Thinking of buying a Smith & Wesson M&P 40. I have heard nothing but good things about this pistol. Would love to hear comments from owners of this handgun, both positive and negative opinions.

Thanks.

I do not own a M&P, as I don't care for the gun or caliber, but a few folks I shoot IDPA with speak very highly of them.

I don't have one either but hear good things. I'm interested in your choice of .40 cal. What made you decide on a .40 vs. the other options in caliber?

I personally do not own one but my boss owns one and I have shot the 9mm version. Overall it seem liked a good pistol he's probably put 1500 rounds down range with one misfire, which actually ended up being user error as he didn't fully ram home the magazine when he put it in the pistol. I wasn't a fan of the back strap he has installed but they are interchangable. The only issue he has with the pistol is that it is a full size pistol and he can't carry it IWB he can only carry it OWB. I've spoke to several people about the pistol and have only heard 1 person say that they wish they had bought something else because they didn't feel it was the right pistol for them but they felt it was still a nice pistol. My preference is my Glock 27, but I didn't think the M&P was a bad pistol. I would suggest that if you have a range that rents pistol take the time and shoot a couple different pistol, everyone likes something different and a pistol can be an expensive investment.

Several police friends of mine carry the new M&Ps in 40 and 45. All have been very impressed with them. Very accurate and utterly reliable.

You're right about it being an expensive investment. Mainly when you take into consideration:

Quality holster
Magazine carrier
Gun belt (if you don't have one)
Extra magazines (for training classes and general purpose use)
Improved sights (night sights, big dot, etc.)
Crimson Trace laser (if desired)
500 rounds of ball ammo for reliability confirmation
100 rounds of carry ammo for reliability confirmation

It can become a little crazy.

My .02

.40 cal is a political round. 9MM was deemed too fast and pointy for police work, as it tended to overpenetrate(or so it was claimed). I guess .45 was too old fashioned, so yet ANOTHER new caliber was invented. The ammo I have seen is pricey. Too pricey, especially if you want to gain proficiency with your weapon (which I imagine you do).

I have 3 9MM, a .45, and a .380. I go with the the 1st rule in a gunfight philosophy...Have A Gun. I'm of the opinon that a solid grouping will put any attacker down.

I own one and think its a great gun. I have the standard size which for me is to big for concealed carry but would work fine openly carried. I can't speak to how well the compact version would do as I don't have one.

All in all it's a great gun. Reliable as all get out, accurate, reasonable weight, points naturally with good ergonomics, good price tag, good capacity, interchangeable back straps to tailer the grip to your hand, the list goes on. It's one of the best of its type out there right now IMO.

.40 is a good round IMO but I am thinking of stepping down to 9mm as it is cheaper and with quality bullets effective for self defense. The .40 offers more stopping power but at greater cost to practice and sacrificing a few rounds of capacity.

If I may, as my intent is not to hijack this thread. I have seen 2 seperate post talking about how expensive .40 caliber ammo is, I carry and practice with a glock 27 and per box the price is about $2.00 more per 50 than that of 9mm, as I have to feed a couple 9mm's that I have from time to time. Where do you guys get your ammo and what kind of ammo are you shooting?

As a point of reference, cheaperthandirt.com averages about $4 difference per 50 round box of practice ball ammo. Quality defense loads cost quite a bit more in .40.

Ok, thank you. I buy my practice ammo at Walmart for about $13 per 50, 9mm is about $11 per 50, last time I purchased quality hollow points for my .40 they were about $16 per 50 at the local sporting goods shop, granted these weren't the gold dot or hydrashock rounds. I can imagine that ammo cost has probably gone up since the election as I haven't been to the range in about a month.

I get my ammo from one of three places here in Phoenix. First is Wal-Mart, second is Cabela's and third is Lone Wolf. Cabela's usually has S&B on sale. Lone Wolf will usually have some brands on sale too.

As for the S&W M&P, I had heard that there had been some problems with it early on but that those had been fixed. Most people I've seen have been going for the Springfield XD. The last gun I bought was a Taurus Millenium Pro Pt111 in 9mm. And I've found that to be a very good gun. Go buy the M&P, you'll probably enjoy it.

I own a Fullsize M&P in 9mm. I love this pistol. It has great ergonomics, points naturally, is not too heavy, and has been reliable thus far(~1500 rounds without a problem). The trigger is a little rough at first but it breaks in nicely. If you should ever encounter a problem with the firearm, S&W is know for their good customer service. If I had the funds I would purchase a compact. Buy it, you will probably like it, and if you don't you can sell it at close to what you bought it for. Good luck!

I agree with tbone2. I have the 9mm and have found it to be a great pistol with excellent ergonomics. I found the following podcast involving shooters far more expert than me to be really informative.

+1 on S&W service and support. I called them for a grip pin for a used 4566 I bought, and they are sending me one at no charge. Little things like that kind of support help make S&W a great company to deal with.

Well I have owned a number of hand guns over the years and recently sold my 1911 and my wife now own a Glock 19 9mm and I carry a Glock 30 .45 acp.
Field strip is is very very easy and a very accurate weapon.
I would suggest going to your local range and renting as many weapons as you can and find the one that works best for you.
