Simple question for those who have tried both. Which do you prefer? I've only ever used creams but I have some Mama Bear's Lavender coming my way and as most of you know, that's a glycerin-based soap. I plan on trying Tabac in the near future too.

There's no contest IMHO. Tallow/Triple-Milled wins by a knockout.

IMO both have their merits and I like using both.

I'm fighting to get irritation-free shaves with glycerins right now. I'm sure it's my lathering process to blame as too many folks seem to be getting great shaves with glycerins for them to be crap.

I get fabulous shaves with tallows (I like them even more than the non-tallow triples) but the lather building process seems to be different for glycerins and tallows.

I had some failed experiments of melted glycerin soaps that I'd added EO to around.

Don't want to shave with them (smell like chewing gum), but they are fine for hand washing, so they still get used.

What about Stearic Acid based soaps (e.g. - Proraso)?
I'll say glycerin, 'cause I use HoneyBee Spa soaps most often.

But not all glycerin soaps are created equal. One can get decidedly different formulations. Some I'm fond of, others less so.

I'm a big fan of tallow soaps now. I initially had difficulty learning how to use Tabac. Took a couple trial and error moments but I got it. The trick for me was soaking the puck in more water and getting more soap on the brush. After I did that the brush exploded with later after about 10 circles in the bowl. Whoa! I love my Tabac now and don't want to try anything else. I anticipate that my creams will be sitting dormant for a while.

If it isn't tallow the lather can be shallow

So if you're usin glycerin, you're sayin that the lather's thin? :tongue_sm

I'd rather smear my face with plants
than any other rendered fats.

I love my Mama Bears, and am looking forward to the two HBS pucks I've got on the way, but Tabac is by far my favourite soap - so tallow it is.

Does Arko qualify as a Tallow based soap even though it has glycerin in it?

Speaking of which, what determines what its based on if it contains both ingredients?

Also I've noticed the glycerin based soaps have a smoother texture (before lathering) than a Tallow based (I'm thinking MWF, correct me if I'm wrong here)

Anyways, a soap seems great for the winter for me because I get to use a ton of oil, on top of which I can lather a soap like Williams, and enjoy slickness that's out of this world without the irritation soaps usually provide if you have sensitive skin.

Well, triple-milled is actually a manufacturing process which creates soaps that are solid and create a very rich, creamy lather. The glycerin soaps are made from a glycerin base however, triple-milled can have glycerin added to it, which will provide added benefits to the soap.

In terms of tallow, well this more relates to the base of the triple-milled soap. Tallow is animal product but some milled soap manufacturers have switched to vegetable based. e.g. vegans would use a veg based triple-milled soap as opposed to tallow.

From the soaps I have used in the past, triple-milled were a LOT better. Much longer lasting and a very dense and creamy lather.

Both! Because variety is the (old) spice of life!

No question really. If more people made tallow/milled soaps there would be precious little market left for the glycerin soap crowd.

The instant T-Rex top of the food chain solution would be a soap that performed like tallow and held scent like glycerin.

I am very happy with Susie's Glycerin soaps - but admit to having never tried tallow. Anyone wanta send me a sample?

This thread is timely, because tonight I was practicing my lather-making ability with my different soaps. As a newb, I am having some issues with consistently getting a good lather with some soaps. I did notice however that my AOS Sandalwood and my C&E Nomad produce a superior, creamy, and very slick lather to some of my other soaps.

Are these glycerin based or triple milled?

This is what I've got so far...
AoS Sandalwood-???
C&E Nomad-???
Col. Conk's (all varieties)-glycerin
VanDer Hagen-glycerin
Ogallala Bay Rum (all varieties)-glycerin

I loves the tallow and hard-milled soaps to be sure. Their performance is nonpareil, but there are some glycerin/vegetable based soaps that I will always have and use frequently; e.g. QED.

Let's put it this way; when I checked my little collection I found about 250 grams of glycerine based soaps and in total just over 3 kilograms of tallow based soaps....

both AOS and C&E are triple milled.

Thanks! That makes sense, since I had a NOTICEABLE difference in their lather. Very slick stuff :biggrin::biggrin:.

IMO tallow produces a creamier lather; gliceryn is more should we say airier
