I have a troublesome neck, as many people do, and for the many years I was a cartridge razor shaver, I only ever went WTG. I always got decent enough shaves, if not exactly BBS standard, but they were comfortable and nick-free.

Now I've gone DE, I have been trying the usual drill of WTG/XTG/ATG and rarely if ever manage it without drawing blood. However, if I simply do a couple of WTG passes with a good sharp blade I get a shave as good as, if not better, than I used to get with my M3, and am tempted to say "OK, this is as good as it gets for me".

Is anyone else a pure WTG-er?

(As an aside, whenever my [Italian] barber gives me a real straight razor shave he never goes ATG and those shaves leave me BBS and last me two days.)

I wish that was the case for me, WTG was never enough for me, with the M3 or the Fusion 5 blades.

My hair is just growing in all directions, i guess i need to meet that italian of yours :)

I'm WTG - with second pass XTG. Haven't tried ATG. I'm comfortable with XTG, on the second pass. But I see perhaps some days may be exclusively WTG...

I go WTG all the time except for my moustache and chin. Sometimes I'll go ATG, but not usually, XTG always bothers me.

I don't see much reason to start adding ATG into my routine as I'm getting DFS 2 pass WTG shaves. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

I always go ATG on the final pass on my neck and have no problems at all.

Do you make sure you are using next to no pressure on your ATG pass? Be sure and just pass the razor gently over your face or neck.

Everyone is different, of course, but I get a very comfortable shave using whatever direction of pass is needed to accomplish the close shave I'm after.

If you still find that ATG irritates you, I'd suggest you stretch the skin as tight as you can when you make your WTG pass, which is probably what your barber does, and then say "good enough".

Tom

WTG followed by XTG, except from jaw hinge to sideburns, where ATG seems to be okay.

But as a general rule, where ATG goes, pain & misery follow.

I go WTG all the time except for my moustache and chin.

If I go ATG on my moustache, it guarantees ingrowns at the corners of my mouth. Every time. Hell, I'm even nervous of XTG in that area.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Some good tips/feedback.

I shave every which way on my neck with a Merkur open comb and it is rarely BBS. A Merkur slant is waiting for me under the Christmas tree....

I shave north-to-south, then south-to-north. By then my face and chin are BBS, but my neck needs an ear-to-centre pass to become decent and a good deal of blade buffing to become BBS. Normally I don't bother with the blade buffing.

I start WTG and then do two XTG passes (ear to nose and then ear to 10 O'Clock before I even attempt an ATG pass and that only works on my cheeks and neck. I couldn't do my chin or moustache like that.

I don't know about your skin condition. For me it is WTG XTG and in most places ATG. I could skip ATG perhaps and have a decent shave with some stubble.

I hate cartridge razors but same time I say that you propably would get a closer shave with them than with a DE going only WTG.
