applied a little more"
(!)
Sincerely,
Vin
PS
I am as perplexed as you as to the best way to apply the stuff, and welcome the advisements listed here.

Depends a lot on the cologne. Most top shelf stuff, one to two spritzes does the trick. With lower end stuff I sometimes use up to four spritzes. Chest and arms are the preferred targets for me. If one spritz, then just the chest, if more I might do chest and arms. If four spritzes, then Upper Chest, Lower Chest, and both arms. Of course, if its an aftershave cologne, then primarily face and neck.
