hello tim,
what rik said. definitely.
it is the only alcohol-based aftershave that i like (trumper's skin food is the only non-alcoholic aftershave i like). turns out they both have glycerin and menthol. hmm...
thanks,
mike

The Musgo is good stuff - but the scent can linger for a bit.
My other recommendations are:
Tabac - can linger as well and great for layering with the shaving soap; and
Proraso - very good stuff, cooling with a light scent that fades quickly.
I think the Musgo is the most expensive of these - at about $20 - $25 for a decent sized bottle.
Old Spice!
:w00t: Hehe, its the only Alcohol based A/S I have.

I am now a HUGE fan of Aqua Velva. Great stuff. Although I heard there was a third, green kind, that is the original, and not generally available in the US. Lee suggested that Classic might have it (or maybe he was responding to someone else's post), but I could not find it on their site. Any comments?

Speick splash. Check out my review
I second the vote for the Speick slash... it's really nice stuff, and it contains Alum to fight off razor burn.
Cheers, DJ.

Victor from Visconti di Modrone for a refined scent or the Proraso splash for a most effective, soothing effect.

I used Aqua Velva for the first time tonight and I almost screamed when I put it on my face... I was expecting some burn, but this was shockingly painful. Of course the burn lasts all of two seconds, and after that my face feels great. Yowza

I very seldom ever get a burn from Aqua Velva. The only time I do is if I've been a little rough on the shave. It is good stuff.
Kind of strange that I've tried almost every cream and aftershave product on the market in some form or another, and the ones that seem to treat me best, shave and cost wise, are Palmolive shave cream and Aqua Velva or Mennen Skin Bracer. Some of the cheapest products available and it only cost me hundreds, nah, thousands, when you add it all up, to find that out. Guess it's the journey and not the destination. It's all in the getting there I guess?

I always shave pretty aggressively and end up with 1 or 2 weepers most of the time. Last night was my first shave with a vision and after the third pass my face was a bit tender so that's most likely why the AV burned so much

hello slider,
that is probably why the AV burned. the only time i get any kind of burn from it is if i used a razor blade for 1 too many shaves and got razor burn. otherwise it is very refreshing to use and about 2 seconds later the menthol kicks in...wow.
with regards to the proraso splash at target, i don't think they ever carried it as everytime i went there i always looked to see if they had it because i really wanted to try it.
hope this helps.
thanks,
mike

Try the Dominica Bay Rum (California-Antilles Trading Co.), it burns like crazy(but in a good way). It smells good and doesn't last much longer than 15 minutes. Also make sure it's the after shave and not the colonge, which has more scent in it.

St. John's Bay Rum, (the highest quality Bay Rum AS splash IMVHO) has a quickly fading scent....on my skin at least.

I agree with traderjoe. St. John's is the best bay rum I've used (most authentic). It's got that, tree sort of smell, like you stick your nose against the bark or something with a slight spice scent also? Best I can do, sorry. NOTHING like Pinaud or Dominica.
The BIG drawback to it is the staying power. I agree, 15 minutes is about it's lifespan. A shame really, but the price you pay I guess for the quality bay scent.

 that's about how I'd describe it too....it just really is very unlike any other bay rum scent. Supposedly they are the original?
The staying power is a drawback, for sure. But this stuff is quite versatile. It does not dry the skin at all, but in fact leaves it feeling moisturized. I also use this when I get cuts to clean and close the wound. (do people in the carribbean actually do this?)

Yep, AV burns like hell on rashed or cut skin. Other than that, it's just a mild alcohol sensation, then the cooling effect kicks in.
I love AV, it is my main aftershave. If I feel razor burned, then I go to my Proraso balm.

I just found an Aqua Velva clone at the local Dollar store. It is called Aqua Blue and it is made in Santa Clarita, Ca.
Smells and feels like the William's Aqua Velva: for one dollar, it makes a great travel after shave.

There's a very resonably priced gel from Gillette that doesn't sting as much as many of the others. The scent is very clean and pleasant and it doesn't last a long time. It's called Gillette Series After Shave Gel, and it's in a turquoise plastic bottle that sits on its head. There are two varieties -- one is for more sensitive skin. Plus, I believe there's a companion product in a similarly-shaped bottle but is white rather than turquoise. Seems like it's for really sensitive skin or something. Haven't tried that one but all these sell at a local WalMart Neighborhood Grocery Store for about $2.50 for a 2 1/2 ounce bottle, so you really couldn't get hurt. Give one a try. I generally slap some on after my Witch Vera has been on for a few minutes. Then, before leaving for work, I put on Mennen Skin Bracer, Paul Sabastian, Old Spice or whatever scent I want for the day. It works real well!
Slider, maybe this is what you're looking for, too.
