Guys, for Christmas I received an old spice gift set from the 1940s (Grand Turk) in a wood box. The shaving mug still has the soap in it and I was wondering if you guys think it would be ok to use. The soap looks like it got hot once or twice because the surface is not smooth, but it does not look to be used. The seal was broken but other than that everything is in its place.
Thanks

absolutely usable! let a Tbs of hot water sit on the puck for few min and give it a test whirl...

let's see a few pics of the mug and wooden box :w00t:

By all means!! I just recently sold a 50's OS mug complete with original Shulton soap puck to a B&B member and he said the lather exploded on the brush when using the soap. He really loved it. Excellent find!

It will be fine to use. It may have lost a lot of its scent, but that's the worst it would be.

I have an Old Spice puck/mug from the 50s and it works great.

Indulge yourself. Should be just fine.

Thanks for the responses. I will use it tomorrow and let you know how it works, and with some luck, pictures. It smells pretty strong I can only imagine what it smelled like if it has lost some of the scent.

As far as I know, it's also tallow-based! That alone makes it a great find :w00t:

A member here by the name of Jim (and I believe a couple others) use vintage Old Spice with no problems whatsoever.

I have a 1940s OS mug w/soap. It is wonderful stuff. Use it and be grateful.

I have a brand new Old Spice mug and soap in the original box that has never been used. I've been wondering about how it might perform and now I'm even more intrigued. I've been holding off to keep this for its antique/collector value. Dilemmas, dilemmas!

Well, I do use the aftershave near every day! I will have to scour for some old pucks on the internet. They show up on the 'Bay periodically, but usually at a premium price (well, OK, less than my Penhaligon's, but still somewhat high)!:001_smile

I enjoy both the soap and old shulton AS.

Yes, yes, yes use it! I've got some that had pretty much lost all of it's Old Spice scent, but it is great soap. Tallow is gold.

Another thought is to try the new soaps with an Old Spice scent. I know some of the boutique soapmakers popular here make such a beast. That might be a good approach.:001_smile

Maybe. But the real value in using vintage OS soap is the lathering properties, not the scent.

I've heard the new soaps with the OS scent are good. However..... I agree with the previous poster. It's the tallow brother!

If you really don't want to break into this one, why don't you get some of the new stuff to use now and watch for some more vintage OS on ebay? Sometimes it's expensive, but it's there. Then you could have one to collect and one to shave with.

If you're unable to find a decent price on a vintage OS puck (I see a soap and mug on Ebay going for $75 if you're interested :001_rolle), then I'd recommend either HBS or Mama Bear. If you're looking for the original, Shulton scent, go with Mama Bear. If you're looking for the P&G scent, go with HBS. At the end of the day, in terms of performance and scent, I prefer HBS.

Thanks for the advice. I will try Mama Bear's. I've heard good things about their soaps.:001_smile

Agreed, it is all about the tallow. I used it this morning and it was amazing. Loads of great lather and was very easy to get the ratio correct. Now the scent wasn't really there, but I should try some of mama bear's.

I was fortunate to find a NOS Old Spice Mug filled with an unused puck of Old Spice soap yesterday. I used it this morning and was happy that it still had a subtle Old Spice scent to it and it lathered very much like the vintage Yardley soaps I have enjoyed in the past. Used the VDH drugstore boar brush with it and it was a very good match for this tallow soap. Scour those antique stores guys because this stuff is worth experiencing!

Just won some on the Bay for actual shaving use. I am hesitant to break open the NOS in the original box soap for daily use. Someone was selling just a mug with unused soap in it and I got it for under $20.

Needless to say, my report on its performance will follow!:001_smile

I recently had the same "Problem". It didn't take much to convince me that I had to try it. Ive used it twice and I have to say, they have been two of the finest shaves I've ever had.

My first shave with old Old Spice soap. Won it on the Bay. It is clearly old and was a bit dried out. No discernable scent other than a clean soap smell. I wonder if it lost the scent over the ages. So I moistened it up and doused it with some OS aftershave!

Nice lather, clearly a lot of tallow in this formulation.

I would really like to get a stock pile of old Old Spice shaving soap for my own use. But the auctions on the Bay have NOS soaps going for over $40 (soap alone plus shipping). It is even more if you want a mug with that. This is a bit steep, considering I can get more Penhaligon's for cheaper. :frown:

I guess it is the law of supply and demand!

USE IT, USE IT, USE IT, USE IT!!!!!!!

It may not smell like much, but it's great soap. Lots and lots of groovy tallow. I found a mug and soap for $12 and I'm using it sparingly. If it were mass produced, I would alternate between Tabac and Old Spice Soap every other day. As it is, I use it once a week.

Amazingly, NOS Old Spice soap refills are selling on da Bay for over $25 a puck. I have found more reasonable prices for mugs with new soap in it believe it or not.

This puts this soap in the same price class as Penhaligons, D.R. Harris or AOS. Pricey indeed. But I love how it lathers!

This one went for $36 plus shipping. It had NOS soap, aftershave and talc. That was a good deal.

Mama Bear's Aged Spice is a great vintage Old Spice scent in a fine new glycerin soap. Try her website at http://mamabearssoaps.com

my Old Spice mug & soap circa 1970s arrived today and I had a great shave with it. I soaked the soap in boining water for about 5 minutes and dropped it into the mug. Lather was amazing and it was the first shave ever where I did not need to follow up with Aveeno moisturizer.

will the Mama Bears or HBS fit into the original mug or do they need reshaping?

I believe the Mama Bear soap is too wide for an Old Spice mug, but you can melt it in the microwave or double boil it easily enough. Not sure about HBS pucks as i've never seen/used one.

I'm using a vintage puck too and I'm amazed at how moisturizing it feels afterwards. Almost like the sensation I get after Mitchell's Wool Fat, but lathers ten times better!
