View Full Version : Merkur Adjustables...

For Christmas, I'm planning on adding a new Merkur adjustable. Money won't be the decision maker. Being a good shaver will be. Unfortunately, I can't order them all and send back the discards. For those of you using a Merkur adjustable, tell me which one you like (not the one(s) you don't like) and why you think it is a keeper.
Thanks in advance!

Randy, as far as adjustables go, I like the Vision. Cool design, close shave and weighted just right for shaving.

Andrew,
Is it your daily shaver? Oh, and glad to see you heard from your son!

Thanks Randy. I actually alternate between several razors. My favorite is the slant bar but it's not adjustable. I also have a futur and HD. I have not tried a progressive but hear good things about it.

Would there be a reason to choose the slant over an adjustable, and if so, why?

Randy, with the slant bar I always get a close shave. Once you get your technique down, there is no comparison. I would choose the slant bar over any of my other adjustables any day. The slant bar glides over the contours of your face with no adjustment.

Well, I'm thinking...I had pretty much made up my mind on the Progress. It, combined with the Slant are still less than the Vision! Still, I have time to study on this. I'm really happy with my HD Classic, not sure why I want to add another razor.

I own a FUTUR, HD, Slant Bar, and Progress. I haven't had a chance to try the Slant Bar or Progress yet. They're still new in the box. I've tried the FUTUR and the HD and love them both.
Randy, sooner or later, you're just going to have to get more than one.

RR,
I've added creams, soaps, colognes and now different blades, including Feather, Merkur and straights! I'm not that impressed with the Gillettes or injectors I have bought. My HD classic is a great razor, and for whatever reason, I feel the need to add another Merkur. Since I have read Andrew's posts, I've just about made up my mind to add the Progress AND the Slant. Now I just need to justify the decision.

Randy,
I have both the Progress and the \| and they are both good razors. BUT, if I were looking for a better shaving tool, I really think that I could overlook some of the faults of the FUTUR and buy it instead.:yesnod: The adjustment mechanism is really superior to the Progress and the shave is as good or better than the \|. To get the \| to perform I had to use Feathers, of which I think you are not fond. Just my 40% of a nickel...

Randy:
I have a Progress and a Vision in the adjustable arena and enjoy both of them. I like the size of the Progress more but the Vision has its strong points as well, design being one of them. I don't think you would be sorry for buying the Progress and from what I see posted, I see very few complaints about them. For the price, I think it's a great razor and wouldn't give mine up.
Oddly enough, one of my favorites now is the classic long-handle. Very elegant....but we were talking adjustables.

Randy,
As one shaver who owns several Merkur razors(HD Classic, HD Slant Bar, HD Open Comb, Progress and Vision) I can testify that they all have their pros and cons. The Progress blade exposure is different on each side of the razor, the Slant Bar gives a great shave but some find it a bit too aggressive, the open comb does not seem to have much of a following at all, the Vision gives a fantastic shave--some compare it to a str8 razor--but some find it too big & bulky, difficult to reach certain parts of the face.
The one I find I go to as my everyday razor, the HD Classic.
YMMV.

Randy,
I only have the Futur, so I have nothing to compare it to. It is a great razor, but after hearing all of the talk about the Vision...I'm trying to negotiate the acquistion of the Vision by my girlfriend for Christmas.

Oh Randy, I wished you hadn't made this post. Now I'm getting the urge for another razor. From reading the replies I am wanting to try a slant.
God, when will it ever end?
My name is Tony and I have RAD.

Gents,
I spent the last 10 days using a Gillette Adjustable, trying to understand why I might want an adjustable, and also studying the differences between the Progress, Futur and Vision. I pondered long and hard. Pros, cons costs, and finally made a decision. My new toy will arrive on Wednesday.
I went with the SR-208 Badger brush from QED! I may be wrong, but I just don't see where the adjustable gave me a getter shave than my HD Classic. Granted, I didn't use a Merkur, but I know I'll be happy with the new Savile Row!
Call me wishy-washy!

BAD, RAD, whatever. I want one of those SR-208s also. Let me know how it works out.

Dear Mr. Wishy-washy:
Congratulations on your new brush purchase and my guess is you'll enjoy it tremendously. You can never have enough brushes!
As far as the razors go, my Merkur adjustable shaves a LOT differently that my Gillette adjustable......just to keep you second guessing yourself!
And....while I do own the Progress and while it's one of my favorites, my HD will be showing up on my doorstep Wednesday! Just had to know for sure.
We'll be looking for a review soon!

Jerry,
You'll love the HD! My decision to not go with an adjustable (at least for now) is that the shaves were not consistent. No matter the setting, I either got a good shave, or bled alot! Never a great shave. Considering I do shave with a straight, I think I know how to take my time and do things right. One thing I never got, was a shave as good as the HD. Not even close. SO, maybe a slant if I can get one on ebay, but for now the SR-208, which I have coveted for months, will have to do. I'll be doing a review next week. Also, Ron has one of these inbound, so I'm sure he will be covering it as well. And since he is the Lathermeister...well, what can I say, except for using words everyone will be able to understand! AND, in English!

Randy,
After talking to Charles I decided on the Futur. He recommended the SR-208 as well and that may be in my stocking if Ms. Claus is kind to me this year. I don't have the experience you have and therefore, probably won't know the difference in the beginning. Hopefully, I'll grow with the Futur. Let us know how you like the 208.

Bob,
I have no doubt that you will love the Futur. I started with the HD, and I know it, IMO, about as well as you can know a razor. I'm sure that accounts for my bias. As for as the 208, give Mrs. Claus a push. Charles tends to run out of them frequently.

The Merkur HD is not similar to the Progress in blade exposure is different on each side of the razor?

Randy,
I also find the Merkurs shave better for me than the Gillettes I have used...just a matter of personal preference. I have found that my Gillette adjustables shave differently on each side as was mentioned in a couple of earlier posts.
I currently have 4 Merkurs. 1) Classic, 2) Long Handle Classic, 3) HD Classic and 4) Slant. I like all of them! Each has it's own little characteristics I like. Right now the Classic and HD Classic are tied for 1st place, the Slant is 2nd and the Long Handle number 4.
You mentioned something about not really "needing" another Merkur right now. What does "need" have to do with this grooming habit...hobby...obsession? I don't "need" another razor either, but I plan on buying the other Merkurs in the future [Futur]. :001_smile
A man can never have too many razors! Matter of fact, I'm now contemplating building a nice stand to display my Merkur collection on. Someday they'll being selling our Merkurs on ebay and they'll be the Classics then! Some invest in real estate...I choose to diversify and invest some in "Cutting Edge Technology".
"That's right honey...someday we're gonna' be wealthy...right now I'm investing for our future...buying Futurs!"
Want a hot stock tip? Stock up on the Futur! :thumbup1: Fifty years from now, they'll be the hottest thing on ebay!!!
Happy Shaving,
Ron

Ron,
The Futur is the one Merkur I'm interested in that has eluded me. I now have the HD (well, I have two, one will be going to my son at graduation), Long Handle Open Comb, and two Slant Bars (one I am re-conditioning). These go along with a hand full of straights. I think I'm good on razors...for now.

Randy,
I think it depends on your shave style and what feels comfortable in your hands. i own the HD and the VISION. As i have pointed out in other posts, the HD was a tad 2 small 4 me- the VISION was just right.
being wishy-washy myself( ), i now use both of them during my daily shave; but if i only have time for one pass, then it's the VISION all the time. this probably doesn't help as u have already ordered, but who knows what the future holds!

The Vision still remains off of my list. If I'm dropping a c-note on a razor, it's gonna be a straight!
