I'm wondering if two passes in a row with the grain is useful or not?

If it works for you, then yes.

I only do two passes wtg when I want to endulge. I don't find it necessary but I sometimes do it. It's best to save a second wtg pass when you've skipped shaving a few days and have extra growth.

I find that it is. I can't recall why I did this but I've found that - when pushed for time on a work day - 2 passes WTG and a touch up pass does the business. Now to be more specific I'm not sure that the second WTG pass on the cheeks is of any real benefit but certainly on the jawline, chin and neck I find it helpful to do 2 WTG passes before going XTG.

My beard is very tough, so for me it is. What I do is go very lightly on the first pass and really do not expect to get it all. I often just do only 2 WTG pass with my neck only. The second WTG pass is done when I am doing a XTG on everything above my neck.

Take Care,
Richard

I agree. 2 XTG passes for me are useless. If I want real results it has to be ATG/XTG/ATG. When my neck is feeling extra tender the two XTG passes give me a passable shave with minimal irritation.

I agree with this statement. I don't find two WTG passes useful, especially if I shaved the day prior.

This is a YMMV issue, but as for me, I always do two passes WTG; in fact, that's ALL I do on the neck. But, it should be noted that the second pass on the neck is a buffing pass. Everything else gets an additional 2 passes XTG.

Me and ATG don't get along too well.

It is not useful for me. I would rather go XTG for the second pass. If you are going to do a 2nd pass, you might as well make it count.

It works well for me. I don't see a difference between the XTG and WTG pass. It's easier for me to keep the angle correct WTG.

I'll do two WTG passes if I've got a few days of beard growth, but for the most part it's 1 each of WTG/XTG/ATG and then touch-ups as needed. If I'm just going to class I may just crank the razor up a few clicks in aggressiveness and do a WTG and call it good (the "Monday" shave). This gets me by until I have more time to do a good job.

Honestly, everybody's beard is so different that only you can determine if a second WTG pass works for you. With a straight razor you can really hear if you are cutting any hairs, and it's clear for me personally that a second WTG pass does nothing. I generally go WTG, XTG, ATG, and each time I can hear the razor pinging against stubble. If, instead, I do a second WTG pass, the razor wipes the lather off but I don't hear any pinging. But again, that really means nothing as far as your beard goes...best I can say is, try it and try to feel or hear if anything is being shaved on the second pass. Either you will hear and/or feel the razor picking up additional stubble or you won't...and there's your answer.

For me a 2nd (even 3rd) WTG pass is a great thing. I tend to do five passes lately:

WTG, WTG, ATG, ATG, WTG

The first WTG is never that great for me b/c I haven't usually introduced enough water to my soap yet (I rinse my face between every pass, thus bringing more h20 into the mix with each successive pass).

The second WTG is always a killer pass for me. I get a little creative at times, almost blending it with XTG motions on certain parts of my face

After then doing 2 ATG passes which effectively clear the stubble that WILL remain after going WTG, I clean up with a final WTG b/c it feels good to do it, and more often than not I pick up a small patch of stubble left behind here or there.

Fun this shaving thing is...

2x WTG is a given for me if I have any more than one day's beard growth.

I think 2 WTG passes is a must for folks first starting out. Their technique is still emerging and they miss a lot of areas or don't mow them down low enough to make things comfortable for XTG/ATG passes.
