Shaken, not stirred. Oh yes, the mighty Eucris. One of my absolute favourites. Heady, sophisticated, testosterone laden, yet thoroughly gentlemanly. I agree that this one does not belong on a 20 something though that's strictly my opinion. I am not good at describing scent notes but gents, this is the one to try when you're dressed up or want to present a powerful personna. It is not as long lasting on my skin as I'd like but YMMV in that aspect. A true winner.

I am a bit dissappointed by the "not for younger gents" description. It sounds so bloody nice.... Especially that bit about being reminisent of a light oil. I definitely like the idea of smelling vaguely like i've been tinkering on the Deere, but in a cleaned-up, sophisticated way.

I got a sample of Eucris- and I was really impressed by the depth and maturity of this scent- not airy and fleeting, but robust. Just outstanding.

I have to say that while there are plenty of scents that I don't personally care for, there only a few that I have a strong hatred of. This is one of them. On me, it is truly a revolting affair. Just thinking about it makes me ill. Headache-inducing swill.
Of course, YMMV :001_tt2: :001_tt2:

Now, that there is the beauty of the diversity of tastes- Here's the reason why decants and samples are key to this enterprise. One man's delights are anothers swill.

Scotto, say it isn't so! Hey, I know what you mean about swill. I was once given a bottle of Yardley of London A/S and it smelled just like a skunk on me! My dad too, that's why he gave it to me. Thanks pop. I don't know if this was the American version or English and don't care. It was either off or just hated our body chemistry. Yeesh.

After smelling Eucris.... I know know what happens to the run-off liquid from industrial wastes sites.... or perhaps from the left over things that the waste water treatment plants won't even touch.
I've often suspected that Pinald is secretly manufacturing Ecris...
Ok, ok, it's not quite putrid, but it is an acquired taste.

Now, that's interesting. I have not encountered a Skunk-Cologne yet, but when I used to be an Animal Control Officer... I used to smell like that all of the time anyway.
I was smelling Trumper's Astor cologne the other day. I keep telling myself, "This stuff smells just like a Stinkbug!" I was too afraid of wearing it, lest my chemistry not change the smell and I end up smelling like a stinkbug all day long. I keep a little on hand though, for those days when I have meetings with people that I find disagreeable.
Yes, I use my Fragrance Art Skills as a weapon.... but at least I'm mentally stable enough to admit it up front.

This is a great discussion thread! So many well-stated viewpoints, and none of them are wrong.
Scotto’s post in the review thread was so eloquent and funny that it cracks me up each time I read it. I’ve got to quote it here to fuel the discussion.
Here is what Eucris smells like on me Take ten bushels of blackberries and other assorted fruit. Now leave it in the hot sun for a week until it is a foetid, putrifying mess. Now find a homeless guy who hasn't showered in a month and have him roll around in it. Now you'll begin to appreciate what the scent is like. Truly vile.
That being said, there are many folks who love this stuff. To each his own.
He’s right, you know. The foetid blackberry and homeless guy notes are in there. Along with the industrial waste mentioned by Joedy, and a host of other unusual notes and forbidden memories about the less savory aspects of the world. I don’t think anyone would characterize this scent as “innocent.” Yet it is so skillfully blended that it is entirely appropriate when wearing a tux, or for negotiations with a CEO. It leaves the impression that the wearer is familiar with the darker aspects of the world, has dealt with them, and has mastered them.
I think that’s why it would be difficult for a younger guy to pull this one off. Instead of worldly and masterful he might just come off as evil.
I can see how someone might get a headache wearing it, especially if they applied it too liberally. It doesn’t do that to me though.
By the way, my warning about not posting in the review thread was meant to stop the “Where can I buy this?” and “Do you think this would be good for my grandson?” posts, that end up putting a bunch of default zero scores in the cumulative reviews. If you’ve tried it feel free to rate it in the review thread, good or bad.

I must say that even though I don't care for the scent, I can appreciate the artistry that went into it.

Now, that's interesting. I have not encountered a Skunk-Cologne yet,...
Do not be so sure. You may have encountered somethig quite similar.
Civet is a preparation from a skunk-like excretion of the civet cat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civet), used in perfume.
Here's a quote from The Straight Dope website (http://www.straightdope.com/columns/010525.html).
First of all, the civet isn't a cat, it just looks like one--actually it's related to the mongoose. And those sweaty excretions aren't sweat--they come from the perineal glands, next to the civet's anus. (What do you mean, "Ewww"? We've barely gotten started. I'll give you something to go "ewww" about.) The perineal glands contain a smelly substance that civets, and true cats for that matter, use to mark their territory. In ancient times some unknown perfume artisan came to an important realization:
Olfactory protoscientist #1: Man, this civet smell is rank.
Olfactory protoscientist #2: Yes, but it lasts a really long time!
Olfactory protoscientist #1: [Pause.] I'm not seeing how this helps us.
In fact, when used in minute quantities civet has a certain musky allure, and when mixed with more perishable fragrances it prolongs their scent.
I don't find any evidence that you get civet out of civets by whipping them, but the process is none too pleasant. According to the World Society for the Protection of Animals (www.wspa.org.uk/campaigns/civ ets/civet01.html (http://www.wspa.org.uk/campaigns/civets/civet01.html)), which has investigated civet harvesting in Ethiopia, the animals are kept in tiny cages for years. Every few days the keepers scrape the civet out of the anal sacs, a painful procedure (not to mention one of the world's worst jobs). The WSPA says that Chanel, Cartier, and Lancome have all admitted to using civet in their products and that laboratory tests detected the ingredient in Chanel No. 5. Chanel says it substituted synthetic civet for the natural version starting in 1998
Then there's castorium, from the perineal gland of the beaver, and musk asociated with the genetalia of the musk deer.
I've heard it said that love and hatred are not opposites, that they're actually quite close. The opposite of them is indifference.
The same for smells.

It is kind of funny that this thread has been resurrected. I wore Eucris just last night. Fall has finally landed out here in cattle country though the last few weeks has seen a stubborn resurgence in summer temps. Till this week. It was a "balmy" 68F yesterday and about 60F today. Dry air, light north breeze, and a trip to the eldest daughter's girls singing ensemble last night was the perfect time to don the Eucris. I have not changed my opinion on the quality of the scent. The blast of black current leaf essence was so reassuring after a long summer's hiatus. I still think it may be a tad out of place on a youngster but for those who are going to try it, just don't wear it with denim and baseball cap. Especially the cap or I will slap you. It is truly a classy scent.

I have been reading this site for a while now (ever since I decided to shavew the old soup catcher), there is lots of good info here.
Anyways I am interested in Eucris, and was wondering if anyone knew where to get some samples in Canada, or if there is a store in Vancouver that sells this stuff, cause I don't want to buy this without first smelling it.
Thanks

Just got a sample of this stuff, and I like it. I'll probably breakdown and buy a bottle real soon. So far the best price has been from The Gentleman's Shop (http://www.gentlemans-shop.com/acatalog/trumper-eucris-cologne.html#a186).
Is there any other place that sells it for cheaper and ships to Canada?

I don't particularly care for Eucris. . . there is something putrid about it on me for the first couple hours. After that, it gets much better but I don't know about having to go through those first couple of hours with that smell. . . not worth it, really. Very long lasting scent and strong sillage. . .

I got a sample of Eucris a while back, and I didn't like it at all the first time I tried it. I'll give it another go in a week or so....hopefully, I won't get any putrified fruit, gear oil and homeless man underwear notes...

Done and done. I just ordered a bottle.
EDIT:
The staying power seems really good. A dab on the back of my hand lasts for hours. Usually nothing lasts on me even if I bathe in it.

Okay...tried it. My first impression was positive...however, when this stuff dries down....it turns to :9898:.
I'm not a big cologne guy but this just seemed a little too harsh and overbearing for me upon application. Strong stuff, and after it calms down a bit it turns to a syrupy, almost sickly sweet smell that sticks around for awhile. I could still smell traces of it on my wrist after showering the next day.

I had to immediately wash Eucris off. It smelled like a petroleum product (like WD-40) with a heavy mix of pepper. Awful.
My tastes in Trumper's cologne is more towards the Curzon or Marlborough lines.

Not only does it smell like an old man, but the cumin is VERY, VERY strong on me. I smell like an old man that just made chili...not exactly scent I would pay money for.

This is definitely a cologne to sample before purchasing. I purchased a sample and tried it out. The more I used it the more I liked it with my body chemistry. On me, you can definitely pick out the cumin note, but it melds nicely with the others and wears well on me. As I am 41 and the father of three, I think I qualify for the "old man" scent. :001_tongu

I have been on a sampling tear the last several weeks and am amazed at how much body chemistry can affect fragrances. My body just seemed to absorb most of Eucris and very few of Trumper's listed perfume notes came through. It went on as a very dry, almost bitter coriander which quickly dried down to a jasmine powder scent. I applied some more after a few hours and got a very quick note of dark fruit which disappeared leaving me with the same coriander to floral powder development. It wasn't unpleasant, but not particularly pleasant or compelling either.
Eucris definitely isn't for everyone. I cannot fathom how anyone would buy a bottle without trying a sample first. The fruit element + coriander did not work well at all on my skin...kinda sour and nasty actually. It's a very complex and interesting scent though.

I like Eucris a lot. It's a very dark fragrance, imo. The black bottle is suitable, indeed. I thought about buying a bottle, but I don't feel old (mature) enough to wear it. It's an interesting fragrance that works well on me, though.

I'm somewhat disappointed by the number of people who have dismissed it as a poor fragrance for "20-somethings". They would forget that there are many of my generation who don't wear their baseball caps sideways. There are some who wear their hair with pomade, shave with vintage razors, wear tailored shirts, and sport century old British EDTs. While many older members of this community look at youth from the perspective of wisdom and age, others simply associate it blindly with immaturity. But, for those of us who chose to act with grace and gentlemanly intent, there is Trumper's Eucris.
To me, it has always seemed to be two sided. On hot summer evenings, the moss and jasmine notes lend it a cool, inviting scent. In the fairer months, the warmth of the sandalwood and pepper notes transform it in to an invigorating and lively fragrance, perfect for formal occasions. Either way, it works very well for my personality. That is the first consideration when trying a new fragrance, for me at least. Citrus and patchouli bases never lend me much favor. Darker colognes and EDTs highlight many of the characteristics that I wish to project. Eucris fits this bill perfectly.
Gents, eat your heart out. There's an 18 year old walking around wearing Eucris.

I read through this thread, and am quite amazed at the polar opposite opinions on this fragrance. While I haven't tried the EDT, the Trumpers sample pack I got had the Eucris body wash, and I liked the scent. Does anybody know whether the EDT smells close/similar to the body wash? In addition, any comparisons with the Curzon fragrance? There was a sample vial of Curzon, and I really liked it. Trying to decide between the two.

I sent an email request on Monday to Geo F. Trumper for a sample of their legendary fragrance Eucris. I got a very proper, prompt, and polite reply that "a sample of Eucris will be dispatched tomorrow." I received the sample today, Saturday. I am two and a half hours into wearing it, and so far so good. It is a complex scent profile, and I find it very gentlemanly in an old-school way - hence the opinion it may not be the best for a younger man - but hey if you can pull it off- go for it! I am looking for a cologne to compliment my planned birthday sandalwood shave - Sandalwood Skin Food prep/AS along with a Superlather shave of QED Sandalwood soap, and EJ Sandalwood cream - Eucris may be the one.

This young man, is not a "young punk", and can wear Eucris just as well as I can ... he describes quite well the "intent" that Eucris projects for me. It is a cologne I can wear and sweep aside the hair of a date as I help her with her jacket, set my hand between her bare shoulder blades as I assist her in navigating a busy restaurant/bar, fix the dress tag sticking out on a complete stranger's evening gown, and buy a LADY a drink at a friend's bar WITHOUT being or feeling like a complete slimebag trying to get under skirts. "Grace and gentlemanly intent" ... I applaud you young sir.
Add to this fragrance; C&S 88, and Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille. Granted, it may only be the effect that these colognes have on my easily mpressionable psyche, a mind that bloody well searches for ANY trace of what men use to be ... but the result/intent/feeling is the same, whether placebo is responsible or not, these scents can be the muse that inspire young men to behave accordingly.
Now ... off to dinner on the west coast of Barbados, where UK gentleman have flocked to for ages :-) and I'll be wearing Terre d'Hermes.

I'm moved and impressed by your mellifluous exhortations, and although I agree with your commentary on youth (I wish I had been so enlightened eight years ago), I'm going to have to disagree with you on Eucris.
I like colognes that bring out "darker" aspects of life, but this one smells a bit like that acrid odor of a jacket worn too long by someone down on his luck. I prefer gangster dark or vampire dark, not ex-CEO-turned-hobo dark. I guess that set of predilections doesn't speak volumes for my maturity. Oh well.

If you love the drydown, I invite you to try a shave followed by Trumper's Coral Skinfood before your Eucris application; the overwhelming ROSE of the skinfood brings out the early notes of Eucris in a "spritier" fashion and melds well into the drydown. However, C&S 88 and Coral Skinfood would bring you to the same drydown albeit without the "rotten" fruit and truly dark side.
As with all fragrances, and I am no expert, YMMV ... but this really is my interpretation of the scents.

"CEO turned hobo" makes me think of the Mel Brooks movie, Life Stinks.
That's a great movie. I own the DVD, and I think I'm going to watch it now!

I just picked up a trifecta of Eucris goodness. I'm in the camp that likes the scent, but also feel that its pretty strong. My post-shave routine will typically include alum, balm, and/or AS splash, and even talc (depending on level of irritation). Given that GFT does not offer an AS or ASB in Eucris to accompany the EdT (and could anyone take it if they did); are there any recommendations?

This morning's SOTD combined Eucris (soap, cream, EdT) with Trumpers Limes (Skin Food, AS). This was based on a trusted recommendation. Surprisingly, the combination worked out great. I like the pairing better than either alone

Okay, I've been reading though this thread and I've got to try some! Will it be CEO-turned-hobo or sophisticated gentleman? I particularly like the remark about it smelling like an old man that just made chili or something similar.

Okay, so I've been using the shaving cream for a couple of months and LOVE it! I had to buy the Eucris EDT from the English Shaving Company while they had free shipping... This is a great scent and one of my new favorites. My wife requests that I wear it...

I'm a big Eucris fan as well. However, I find it wears better on me in the cooler months, which are few and far between here in the deep South.

Tomorrow morning I am going to try my eucris shaving cream sample and cologne sample.
I can't wait to smell like an old man.

LOVE this cream. Looking to add a bottle of the edt after I come across a sample or see a deal on BST or something.

I completely agree. The worst I have tried to date.
