View Full Version : Vestiges of A Failed Wetshave

Wetshaving has been quite the adventure, quickly becoming the road less travelled. I decided to take the leap not because I was in pursuit of the perfect shave but, I thought it would be less expensive than the quotidian cartridge & goo shave.... how naive. Brushes, blades, soaps, creams, ASBs, scuttles and 25 minute shave rituals... what did I get myself into? Why do so many people come together in this lively forum to discuss shaving? Does the end justify the means?

Well that's just something you have to decide for yourself. As for me, I use a Merkur 38C and thus far, love the feel of a new Derby in it. Why then a failed wetshave? I failed because I had the wrong objective, I was looking to save money and what I found was the perfect shave. Thanks B&B.

Very good post!

You know, when I started, I knew it was going to be expensive as hell. I think the main reason i wet shave is for the nostalgia of it. I mean I didn't get bad shaves with a cartridge razor but I do get much better shaves with DE. From beginning of prep until I out AS on and Pinaud mustache wax takes about 30 minutes. This is the absolute most relaxing 30 minutes of my day.

Welcome to B&B!!! Glad to have you here!

Yep, I found B&B looking for a place to get back into wet shaving. Save the environment with less cartridges and cans of goo for the landfills, save my wallet given that you have to take out a mortgage to buy a pack of Fusion blades at Costco, but mostly for the nostalgia, for the ritual. I love nothing more than taking boring, simple and mundane tasks and making them into rituals of self-indulgence that I look forward to on a daily basis.

This thread (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=51152) does a great job summing up the reasons I came here. And I do agree with "so much for the saving money factor." :tongue_sm

It could be as expensive or inexpensive as you wish. Hobnobbing with other "shave geeks" will definitely pique your curiosity and desire for products, so it will become expensive. You could easily buy a razor, 100 astra blades for $11, a $5 VDH boar brush, and a $10 tube of Bigelow's Proraso cream and be set for about about two years. Now that's VERY INEXPENSIVE! But if you get sucked into the luxury of the DE shaving....

The justification for my first razor was to save money on expensive cartridges!:lol::lol::lol:

Welcome to your new life of acquisition attitude, lather lingo, and brushy beatitude!

Nice post! You can really save money with traditional wetshaving if you approach it at the functional level and don't turn it into a hobby.

There no saving when something is your hobby - it turns into an expense. But if you don't go hog wild buying brushes, razors and more soaps/creams/aftershaves than you can possibly use in your lifetime then yes, you do spend less money compared to the cartridge shaving solutions currently used by the masses.

That is why I am making a conscious effort to avoid hanging out too much here - I already have plenty of things I'm obsessive over (<3 engineering) and adding shaving to the mix would be excessive :S
