View Full Version : Cranked it up to 11!

No, not really.
The Fatboy only goes to 9.
I did however crank it up to 5.
This is the highest I have ever opened it up to, as before, on 4 I would have lots of weepers, and the aftershave burned like a mother.
So, with a bowl of hot creamy C.O. Bigelow, a US made Personna(with 2 shaves on it), and my Fatboy, I shaved.
BBS smooth over 96% of my face. I took my time, let the weight of the razor do the work for me, kept my skin stretched tight, and my face wet.
I have 2 tiny little rough spots (invisible to the naked eye, and my girlfriend couldn't feel it) that has maybe 15 microscopic stubbly bastard little whiskers that wouldn't go away even after buffing.
No aftershave burn, and only one weeper(on a mole)
But hey, all in all a perfect shave.

That's a great story. Lots of us love the fatboy. To me it's the Harley Davidson of razors. There's something about the design that just says: "no kidding, solid, quality machinery" and somehow that's what Harleys say to me as well.
As it happens, you can "overclock" a fatboy. And so if you want it at 11 here's what you do:
Turn it up to 9. Very very gently press the red clicker in, and then just keep turning. Use a fingernail, or the end of a nylon comb, just be gentle with it. When it reaches the 1, it will now be overclocked a whole revolution.
That's the technique by the way to take the adjuster ring off the razor, so there's nothing strange about doing it. But when working with any mechanical object, it is always possible to break something so, don't blame me if you break the clicker.

I saw the link posted about a complete teardown.
I shudder to think of what kind of crud is inside, but I am more than happy with the shave it provides.
I will keep the overclocking in mind if I ever get to "9" and need more.

I have an idea that very few guys go beyond 9.

Unless you have skin like a rhino it's not suggested.

Pretty happy with the results of 5, and proper technique, I may try going higher, but I doubt I will be able to keep my concentration level up enough for daily shaving.
In fact, even at 5, I could feel the potential for great bloodloss.
Usually I am doing WTG at 1-2, and then ATG at 2-3.:blushing:

Ugh, it's more than 14 hours since I shaved, and am just NOW feeling my 5'oclock shadow.
I may have to skip tomorrow, as there will be little to no need for it.
On the bright side, my face still feels freshly shaven compared to the disposables I was using till I found the DE.

So far the highest I've ever used any of my Fat Boys on is 7. I got a great shave and one weeper. Not bad though, and I agree this is a well built machine!

I'm using mine on 8 for my daily shaver. I prefer it as it keeps me a bit more mindful of the powerful weapon I clutch between my fingers. Usually get very close to BBS, and go for it on those days when I am patient enough to hit those trouble spots carefully.

The difference between 7 and 9 isn't all that perceptible. I regularly open my razor up to 9 on my final pass without a problem. The only cuts I've given myself were from a 9 WTG/9 ATG two-pass shave... I doubt I'll muster up the bravery for that one in the near future...
I guess I'm confused, I thought the FatBoy had a reputation as a very aggressive razor, given the heft and [potential] blade gap, but I've not had any problems that weren't related to stupidity...

It's possible your FatBoy's adjustments is off.
I always thought the 7 that my slim and FatBoy gave me was pretty mild; I was startled I could take it up so high and still be rather fast and loose with it.
I recently got a better-condition slim, though, and MAN! it's noticeably more aggressive on 7 than my old slim.

I did a breakdown/cleaning of it pretty soon after I got it and made sure the adjustments were set correctly. When I reference the blade gap chart on the Wiki it corresponds to my 40's SS when set to 3.
That having been said, the blade gap certainly isn't the only variable in perceiving aggressiveness, and my blade of choice (Red Pack IP) has a reputation for being fairly smooth/mild. I certainly wouldn't want to crank the Fatboy up to 9 loaded with a Feather
