Any UK members received a letter from a company called Georgeson's (or know anyone who has), asking you to confirm your identity? PM me.

Was this snail mail or a PM on this site from that person?

We do not permit spamming of our PM system. Feel free to forward that to myself or other moderators and we will look into it, that is if it is a PM.

Thanks

No, this is snail mail (actually fully legal and legitimate) from a UK company. I've received this myself. It deals with personal assets, thus I felt that any members might prefer to discuss this via pm, rather than through posts. I have information that may be useful to others in this connection.

What is your connection to this company?

Just so nobody gets the wrong end of the stick here - Georgesons are looking for people who are owed money from shares where companies like Standard Life, Bradford & Bingley and others converted from being mutual institutions to being quoted companies.

They (Georgesons) will attempt to rip the person they're contacting a fee (min 10%) to get the cash. It's legitimate business, however if you know which of the companies it is that potentially has monies on your behalf, you can get it for free simply by calling/writing to them (the company, not Georgesons).

Thanks. You've said it all. I would have said precisely the same in a response to any PM. Just felt that, as it was to do with money, folk might prefer the PM route. I think it is important to point out that Georgeson is not attempting to rip anybody off. They are acting quite legally as the appointed representative of the companies you mention, and charging the recipient 10%+VAT for their services. But, as you correctly point out, any stock due can be rightfully claimed directly from the companies concerned, without engaging any intermediary and incurring any fees.

.... I think it is important to point out that Georgeson is not attempting to rip anybody off....

In my view attempting to relieve someone of almost 12% in fees for something that can otherwise be done for free with similar effort, I call that a rip off  But then, I begrudge paying a ha'penny over the odds for anything
