Handmade Scuttle Owners What do you like/not like about your Bird, Moss.Georgetown Scuttles? I'm wanting one but would like some feedback from those that have one or have tried them. I certainly appreciate the craftsmanship and utility of design.

I use a DB everyday. The heat retention is really quite amazing. My DB is a heavy duty piece of equipment also. jbaca, I can't speak for the other brands but I do believe you will be thoroughly impressed with any of them.

I have a Peach scuttle that I bought from a member here. I really like it. Nice warm lather on a cold winter day is awesome. I was just floating a bowl in the sink but you have to remember to lift the bowl out of the sink before you rinse your face our you ruin your lather.

Now, here are some thoughts on scuttles:
1) For me a two piece is essential - too humid here most of the year and the idea of something that cannot be dried with a towel on the inside is just asking for mildew. I've seen some two piece jobs with a notch on the inner bowl that catches on the handle of the outer to keep in in place. I don't have that nor do I see that really as a necessary feature.
2) Since I mostly lather in a bowl I wish the outer bowl of my scuttle was hemispherical inside. This way I could build the lather in the outer bowl and then put the brush in the inner bowl fill the outer with hot water and I'm ready to shave.
3) Consider having the bottom of the outer bowl the same diameter as a coffee cup warming plate. This way you don't have to rely on the hot water inside the bowl to stay hot on it's own.

I've been a good boy this year so....
I am very happy with it! It does all that I want and has brought even more pleasure and comfort into my shaving regime..

If you are a bowl latherer a scuttle works fine. There is aso a Dirty Bird brush scuttle that comes in 2 parts to keep the brush warm for face latherers. You can add an optional lathering bowl and they all stack together.
I use a scuttle most of the time since I like to whip lather in a bowl, so might as well use the scuttle and keep it warm. The Georgetown is huge and heavy but it gives you plenty of room to whip the lather with any size brush.

I have the Large Moss with a waterfall pattern. I absolutely love it. However, with hindsight being 20/20, I would get the small scuttle as the larger one does let alot of the warmth escape.

The largest brush I have is a SR 3226. I think the smaller scuttle could house that brush without a problem but the smaller scuttle would definitely keep the smaller brushes warmer.

Also, I don't lather in the scuttle. With soap, I lather right off the puck and put the brush in the scuttle. With cream, I use the Ayars Bowl, also in the waterfall pattern.

This a picture with the Large Moss Scuttle with the Savile Row 3226 brush inside the scuttle. You can see that there is plenty of room. With a smaller brush, there is too much room, imo.

I just got a custom 2-piece scuttle for Christmas. My sister made it for me and it's awesome. I'll post pictures later along with a review. The bottom line is this: I used to float my lathering bowl in hot water in the sink and I thought that was the same as using a scuttle. I was wrong. This thing is much easier to use and keeps my lather much warmer through at least 3 passes. Get one!

I've been using a Dirty Bird since Julie started making them. Does a great job. I would not ever want a two piece. It gets humid here too and I've had no problem getting the Dirty Bird dry. I'm sure I'd break a two piece in no time flat. The Moss is certainly another one to consider although more money. I sold the Georgetown I had as it did not have enough of a water reservoir to keep the lather warm. Very nice looking piece of pottery though.

I received an email from the people at Georgetown that read they have changed the design to allow for more water between the two bowls.

Hopefully someone can be a guinea pig and try the new one out.

I have a new Georgetown Scuttle on order (Christmas present from my lovely wife!). Due to the time needed to make the scuttle and some vacation time at Georgetown Pottery, I won't be seeing it until mid-January or so. I'll post something once it arrives. :001_rolle

I got one for Xmas, but I'm away from home and wanted to wait to post a picture review and comparison with a G3.
One thing I can say is that my G3 holds a little over 4 oz of water and the new one holds about 8 oz. The inside bowl is slightly smaller compared to the G3 to allow for this, but still a good size for those that like to use it to build lather on.
