...I will still be in good shape. Last day of vacation hit some antiques stores and found a G# Fatboy in great shape, with box [my birth quarter even!] a Valet Autostrop box with blades and a Gillette Diplomat that was so covered in old soap I wasn't sure if it was gold or brass! All for $25! The Diplomat cleaned up gorgeous as did the Fatboy, can't wait to use 'em!

The handle would be completely knurled on a Diplomat. Yours looks like it has the bottom band w/o knurling which should put it at about 48-50. I am not positive, but I think that all Diplomats have a date code.

My large scuttle from schwarzweisskeramik is very heavy and nowadays I primarily do face lathering. This brush scuttle from Dirty Bird should keep my brush nice and warm. Just like the other scuttle, but that one was really big on my sink if I only use it to warm the brush.

Being new to this sport, I had no idea what the various creams and soaps smelled like. To solve this enormous dilemma, and to avoid smelling like an octogenarian, I took a day trip to London, and found myself in Taylor of Old Bond Street. After an extended session of rubbing brushes and smelling soaps, I came out with a new best badger brush and a pot of 'shaving shop' shaving cream. I then made my way to the Crabtree & Evelyn shop, and got a tube of Nomad cream from them. I bought the bowl for a quid from a local place.

http://dalplatinum.com/sa/thumbs/7664christmas 011.jpg ('http://dalplatinum.com/sa/viewer.php?id=7664christmas 011.jpg') (click for bigger)

I also caught a nice find at a local antique shop. I was walking past as the guy opened up one morning, and asked if he had any DE razors, and he said he had one in the shop. I took a look, and it looked like this

http://dalplatinum.com/sa/thumbs/6427newrazor007.jpg ('http://dalplatinum.com/sa/viewer.php?id=6427newrazor007.jpg')(click for bigger)

He asked for £15, so I paid it and made my way home.

I had no idea what it was, nor even what metal it was made of. After a quick trip to the internet and a hardware shop, a tub of Silvo, and a quick blast in an ultrasonic jewelery cleaner, it now looks like this

http://dalplatinum.com/sa/thumbs/7480newer-razor-010.jpg ('http://dalplatinum.com/sa/viewer.php?id=7480newer-razor-010.jpg')(click for bigger)

A nice result there. It turned out to be a silver plate 1920's Gillette Bostonian. I have no way of knowing the exact year though. It shaves very nicely, although I only have a cheap Wilkinson Sword DE to compare it to, so I'm not sure if I'll be using it or displaying it yet. The guy in the antique shop said he had a couple more, including one that his father used to use, so I might get those too, and see if I can clean them up nicely and sell or trade them. This one I will most likely keep though, as I find it rather swish, and the box with the lifting platform impresses me no end.

Note: This haul is from a week ago, but my account only cleared today. mail me a slap in the face if I put this in the wrong thread.

Here's an interesting one...A very old barber's box. It's made from wood (possibly cedar) wrapped in leather, with red satin lining. The seller told me that it was from the 1820s-1830s, but I can't be sure. It's definitely from the 19th century, though. The insert is a mirror (unfortunately cracked) with leather backing that says "Jos Rogers Cutlers to His Majesty" on it.

My spouse has the camera, so I'll just narrate. Second week shaving with a DE and have added the following:

Taylor of OBS Rose Cream
Proraso Cream (heard there's a bit of a difference between this and the Bigelow I'm using)
Proraso Dopobarba Liquid Cream After Shave

I'm really excited about the rose cream and am going to take it (along with the Bigelow) with me on my interview trip today. I figure it'll be a relaxing way to decompress after a 4 hour drive.

1. Silver American Button Company. Serial number from 1911. Shined up nicely. My poor picture does not give the razor justice. A steal at $3.

2. Unknown Gillette TTO. Date code of Y-3. Looks like an experiment with placing a different head and knob on another handle barrel. A "unique" look!

It came in today. I'm so very excited. It is so very wonderful... soft, firm, pretty. This is my second brush after a C&E BBB and it is *very* different.

Tomorrow's shave is going to be a great one!

I also got a NEW for 8 bucks including shipping from the bay. Has the crack in the handle and needs one hell of a good cleaning. This will be a project for the weekend.

Was pleaseantly surprised to find these in my mailbox a couple of days ago. The vintage Wrisley was generously supplied by letterk (John). The samples were also graciously provided by fellow contributor, Dustbow. Thank you very much fellas.:a14:

Interestingly, I've found the wrisley (which I love:001_tt1:) to have a scent similar to spanish floid (which I have not cared for in the past:frown2:). After wearing the Wrisley for a day (yes, the scent lasts), I decided to re-try some Floid that I had given to my son. Surprisingly, I now find the Floid quite enjoyable...strange:confused:

This was 1/2 of a $10 ebay haul. The other half of the auction is a Durham Duplex with original box and papers in very good condition. I'm not big on it, but it was part of the deal, so....

So...the 6/8 wedge(?). I don't know if it's a true wedge (maybe someone can help) but it looks like the sides are pretty flat to me. The spine and edge have a matching smile. Minimal hone wear. No scratches. One booger-like spot on the blade that should be able to come off. Smallest bit of rust one one side at pivot. Scales are black but I can't tell if it's plastic or ebony. There is a fine, fine grain to it, but it may just be a coating on the plastic. The pins are nice and tight, and the blade centers perfectly.

Stamp on tang reads "B. Daffin" 'Baltimore."

I polished it up with MAAS, Brasso, and some chromium oxide paste+additional powder, and it looks niiiiiiiice.

I taped the spine, took it to a cheapo hone then progressed to 15micron film, then 5, then chrom-ox pasted paddle, then to Tony Miller Red Latigo heirloom strop.

It shaves sooooo nicely. It's a hefty blade and it feels a little different from my other straights but it went thru whiskers like butta.

Not bad for $10. I know I'm happy with it!

Nope, that's a replated NEW head on a hand-turned, custom handle that cooncatbob made on his metal lathe. I've just received a Bob's Razor Works replated NEW head myself, and its a thing of beauty. I'm eagerly awaiting Bob to finish me a custom long barberpole handle to go with it.

Bob's Razor Works does some good work, very highly recommended!

Nice and for $10 you got a steal.

Just got it tonight - can't wait to try it. It is a "Good Will" New head matched to - well - not sure where the handle came from. But both have a fresh nickel plating.

:thumbup1: Nice razor.

That is definitely a fine, fine-looking razor.

Size wise and performance wise, how does it compare to the BBB?

You can see fingerpringts on the polish! Is it rather on the aggressive side?

Yes there are fingerprints - I was in such a hurry to show everyone that I did not wipe the thing off.

It IS on the aggressive side - and I like that. Also - the heavy handle (this thing weighs in at 3 oz.) is a plus in this case. The razor just glides by itself and does not skip.

I want to reiterate that CONCATBOB not only plated the razor, but he also made the handle from scratch, and did a mighty fine job.

See his web site of offerings:

Yes Bob's handles are great. I purchased his "tech sytle" one in person yesterday. The handle is amazingly hefty. Can't wait to try it out on my old style head and a parker head I have.

Nice and for $10 you got a steal.

Ditto - while the focus is often on the better know Sheffield blades, virtually all of the Sheffield wedges I've seen/used have been good shavers - regardless of the make.

That looks to be a tad under a full wedge (technically, a full wedge has a triangular profile), this one has a bit of metal taken from the sides so that the entire side doesn't come into contact with the hone (which makes honing much easier as you don't have to remove as much metal).

This looks to be a nice heavy Sheffield blade that should give you a great shave!

Make sure you let us know how this one works for you!

It's my new favorite blade! It arrived looking virtually unused, just OLD, so I cleaned it up a bit. Now...near-mirror finish, scales are clean...sooo nice.

I rehoned it gently on some 3M 15 micron abrasive film, again with the spine taped but this time in a circular motion. This seemed to hone the smiley edge uniformly and give a consistent bevel. Took down to 5 micron, and again to chrom-ox paddle and TM strop.

It shaved very nicely after my first honing, but after this round, it is sooo much better. The weight and the smile seem to give a very smooth, easy shave. I'll post an "open" pic..totally forgot to do that.
